Speculation roams but I think SOE have seen the saturation of the MMORPG market, realised that WoW has had its day and that there isnt a MMOFPS out there still apart from PS.

This tweet can mean two things;
Either they are going to produce Planetside 2 or they are going to shut it down

People at Smed's level don't Tweet unless it's for marketing purposes. He's building buzz about something, who knows what: PS2, another expansion? We'll see.
Its not shutting PS down, its either an expansion, F2P or PS2.
Yeah these are my thoughts, either release PS2 with substantially more content, lvls, etc
Or make PS free to play, as it is is just a few steps ahead of a good SinglePlayer/MultiPlayer game that only has a one off chrage.
Sony should take a leaf out of Turbine's book that has recently made D&D F2P. They should give something back to the community.
They could re-release it as a stand alone game(ie no subs) and make some money on the sales if they want, bringing a new crop of players(needed to make the game work well) and then run it as F2P.
I hate SOE for neglecting planetside and destroying SWG. But the fact that ANYTHING just recently was mentioned about PS from SOE makes me cringe. It's like everything has led to this moment, and now I am exicted, I don't care what the official news will be, the fact that SOE even mentioned planetside is quite amazing in it's own. I've been wondering if they ever would say something about it.
PlanetSide is like the middle child. No matter how awesome they are, they never get the attention because of the ones that came before and after it stole the attention of the parents. SOE murdered PS for me and I loved that game more than anything. Hell, I was a CR5/BR25 in the Vanu, had my own outfit and was one of the top ranked players (when they were still counting stats...) but BFRs really killed it for me. I couldn't deal with all the little kiddies joining to play with over powered robots.

I am trying really hard not to get my hopes up. But the fact that he said "Planetside next" and "You will like", means he is specifically calling out to the crowd who loved planetside. Which makes me very very very antsy. This is big news even for a tweet. I mean comeon, I've played a million MMO's and my top 3 ever are SWG, Planetside, and classic EQ for being my first.

Man, if they do something to bring some life back to that game, I'll be playing it like no other. So many good times in that game.

MANY SHARE UR LOVE TWIGGY!!!. The fact that smedly even mentioned PS means I expect it to be fairly big. Perhaps rather than PS2, they could always just make a huge graphics overhaul and make it look like a brand new planetside. Do that and then re-release under new graphics with some new trailers and you would have a rejuvinated community.
Who knows, either way, I am keeping close tabs on anything that spews from smedleys mouth from now on. I am betting they finally got to a point where they wanted to try a shot at planetside 2, because honestly IMO.
Planetside was way ahead of its time in the genre, the reason it never really took on was because of the size of the MMO market at the time and the ammount of mmo players who where big in to FPS wasn't really that great. But now with this vastly VASTLY expanded audience, they might see great potential in the evolved market.
If they can learn from there mistakes and go all out on a PS2 I can see it being insanely successfull.
Sadly, F2P is the most likely if you think about it )=. That's great and all, but it doesn't help me seeing as I cannot even run it with my stupid vista setup. Even if I change the compatability.
They better release that game fast before CCP decides to release Dust514 for PC and they suck up every Fps twitch kiddie and all of the remaining populations of Planetside and neocron.

Honestly? I think they should just create PlanetSide2. I could see them going F2P and if they did I would start playing it again, but I would rather see it revisited as another game. PlanetSide is my #1 MMO but it has just been beaten up so much that I think it would be a mercy to put it down and start over. I don't want them to give up on it at all but they really need to start from scratch to give it justice.
I really do love PlanetSide and miss it very much.
New base layouts and perhaps a better 'urban' experience would do. I have mixed feelings about SOE giving us PS2, there is no way, even for PS, that I am going to play a shop based mmo.

One thing pointed out on the Planetside forums is that Smedley only posts big news on his twitter, he has always been a fan of PS (hence why its still going) and its not likely to be a small update etc.
The Twitter is followed by a lot of press for the Gaming industry as well as players.
Its gotta be something interesting otherwise the announcement would have been left to the Planetside CSR Rajinn as usual.
Someone posted back about the BFR's, well there balanced now, very easy for ground troops to take down but hard against vehicles.
Planetside 2 would most likely bring me back to the game (unless they did some ridiculous things to it). I played Planetside a lot originally and it was fun, repetitive though which was really the killer of it. Log on with the rest of your side and take all the territories, log off for the night, other side logs on and takes it all back. You log back in and repeat. So they'd need to improve the dynamics a bit (and the cave aspect could be removed completly just a bad idea all around).
F2P, nah I wouldn't even play planetside 1 for free at this point. There are tons of better looking, better balanced, and more entertaining FPS games that I can play and have fun in, just wouldn't be worth the time.
PS2 but as F2P? I doubt I'd play that, I don't like cash shops to begin with and I really hate cash shops when it comes to FPS games. Nothing like having to keep buying the best weapons in order to be competitive.
There's something going on alright. There's a "You will like" thread on the official forums with three different mods posting "You will like" teases.
I hope it is nothing less than a PlanetSide 2 announcement because the current iteration of the game is beyond saving.
Questions we have had answers too through the backdoor.
Its not a classic server (2003 PS).
Its not fixing issues with game in relation to bugs or gfx issues.
Direct X10 is involved (PS is DX8)
It has much better graphics.
Its big, very big and those that know are extremely excited.
We wondered if PS was getting a DX10 overhaul but we now dont think so.
Its about time someone from the gaming press touched up Smedley.
