Request for Artistic Help: Body Proportions

TisiphoneTisiphone Member Posts: 486

Let me begin with: I love character customization.

However, although I am good at duplicating facial features, body shape is much more difficult for me (and it is not something I normally have so much control over).

I cannot be the only one having difficulty proportioning my character's head realistically to her body, as well as her hands, arm length, and feet.

Of course there is variation in nature, but even with Sears catalog pages open (or a mirror) whilst I am making my toons, I'm still having trouble.

For instance, when making a female character with any "realistic" pre-made body shape, the head size slider is quite far left, and pushing it to the middle looks cartoonish. The head size slider and body size slider do not seem to be 1:1 adjustments.

I want my character to be a bit taller or shorter than the norm. Does anybody have any good rules of thumb for head/hand/arm/feet proportions? I see an odd and varying assortment of guidelines on Google searches.

This took me a while. But I think it looks good. I have found that the middle dot on the head is way too big. So I put that one to the left.. While leg length usually goes to the right in making it look realistic. I always put the neck length down too. Thats just me though. Hope this pic helps...

The maxed out chest is not a necessity... =)

Hmm... I'm close to those sliders too. The only problem I run into is when I raise the top (body size) slider, I don't know how far to move the head size slider.

    Thanks for the screenie!

Yeah I have head size problems too, sometimes it just looks funky. I just mess with it until it looks normal. But its always to the left of the middle dot...

scroll in and out with the mouse wheel, turn your char sideways and scroll in again.  That should give you a better feel for the head / body size.

The head size they give you is the proportionally correct for people in the midrange to upper and lower midranges in height. If you choose to make him extremely tall or small, also depending on the body type you choose to make him, you will want to slightly increase/decrease the size of the head depending on the size you choose. Arms should always reach to mid-thigh, because when straightened out with shoulders they should equal the same height as your body from hand to hand. The legs are pretty much going to be a decent size no matter what height you pick, because leg and torso length varies for alot of people. You may want to pick one of the default body types they give you just to be safe. I hope this helps, if you have anymore questions I'll answer them for you. :)

I found that head size is always too small, at least to my liking. I increase the size until it doesn't look good, as you say cartoonish, and then go a bit to the left until it looks right and leave that there.

Don't forget about the hands & feet, you need to scale those to match your noggen.

  • Yeah, you gotta push head size quite some to the left, while leg size should be more to the right to make it look decent in my opinion.

Most other options are best around the middle, but of course, each to his own. I tried to make a cute girl (after I remade cloud from ff7, heh) so I didn't want her to look funny or ridiculous with a tiny body and size all the way to the bottom.. still can't believe just HOW small they let you be.

Its funny, I actually pushed leg length the other way because to me the female leg length looked kind of barbie proportions.

From what I see in reality, people's top half is about the same length as their bottom half...?

Pick the small (or tiny) body size, push all of the sliders to the left except the head size and call it a day.

You'll thank me later one day.

For feet I'd go a little larger than what looks good in the creater.

In beta I went with average sized feet in the creater and in game they looked tiny.

Did the proportions I gave you work for you okay?

Haha, kay. :) I hope they help ya alright. If you got any questions beyond that, I know the proportions of the human body like the back of my hand.

  • stayontargetstayontarget Member RarePosts: 6,519

When you click the body button on the left, below the face button.  Did anyone check out the pre-made bodies ?

I looked at the list and saw "curvy body" listed and it was not what I was expecting for a female toon

Even though I have made my 2 char's, I'm still messing around with the CC......so much win went into it.

judging by your avatar I would say this is false.     J/K

Yah, the pre-made bodies are decently proportioned if you don't alter height and everything. Curvy body makes me laugh. :) I've been messing with the CC because I am too anxious to play the game, this is the only way I know how to sate my anxiety, just a little bit anyways. :P

Hahaha, nah, I just think the avatar is funny. :)
