I'm glad they realized how much problems it caused and are taking it out for the time being. It shows that NCSoft cares about their game...BUT...they also need something to keep the exploiters away. Especially if this game is going to be as huge as it's ramping up to be. The more subscribers, the bigger 'market' for the exploiters... I just hope they doesn't leave it up to the community to police itself...that never works as intended.
I hear ya, I think that will be the biggest test if they decide not to add GG later.
Off to bed...grats to those who were having issues with GG!! Hope it runs great for you all now with no issues!!
Ive been reading loads of stuff against gameguard here, and while i didnt have any problem with it im very happy NC decided to remove the problem for the time being.
The fact they said it would be temporarily was probably in my POV just a way of not breaking some deal with NProtect and not to "trash" the programs name, i sincerely doubt they will ever again make it into the game. First of all because many players will come to the game that will leave if gameguard comes back, and after seeing this they wont want to loose playerbase.
For all the people who said they wouldnt play because of gameguard here is your chance.
All western games in the market are run without this kind of rootkits, and its not because of this that they are over run by bots.
Aion is launching in 4 days, and it is certainly a great polished game, but aboce all of that, its a game run by a compnay that has been doing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING they can to respect, please their fanbase and solve their issues, while maintaining the course of the game. And damn, if this is not extremely positive then i dont know what is.
GameGuard is really doing nothing for most MMO companies anyway because the people who run bots and hacks can just as easily turn GameGuard off as they can use those bots and hacks. GameGuard is a rootkit and you have to know how to remove it manually so it does help to prevent second hand use of bots and hacks but the real threat to an MMO community doesn't come from DownloadJoe and his hack he pays 2.99 per month for or w/e. It comes from organized RMT companies that simply bypass GameGuard and run whatever software they want.
Beyond GameGuard being a drain on your system (which it really is), and beyond all the technical issues with GameGuard crashes and errors, GameGuard is for all intents and purposes useless. That and GameGuard blocks programs like Xpadder that are designed to compliment gameplay. Virus scanners that should be left on and would have no effect on the game have to be turned off for gameguard, accessibility options that are even built into windows are disabled. Game Guard just doesn't provide anything but a headache for the end user and costs a lot of money for not protecting the MMO any better than a paid QA team can.
I'd rather see companies spending that GameGuard money paying interns less than minimum wage to police their games. At least then they might be able to catch and remove the threats before they do damage. Most of the time games that use GameGuard end up being the most bot infested hack prone games on the market because the publisher or the developer think GameGuard is doing a better job than they could internally.
Good for NCsoft. I hope other companies jump on the wagon and drop these anti cheat solutions like the bloatware garbage they are.
I am extremely pleased to see Gameguard has been removed from Aion. This 'We will however continue to pursue ways to effectively utilize Gameguard within Aion in the future.' snippet gave me a pause for thought, then I concluded that if NCSoft are shown just how bad Gameguard is...perhaps they'll look at an alternative, so make sure to let them know. Threads like this I think are important in that respect.

For a moment I was hopeful, but then I read they will implement GG lateron. No Aion for me, I am sad to say.
Unfortunately GameGuard is a contract service and I'm sure some marketing exec at GG completely raped NCsoft for a huge lease term.
That is one thing they have going for them over at GameGuard. Some of the most rediculously good sales people on the planet. Those people you hear about that can sell water to a drowning man, they all work for GameGuard. I've sat through the sales pitch, they are pretty damn convincing if you've never played any of the games that use GG.

That is a horrifying thought. Of course, if you have a shit system, you have to have good sales to trick people into buying. I just hope NCSoft listens to people and gets rid of it for good.
So far, the vast majority of posts about GameGuard that I have seen are resoundingly negative. That should say something to NCSoft.

"I play Tera for the gameplay"
Even though it is temporary we should be happy, since they are gonna work it out now to be as problemless as it can be

My reaction was the same as yours, minus the sadness.

WTF? No subscription fee?
If a large part of the anti-cheat protection of Aion was relying on GameGuard, and now it's removed... won't that be an invitation for any cheaters?
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
You would think so, but cheaters already know how to bypass gameguard.
