I just started playing Champions. I made a a dude that shoots fire bolts. I find he's very very underpowered. WHen I fight mobs that are the henchmen, one at a time its nothing. when i have more it gets a little more challenging.
when i fight villains or higher, even one at a time, i almost always die. i see other champions at the same level kill them without any hesitation. whats the problem here? what am i not doing correctly?

What level are you? Fire is mostly an offensive powerset you should be able to take on atleast 2 henchmen and a villian at one time even at low level unless your stacking your stats oddly or not using your abilities correctly. Some of fire's abilities besides the energy builder (which is tnot the ability to rely on for kills just to build up energy) are taps, some are charge / taps, and others are maintains.
Have you tried asking people on the main boards as well? usually people are pretty helpful at helping you figure out how to fix your build before its to expensive to change at higher levels (for now).
My fire user with a few other skills at high level can take on a pretty decent size mob its a bit of a challenge but usually I throw a hold on the villian and blast all the others to a distance if they're melee...range i try to get them to stand close together and rain fire of doom down on their asses.
I also have a toon that is Fire/Force powerset and I do pretty well so far at level 16. The thing that is keeping me upright is a skill called Regeneration. (now I forget what power set it's in) I do know that is uses Regeneration as one of the stats to help boost the heal which meshes nicely with my power set.
im level 8. just a question, because im completely unfamiliar. what do you mean by taps, charge and maintains? how would i know whats what?
i really have no clue how to build and how to upgrade and anything. not even sure where to start

I feel about as powerful as in most mmo's. I can't say I feel especially superhero like at all, except maybe for flight. To me it's just your typical mmo with a cool character creation system that has a superhero skin, which is kind of a disappointment.
I was playing a force power character. I died several times, lost all my stars, can't get any good stat equipment, and now my character is starting to really feel gimped. She dies really easy.
I had the same feeling at first until I realized how important the defensive passive you pick is. My first guy was electric and while he had good damage I did not "waste" any points into a defensive passive. Once I got to the Millennium City missions I would die about every 3-10 minutes.
So I gave up on him and tried Power Armor and went mostly defensive and I must say I enjoy it allot more. Now at level 16 I have died only 1-2 times total and seem to kill stuff just as fast as I did before on my electric build. Oh and I felt almost unkillable in PVP also.
For now the balance of the game seems to lean more towards the defensive side so I would maybe try and build up your defensive powers first then add offensive powers second. This is just what has worked for me and if the retcon costs were not so high I would try more defense on my electric guy to see if it mattered.
And one last thing, BLOCK IS YOUR FRIEND! I did'nt realize how important this skill is until my new Power armor guy either so that was also huge. Hope this helps you.

Yeah, at low levels you should be able to take at least 1 villain + 1 henchman without breaking sweat. My guess would be:
a) You are not blocking. This is the most important thing you can do as far as not dying goes You see the colorful icon going up on the mob's head? That's a special attack and villains will have it. It hits hardish, so when you see that visual cue, press your shift key and hold it until the attack is done.
b) As one above poster said, you are not using a good hitter or maybe misusing it. Check their descriptions as to whether they're just to be just tapped (just hit once to fire), charged (press key to charge for a more effective attack on letting key go) or maintained (keep key pressed to keep attacking).
At your level, slotted passive defense powers, block powers and their advantages will also come into play, but the above are be the basics.
I would visit the official site. There are tutorials, faqs and builds posted there to help new players. Also, its the best place to find people that are playing the game as the forums are locked to players only (customers).

the big issue is players arnt feeling very super compared to any other mmo on the market.
as to OP's issue, block mechanic does wonders.
I'm finding the responses to the OP funny, "Hey go pick a defensive passive!"
Yes, that will make him a Tank and help him solo the encounters. I'm Fire/Might myself with a Defiance defensive passive and Constitution super stated
But the problem here is if you are all Fire powerset, then you should be getting the Fire offensive ability, Fire Form. You should not have to pickup a Defensive passive. To make yourself a little stronger perhaps also get Resurgence (heal power)
Ask me they went overboard when they buffed the mobs wholesale. I'm not sure what they are aiming for. If they wanted us to group more then fine but you also have to make all quests shareable. Right now we have situation all mobs are buffed and everyone is still soloing and trying to get a Defensive passive to get by the mobs.
They broke the PVE side of this game in a big way
Block + regeneration is godly. That's why I use on my Electric
Taps= clicking the button one time, for a fast attack
Charge= holding the button down till it charges to max then releasing
Maintain= holding the button down for the duration of the spell or until your out of power, mana, ect.
Ive played champions for awhile and one thing that I always did was to start with a custom build. I had a fire guy but couldnt stand his power builder. So instead I went ego for my power builder then took fire blast. I like it alot more and seem to be able to gather power very quickly from it. You wont be able to get to the higher fires as fast as possible but, with picking outside fire for a bit will eventually get you there and give you some great help with fighting multiples
I would also recommend
Regen - from supernatural
Force eruption - the skill from force that pushes ppl away that are to close to you. Its a great crowd control and if you get to many baddies on you just pop that and they will go flying away from you

A Fireball tap with the fire debuff advantage followed by a tap of Flashfire and then full charge of Conflagration is probably the highest sustained DPS AOE damage possible in the game. Its just sick and can even put a fully supported Electrical Gigabolt to shame.
Fire energy builder is one of best ranged energy builders in the game. Second only to Electric according to the various spreadsheets players have come up with that datamines efficiency of energy builders. Cryptic tends to value things more then actual players so there are some imbalances
It tells you what skills are what in their description. Pyre for instance can be used as a tap or a charge..to charge you hold the button down to charge up the skill either to max or some maintainable point before you need to fire. Full charge gives you full chance of damage etc. Conflagration is a maintain. You have to hold the button down until you have no other choice but to move or run out of energy in order to use the skill. Fireball is a charge / tap. There's another one thats like Fireball but its merely a tap you tap the button over and over to continously fire it.
At level 8 you should be kicking things asses unless your making really bad bad pulls.
if you want to really mess crap up and your super stats are Rec / Pres or atleast Pres take Fireform...it all depends on what your going for you ca n either build the power build of the day using stuff like Regen etc (which is usually what PVPers do) or build for concept...and if you build for concept its best to figure out what your weaknesses are so you can better evaluate the move your going to make.
Fire is a slow starting framework. You tend to have low defense and initially you start without any really good AE abilities. To start in fire you need to be good at blocking and hit that often and heavy. Build you power while blocking and be selective on our targetting. I tend to take out all the henchmen first as they go down the fastest. Then I focus on the villian. The key to beating villians is REALLY watch their animations and block!! Doing this you can survive an amazing amount of time. Also get some healing patches that can come in handly.
Later as you level up with fire you get some great AE abilities that will make henchmen a non issue.
With fire you really want to go offensive. You will never be a tank. Get the offensive power and really try to burn shit up before it can really hurt you
That said I'm playing with a build that mixes fire and might. I'm not sure it will work but it will be interesting.
