LFG (low-fantasy, contemporary, sci-fi)

Background:

Have been familiar with mmo's for quite a few years. Have briefly touched upon some of the older ones like UO, AC and AO, but didn't really get 24/7 raiding hooked until WoW. Basically gave up playing wow after BC was introduced and have since to settle down in a new mmo. I have been scowering this forum for quite some time, but some times find it hard to separate the trolls from the appropriate criticism of the different games.

What I like/don't lke: I like both PvP and PvE, but enjoy PvP the most. I enjoy crafing too, but it's not a major issue. I am not looking for another game with Elfs and Trolls, but I'm ok with low-fantasy. Semi realistic low-fantasy, contemporary or sci-fi are what I would most like to play. I went through CB and OB in Fallen Earth, but even though I liked many aspects of the game I just didn't get hooked. Mainly because of the weird animations and bland graphics (Ye, have to admit it, I want the game to look good too). Not into Super Heroes, so CO is out of the question. EVE has some appeal, but I'd prefer not to only look at my spaceship all the time (not completely writing this one off though).

Upcoming games that I will probably try out are; SW:TOR and TSW, but I'd like an mmo to call "home" until then (and after, if those don't turn out to my pleasing)

Community: Of course I would like the community to be nice and helpful, but as I 'm looking for a game with emphasis on PvP I can live with some gankers and griefers. It doesn't need to be a 500k+ subs game, as long as it's not going to shut down or go f2p in the foreseeable future. (With that in mind is there a website that gives relative accurate numbers on subs for the different mmo's? MMOChart seems not to have been updated since last year, and on this forum trolls seem to want to predict the oncoming death of all and every game).

Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks in advance for any advice

No, nothing? Am I being too demanding? (includes shameless bump)

If you haven't already, I think I'm going to suggest you try out the trial for Star Wars Galaxies... It's what you would consider "dying" but it would never hurt to try the trial.

There's EVE but you're not interested in that, there's Planetside which is also done by Sony, but it's on the verge of death currently (and sadly).

There was an asian game called Neosteam which was steampunk but that's F2P. Another F2P from P2P game is Rising Force Online, or just RF Online.

I think that Aion captures the faction based PvP of RF however and incorporates a game that isn't really a grind, but you may not like Aion for its pretty fantasy-like setting.

These are the suggestions I could think of for you mang.

"IRL is a pretty upstanding MMO with thousands of classes, a lot of PvP and even some pretty unique emotes and titles you can acquire. Explore that world first, then we'll talk about this virtual one."

Thanks for the tip. Star Wars Galaxies is normally a game that I would have checked out anyway, but It's age and the amount of agro it has generated on this site sort of put  me off.

Anyhow, now I'm downloading the trial, and I will give it a go later on tonight or tomorrow.

If you or anybody else have another great mmo they want to share, I'd still like to hear about it.

Have made a toon in each game now (SW and DDO). To be honest I haven't really gotten many yay-moments in DDO yet, but SW feels slightly more entertaining. I don't mean to be ungrateful after the advices I've gotten so far, but I still have a feeling that what I'm looking for is not within these games in a big enough amount to get me hooked.

Just a brutal pvpmmo with good graphics and no elves... (?)

Darkfall, mortal online and global agenda come to mind.

Fallen Earth releases on the 22nd of this month, so you might want to check that out. Being primarily a fantasy mmo player, I didn't really give much thought to the game, but honestly, I'm seriously thinking of giving it a try.

It's set in a post-apocalyptic setting, and the closest comparison I can think of is Fallout 3, only online.

    Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks so far for the inputs.

As of now I'm thinking of either going for Fallen Earth or Age of Conan.

Fallen Earth has a large open world and in depth crafting, not to mention something new in the form of a contemporary/futuristic setting.

What makes me hesitate is the stocky animations and low pvp focus. What seems really nice about the game though, is the community. I played the CB and OB and I felt that it was a mature and helpful group of people playing the game.

Age of Conan is really tempting with it's brutal pvp and beautiful scenery. What makes me hesitate is the alleged low population. It's hard to find any reliable sub numbers and the posters on the aoc forum on mmorpg.com making  the caps-lock threads predicting the doom of the game seem to have some kind of grudge going, and by looking at their posting history they seem like professional trolls. But then again, if a game can make people that bitter, maybe something is rotten in Denmark (Ye, I know it's Norwegian, but Shakespeare, man... Shakespeare)

Also, If I'm going for AoC I probably need to make some upgrades, so I can't just download the trial as it is now.

If anyone having played both this games could share some of their wisdom, I'd be grateful.

I would go with fallen earth, i bought my age of conan copy awhile ago but i think it would be alot better to play the game when they release the expansion.

Well, I ended up buying Age of Conan. The main reasons being  pvp focus, beautiful graphics and collision detection (and ofc not being cartoonish fantasy).

Patching the game atm, so hopefully I'll be playing it later on tonight:)
