only played two MMOs ever, neocron and WoW, i really enjoyed the first but there's so much that could have been done better and the server populations are pretty weak.
WoW i'm currently signed up to but getting bored because of its repetitiveness and completely static world. you kill someone, there's no penalty at all for them, they simply run back to their corpse and reappear in the same spot, same goes for trying to raid towns, it's completely pointless because nothing can be captured and everything just reappears in its place. 100% static world - boring.
i'm after a game where
-the graphics are good
-the objective isn't just to max out (like WoW)
-the world is dynamic (buildings/towns can be created/destroyed/captured), player shops can be run etc
-realtime combat requiring aim, rather than click, go and take a whizz, then come back and loot another corpse
-preferably uses projectile weapons (guns, launchers etc)
-preferably sci fi
-not based on endless levelling up or maxing out to a certain level but rather defining a character for a specific skill set (combat, trades, support etc)
i had a look at darkfall and it sounds almost just what i'm after, but are there any equivalent games in a sci-fi setting?
i guess i'm looking for something with a setting like neocron but finished up much better.

eve-online fulfils all but one of that list...(its got point and click combat)...free trial so i suggest you give it a try
---sig---
PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
eve doesn't appear to be ground based though?
does an on foot game with the features i mentioned exist?
I'll second EVE as a good choice and as myko said theres a free trial so nothing to lose.
There are a myriad of KB customisations in EVE however I think the original poster was referring to the actual methods of combat in some games you listed being more "Hit button and wait for sequence to end" Combat in EVE is far more complicated.
"Solo is, will always be, the main market. A MMORPG that succeed with little or no solo appeal is doing great considering they are ignoring the main player base.'' - Anofalye
Ahhh ok then Face of Mankind I think might be worth a look, when it launches sometime this year...

as long as the level (as opposed to player skill or strategy) of a player/mob doesn't determine too much the outcome of a battle i'd consider it ok. for example in WoW if your character has better stats, you win (a monkey could beat you if he's been playing a week longer).
i'll give eve a go anyway when my WoW expires this month.
had a look at face of mankind and the graphics look very amateurish.
i guess i'll follow darkfall mostly but i'd be amazed if there are no other dynamic realtime pvp MMORPGs in development.
Helbreath. It comes with 5 day free-trial. Based on your prefrences, I believe you will love this game.
-the graphics are good - The graphics aren't top-notch, but it's good enough with lots of character variety.
-the objective isn't just to max out (like WoW) - There are lots of things you can do other than training in Helbreath. (For example, Mining, Fishing, Farming, etc.)
-the world is dynamic (buildings/towns can be created/destroyed/captured), player shops can be run etc - There's an all out war called Crusade that enables users from two opposing towns to raid each other. There's no penalty when you die during Crusades. You can also raid/fight users from other town whenever you want to.
-realtime combat requiring aim, rather than click, go and take a whizz, then come back and loot another corpse - Very complex and intricate PvP system. -preferably uses projectile weapons (guns, launchers etc) - Bows.
-preferably sci fi - Fantasy.
-not based on endless levelling up or maxing out to a certain level but rather defining a character for a specific skill set (combat, trades, support etc) - Lots of skills to choose from.

There's Mourning.
Did anyone mention DAoC?
Did anyone mention DAoC?

You are being sarcastic right?, That game is based upon nothing BUT Endless leveling, Getting Arti's to level, Then leveling your realm rank, To become a elitist
Only mentioned it because it has PvP and you can take over keeps and such. Original poster was complaining about WoW because PvP didn't matter and you couldn't take over anything. *Shrug* I'm not playing DAoC or WoW right now, so what do I know. I was just trying to help...
EDIT: Besides that, every game will be a treadmill if you let it. Whether it has actual levels, or skill points, or golden coins... If you have a measure of progress of any kind, then you have the makings of a treadmill.
has anyone been following atriarch?
-the graphics are good= Lineage 2
-the objective isn't just to max out (like WoW)=Lineage 2
-the world is dynamic (buildings/towns can be created/destroyed/captured)=lineage2, you can capture castle or destroy it.
-player shops can be run=lineage2, but your computer must be on inorder to runa shop.
-preferably uses projectile weapons=lineage2, bows and arrows.
In Lineage2, if you die, there is a chances that your items or armors will be dropped. Your will loss exp too.
pvp is 24/7, anytime , anywhere except inside town.
Which FF Character Are You?
Other than your preference for sci-fi, it would seem to me like Mourning would cover most of your other preferences very well. I would suggest giving it a look.
its good to know that if I ever need attention all I need to do is die
