Tutorial Madness - my thought

MalakhonMalakhon Member UncommonPosts: 224

So I have alt-mania.

This is an established fact.

I enjoy the character design and I enjoy exploring different power set combinations. I just have to accept it.

Last night for instance, I never left power house. I just had a full respec and re-did my powers over and over and with a friend we'd duel all night comparing builds.

It was actually fun.

Here is what isn't;

The Tutorial.

After the dozen times you go through it, it starts to seem VERY irritating. Thats assuming you have patience.

It leads you by the nose down a single street and while some people may need that, especially that first time, after a while its like "Wha??"

I would love to see them open an alternative. Rather than 'skip it', you go to an instanced neighborhood of MC designed for lowbies that is entirely open world if you select to ignore tutorial. You can even visit the power house. When you hit 6th level you gotta move on.

thoughts?

    That's a great idea, considering how fun it is to create alts and experiment.  I think they also need to initiate some sort of (ignorable once you have done it once) tutorial when you reach Millenium City to show you where the bank is, where the Market terminals are, etc.

    That is a great idea. The tutorial does get old very fast.

    The tutorial level is one of the reasons I'm not creating a boatload of alts. I've gone through it with 5 toons, and I just can't bring myself to do it again.

    Current: None
    Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
    Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
    Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

    Just read this in state of the game;

    Tutorial? We Don’t Need No Stinking Tutorial!

    While it sounds simple, there are few things we had to design out to allow players to be able to skip past the tutorial if they’ve already done it once. It’s next up on the list for our content lead, and we’re hoping to have this onto the Public Test Shard as soon as next week.

    I also read the power house will be 'duel free', its ashame they don't just make it so you have to go into another room to do it. Thats all I ask. I don't want to leave power house without testing my pvp build against a real person.

    I wouldn't be surprised if down the line once the game has been out a few months and more pressing issues are addressed that we'll see expansions to the lower levels so we can choose which storyline to do the tutorial through cause I admit I got my alts through the tutorial and I refuse to make anymore chars for now lol

    I have not seen anything to this effect they're working on an area inside the power house were you can test out your powers without doign it rudely ontop of people at the trainers.  My friend and I atleast have the manners to go to one of the unused rooms to duel but alot of assnards do it right ontop of you which is annoying.

    Dev post

    forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php

    "Our intention is to add technology to mark specific areas to cut off from dueling. Like, the area by the power trainers. We haven't tied down the system yet, but that's what we're looking into. Don't worry. (Be happy.)"

    I've created at least 10 different characters (so far) and plan to make more. The tutorial doesn't bother me, though I will enjoy being able to skip it.

    This game is quests-on-rails...they're just the first set of quests on the rails. Wouldn't be much different if you skipped them.

    I agree. I wish it wasn't so linear. I wish it was "You are on patrol in the city..now go and do whatever" and you immediately get to decide how you want to hunt for bad guys. That could accomplish so much of the same thing the tutorial tried to do.

    The tutorial was a response to people complaints in CoH where the CoH tutorial was plain and simple, so community wanted something epic like an alien invasion to be introduction to the game. Hence i believe they incoporated that into this game.

    Depends on HOW you play your characters. You can whip through the tutorial by doing the bare minimum for one. On the other hand, since there are actually folks running it the first time (I'd hope) what about using your knowledge for the common good? Even better, what about RPing a totally clueless Hero and garnering help from others?

    Boring is a subjective term. It's alla matter of what you do with what you've got.

    I agree the tutorial is repetative and mindless after the 3 or 4th time.  However, it is a good place to test out different ideas.  Trying to pick different items that buff aspects of the character outside of the recommended is a good idea at this point.  It allows you to tweak and test without gimping.

    I agree if there was an option to skip and go forward it would be better tho.  I do not get the quest on rails outside in MC tho.  Seems like everywhere I go in that city I am finding different quests and generally more than I can handle.  It is funny how, if those quests were not in there you would hear the OUTCRY for boring and nothing to do.  I LIKE that someone walks up to you and gives you a timed quest.  I HATE that it is 30 miles away when they do!

    All of what people are posting are good criticisms and suggestions.  Please make sure you post these on the forumns!  They are actively looking for more ideas and ways to improve the current game.

    Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
