How Many Players Per Server?

dreldrel Member Posts: 918

Does anyone know how many players each server is allowing?  How many players each faction is allowed per server?

    OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!

But seriously, not a clue. I'm just going to make due with the answer "a lot" and go with it.

Only 8 thats all your allowed to make..  so if you make all 8 on one server that be all you can make..

There are currently 12 servers for the US and 12 for the Europe. With 300,000 pre-orders that would put 12,500 users per server on average assuming that sales from the US and Europe are balanced. Considering that there will be a fair amount of interest by others in the game at the start 15,000 users per server would not be an unreasonable starting amount.

Based on other games they would start to roll out additional servers once the populations exceeded 20,000 but that of course will depend on the hardware they are using and the performance they and the users are experiencing.

It has to be a pretty large amount. You figure 400k preorders, let's say..150k bothered with the preselection thing. Doing quick math I'd say around 12-13k roughly if not more. This is just assuming only 150k bothered with it. It might be less, might be more. I don't think any servers are currently "capped" though. They are just slowly upping it so other servers don't get abandoned. It's pretty smart really.

Can a server handle anywhere from 8k-20K players at one time? Would that affect your connection with that many players?  I just remember in DAoC we could easily crash the server when we got into large battles with lots of players. Hopefully technology for servers has advanced since DAoC.

its alot more then most games because of the 10 channels in the starting zones with that system they could probably push 100k per server 10k per channel

Yeah, but that's only within the first 20 levels. Then what happens when all 100k of them flood into a channel?

Well, our budget for the NA launch was a bit limited.  Luckily, there were a ton of "slightly used" servers available for sale on the cheap from Warhammer online (does that alleviate your concerns about it being like DAoC?).  They aren't the tops, but they'll have to do.  Once we figured out how to install WINE on them to get them to run our windows based servers they seemed to rarely crash more than once or twice a day.  Keep your fingers crossed that it will still be like that when users start loggin in!

    - Your friendly Aion developer whose job it is to read the mmorpg.com forums 18 hours before launch to answer technical questions.

Edit:  With the influx of cash from the 400k preorders (thanks you guys!) we were able to get the "Powerboost" feature from our wonderful ISP, Comcast (maybe you've heard of them).  So based on our initial tests where both Larry and I were able to play lag free, we think the Servers should be able to handle dozens of players at the same time with no issues.

well highly unlikely there will be more then 10-15k people on at a time so probably no need to worry. If its more i'm sure they can move channels to different zones as long as they dont have to create channels for the main cities i'm happy.

Oh phew! I'm glad an Aion developer could find time to dedicate himself to the mmorpg forums 18 hours before launch to answer extremely important technical questions!

Wow, my life would have ended if it weren't for your logical and failproof data!

I suppose, I doubt the game server could withstand 100k people, if I had to guesstimate I'd say it'd be somewhere between 20-30k people, which is still plenty.

I mean, as long as there are enough people there for you to group with people and stab/throw fireballs at your enemies then who cares? :P

LOL, all I can envision now is 3-4k per faction in the lowbie area's come game time tomorrow.  Was anyone on a launch for the 'Corruption' Shadowbane server? Now that was MADNESS! (Lowbie areas were packed and to top it off the Devs decided to run a server event for a couple hours.. Good Times!)

Wow, seriously, I did not do that mental math.

But, during OB/CB, it was never that bad...

They have different chat channels - I never paid attention but do they do some sort of area instancing?

I just hope they stick to their guns and don't open too many servers for the initial surge.  Warhammer anyone?

I'll put up with a week of overcrowded areas and server snafu's to keep things from thinning out.

Not to forget the around 50,000 CE hard copies that are or are almost sold out. + an unidentified number of standard edition hard copy pre-orders. Overall pre-orders could be WAAAAY higher than 400k. With the 50k hard copies that puts the overall around 450k almost guarenteed. If you add the unidentified standard editions hard copies, that could put us anywhere from 500-700k preorders for a ballpark estimate. "possibly more"

For CB/OB they had like 2-3 different channels, but this only extends from the noob area and the 10-20 area. No further. For launch however, the developers said they will be launching with10 channels on every noob zone because it WILL be packed.

Every normal channel holds more players than you want anyways, so even with all the channels, it will be packed. This is why I laugh at all the immersion freaks who say this ruins their experience becaus supposidly they won't be able to "See everybody"

If by seeing "everybody" they mean living breathing terrain, then immersion isn't what it used to be.

For an idea of why they use channels. Here is an amazing example. Don't get the wrong idea, this is how you train for battle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inA-36YRV0Y&feature=PlayList&p=87BB88F0028802A2&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=38

I don't think that can happen. Aren't areas like the Abyss limited to the number of players in it? When you die in there, don't you get knocked out of it, allowing another player access?

  • bazakbazak Member UncommonPosts: 283

no the abyss has no limit on people in it its as big as if not bigger than either of the mainlands

Thanks, I suddenly have that vision on youtube of the japanese wave pool that was posted by Denshing with the wave pool representing the abyss. The abyss is going to be insane with so many people being able to access it then!!

There servers cannot handle 30k people let alone 100k even with channels in pre 20 zones.  (no zone that has rifts has channels)  so its not really pre 20 because the PVE lv 20  + zone that is off on an island has  channels you can get to 30 here.

I would say they are pushing the limit if they want 15k-20k per server and i expect them to add servers as needed.

I see this morning on the official Anion site, Ziekel(east coast) is still temporarily locked. Wonder if too many people signed up for that server?
