ahh dot hack the anime that originally got me into mmos, since the release of .hacl//sign back in 2003 ive always wondered why hasnt anyone ever made a .hack mmo, theres been console games and the manga and novels would be ripe for a ton of content and areas to explore, it also would definitely be an incredibly popular game, what are all your opinions on a .hack mmo and what would you all like to see in one if one ever was made.

Their was one in Japan for the PS2, I can't remember what its called..
I don't recall it being very successful sadly
I'd love to play one though.
Yeah, there was one in production a few years back. not sure what happened to it. vaporware..

Hard to comment, as I felt .hack wasn't a very compelling/interesting anime (and this is coming from someone who enjoys most anime.)
Just doesn't seem like there's a lot to go on. The MMO in the anime didn't seem to have much in the way of distinct traits (apart from using fancypants VR goggles,) and the story itself wasn't as strongly presented as a lot of other fantasy/anime series.
Part of it is my suspicion of turning any novel/TV series/movie into an MMO, because so often the thing which makes these things awesome is story, characters, political intrigue, and the like. In other words, things which are not easily portrayed in games.
Even the series I think has the best potential for a MMORPG (Gundam) would end up missing out on a lot of what makes the series what it is. But at least with Gundam you get extremist, warring factions like Warhammer and Warcraft have.

Have you played the games?
they would have made pretty good mmorpg.
and yeah the anime series was meh.

I loved hack//sign when I was younger. It would actually make a pretty solid game now that I think about it. I would give it a shot. If there is any anime that should be made into an MMO, .hack is it.
i did like some of the characters and story from .hack//sign
i'll admit it's not the greatest anime, but it does tell a unique enough story to remain interesting. An Appleseed mmo might be interesting as well.
Or.. how about..
Urotsukidoji Online. just kidding, thats just wrong.

every 2 or so years i go back and rewatch the .hacks
why this isnt an mmo ihave no idea.
Galaxy Express 999 would be cool as an mmo too. or the original Record of Lodoss War
edit:
also Samurai 7 would be cool

It would be practically impossible to make a MMO that could live up to the immagination that the series gave us. It would be very hard, but you could not make ANYTHING be cookie cutter. Every house you see would half to be a virtual space. You couldn't have those homes that are just textures, or those castle walls that you couldn't go inside of.
They would half to have really cool placed teleporters alot like the series. Like when you ported outside of a city it might be on this really steep cliff with all this lush grassland and lots of content. Take that times 1000 with more land to go to than any other MMO and awsome events, ect. To make a paradise where you could be PK'd, or craft. Collect extremely rare items. The devs would half to have a constant flow of awsome content are rare stuff.
Would be really awsome to have the economy work like in .hack too with districts devoted to market stalls, and people browsing stuff. Like say they had designated lots and areas where people could place a market and it would look just like the ones in the series. And some of the items being sold would actually display in the stall.
Also, in .hack, people didn't run every possible second. When they where in the cities, they actually spent mose of their time walking. Try making a MMO that the vast majorty of the playerbase wants to walk around at a normal pace.
Overally, I don't think ANY MMO developer has the manpower capacity to make "The World" and actually have it live up to the series.
ive also thought that an air gear mmo would be interesting to see with the team battles and the trip to the top of the tropiam it would be ripe for guild wars also air treks pwn someone invent them pls lol
Kaze is thy name, and flying high in the sky is where ill remain with the wind blowing though my wings i shall bring swift justice upon this world
Fuck yes!
though I think lodoss war was based on a scenario in D&D or something, not sure
Check this out, this is VERY close to an air gear mmo. It's called street gears. Even the music is eerily similar in style. Everyone commenting on the vid seems to relate it to either air gear, or jet set radio the xbox game.

you definitely have a good point there the sheer magnitude of a .hack mmo would be through the roof, hmm i wonder if we can do this and change the subject to what you all think would be an incredible mmo be it anime single player game movie etc. keep the conversation going

I remember filling something out about an online game way back when, when I bought one of them. Didn't hear anything after that.

There's never been a true MMORPG for .hack that I'm aware of; I haven't even heard of development for one. What you may be thinking of is .hack//fragment, which was an online game released only in Japan, but that wasn't a true MMORPG. It was unusual in that its online component was designed to run for a limited time (one year), which it did, although the popularity got it extended from November 2006 to January 2007, at which point the online servers were shut down. Bandai has stated that .hack//fragment will not be released outside Japan.
There is also .hack//MOBILE, which is an online game played on cell phones. It's still active, but not available anywhere except Japan.
Because WoW foots the bill where .hack would enter into?
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
If someone releases an mmo where you are actually trying to beat the AI behind the game, which is beyond character levels, items...
A game where treasure hunting is actually trying to figure out bugged mobs and secret doors to graveyard instances,IF
i see the terrain flaking and characters being erased, im f***** game.
Groundbreaking, industry redefining, vision doesnt mix well with mmos atm.
WoW beat the s*** out of the genre with a game which pushed to the limit everything available on the market making something great, rest companies are too old,too scared, too lazy to do something. The current style mmorpg is done for, theres wow out already.
Till someone decides to grow a pair and make something new.
Im in for a game with soul, with a world that you actually give a damn about it.Id hate to see .hack becoming another cookie cutter.
Keep your distance or ill send you back to hell spirit.
i definitely agree with ya there, there is one mmo im looking forward to that may bring that sense of meaning and your actions change your character and the story line along with it is star wars the old republic ive been watching the developer videos on there site it looks very promising and emersive http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/video-documentary-3 heres the video for it, its like adding the mass effect style conversations into a star wars mmo multiplied by 100 of course, i can only imagine the price tag on that project lol

I had a chat not long ago about a dot//hack mmo.
The only real way of getting it near to what the Anime is like is to have a game within a game.
Basicly you play the standard MMO game join guilds make friends kill stuff gain loot.
But then add into that the "Detective" Gene you get clues via your Email/In-Game Mail.
so not only you have normal NPC's that are true to the game but all so NPC-PC's that pretent to be players.
as well as NPC-PC mobs that are hackers, PK'ers, etc, etc...
Active GM's/Working Players that you can interact with to start a Quest chain,
tips, clues, quests and rewards would not be only in game but also on the games site and forums.
all in all you would need a Very dynamic dev team just to get the story line / quests setup what with all the mind games.
it would be a interesting for the RP's out there too, "Why you say?" well the only way you could RP a game like this is to RP yourself.
