How (and when) to Remove Gameguard

ParkCarsHereParkCarsHere Member Posts: 666

With the recent news of Aion (temporarily) no longer requiring Gameguard (na.aiononline.com/en/news/aion-launch-version-1.html), many of us may want to uninstall it. Hopefully this helps some of you out with this process.

Disclaimer: Most of this information is coming from this thread, so follow at your own risk: www.aionsource.com/forum/aion-discussion/55859-dont-remove-gameguard-yourself.html. I have NOT tried this process yet, but will update when I do and make any necessary changes / comments.

How To Uninstall Gameguard

-Most importantly, don't remove Gameguard yet! Wait until the game has been fully patched to the retail version. There is still at least one more patch to download until head start begins, so wait just a couple more days! This is due to the fact that the NCLauncher STILL requires Gameguard, so you may be unable to download the new patch without Gameguard installed (unknown: just an educated guess).

-AFTER you have fully patched the game (ie: it's Sunday, Sept 20 and you are logged in and playing), follow the steps at www.brighthub.com/video-games/pc/articles/1709.aspx to remove Gameguard.

-After removal of Gameguard, do a full scan with www.ccleaner.com/. (Great tool btw - freed up 1gb of space on my old PC a while back :P).

-Reboot. You're all done!

Please note that removal of Gameguard is entirely optional. If you plan on playing Aion for the forseeable future, you will (most likely) need to have it installed again at a later date. Whether this date is 3 months or 2 years from now, it seems inevitable. Gameguard should not affect your system at all (even if it did before) because the NCLauncher will no longer be updating and running it every time you load up Aion. Your mileage, however, will certainly very.

I will consider buying and playing the game until GG is put back in - then I will drop it.

While I do respect the fact that you will at least consider playing Aion before GameGuard comes back, I will say that GameGuard should NOT be the reason why people skip this game. It has so much to offer for MMO players that you would be doing yourself a disservice by not at least trying it out.

GameGuard does not work as intended. This about sums up GameGuard: "Gameguard: Preventing players from playing. Stopping hackers from nothing."

However, I think we should all be VERY happy to see that NC West has actually listened to our concerns and taken it out, at least for the time being. I don't think we should be worried about future implementation of GameGuard at all. If and when it is implemented again, I think it will be implemented CORRECTLY, meaning that no legit player should have any problems playing, while still maintaining its goal of preventing (or limiting) hacking and cheating. I fully believe that NCSoft will not implement GameGuard until it's ready to go. Think of it this way: They CANNOT just bring GameGuard back in a couple months with no changes. It would be impossible. The uproar from fans and trolls alike would severely impact the game in a negative way.

GameGuard will not be back unless it is fixed to an acceptable level... this is what I will hope until I see otherwise. From a business standpoint, I can't see how they could do it any way.

Devs lies. They lie because it works. It works because players want to believe them. It's like a religion with many. The devs will lie, because telling the truth will lose more subscribers than having some catch them in a lie. That's business.

What I expect, is that after a certain time, they will announce that Game Guard is now safe and effective, and put in back in. We will then find that it is either exactly the same as it was, or harmful in some new way.

I fail to see the lie, even if this scenario becomes a reality.

Don't they state clearly that the GG removal is temporary?

That's one of the things I don't understand too: if Gameguard DOESN'T want to be seen as some type of infectious program that grabs at the very roots of your OS and doesn't let go, why don't they give us an official uninstaller? The fact that I even had to make this post proves that there is something very wrong with the way GG works.

The only reason why I don't mind having gameguard on my system is because it isn't a virus slowing down our PC, and stealing our credit cards, and looking at confidential data and keylogging out  PCs.

However, for performance issues in the game, I at least want to disable it. I probably won't be uninstalling if it isn't required. But, why not just disable it? Why go through all of the trouble removing it, when, in the future, I think they might be implimenting game guard again.

Because nobody bothers to find out how GG actually works. It's "zomg scary rootkit".

Or, their "fix" is turning off all malware protection.

Neither of these really covers it.

I love OP's quote: "Gameguard: Preventing players from playing. Stopping hackers from nothing."

Quite true. Its more of a deterrent than anything else. GameGuard is kind of like those random bag checks at your school after somebody grafittis a wall. Probably won't catch somebody doing something really malicious, but might scare some people away from trying. And irritates the crap out of everybody else because it was never implemented in a good system, it was a knee-jerk response.

Can't say if they will add it again or not. I would guess that from a business perspective they are looking at other anti-cheating software alternatives (possibly US companies), and they will add something else in later, especially if everybody whines about gold farmers.

This is it right here folks. Should be fun to see all the people complaining once they add it again..which they likely will. They even said they are optimizing it and not getting rid of it.

I have and it's really not. You can easily just disable it. Getting rid of it out of the whole PC is another thing but who knows. I want someone to get some proof that it eats up the PC resources and degrades the performance before jumping the gun like most people do.
