Customization

Something that's always bothered me in this genre is how cities all tend to look the same.  The layout may vary a bit, but players always end up using the same buildings.  Same looking, same functioning.  Ultimately, the goal always seems to involve a well rounded city that makes use of just about everything.  Thus, being extremely similar, no matter how its played.

Now, as an MMO, it seems like it'd be even more of an issue.  Not only will any city I create look the same as any other, but it'd look the same as anyone else's city.  Course, lots of MMOs lack customization, and not everyone cares, but it is something that's important to me.

I'm just wondering if this game makes any effort to let players customize buildings, the way some MMOs give players the tools to customize equipment and such.  Color choices, texture varieties, maybe even controls to adjust building height, or style choices that effect an entire city, rather than the sort of City Life neighborhood styles, where players end up using all of them at once?

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

unfortunately, no.  AT RELEASE (I emphasize that) there are no customization features implemented.  with that said, Monte Cristo does want to add customization but they don't know how to do that with an MMO.  with previous city builder games customizatin was not a big deal because all games were single player so I could make a buch of cheat lots and make a huge no pollution, million dollar a year income city with no effect on your gamming experience.

but with an MMO city builder any custom building that I make you have to deal with in your experience.  If I make a cheat lot which gives my city more resources then how can your city compete with mine for trade relations?

in order for cities xl to be a fair and balanced MMO they have to figure out a way to allow customization without affecting the balance of the game.  if you have suggestions on how to do this then post them on the official site.  the Monte Cristo team does listen to the fans (althoguh right now they are a little busy with beta and release).  because this is an MMO they fully intend to update and patch this game for as long as the players give it life.

Said which part, exactly?  I know customizing gameplay variables of building too much would be a balance issue, so I'd just suggest a few balanced options to choose from.  Maybe even city-wide, just to mix things up a little.  but I was mostly referring to visual options.  The ability to make buildings taller or shorter, by using sectioned models, where the middle section includes cloning 1-25 floors, or something like that.  Then the option to adjust color a bit, maybe some choice of textures, like polished vs urban decay.  That sort of thing.

I don't feel like registering on the official forums, just to post this.

And you don't have to, Vhaln...your voice is being heard right here... ;-)

What I meant was that soldyne did sum up the situation pretty accurately: we want and are going to support the creation of custom content as much as we can but at the same time since this is an MMO we can't afford to have custom content that will modify the balance of the game...

Our idea is to give custom content producers what they need from us (among what we CAN give obviously) to create great new elements that match the graphic quality and overall level of polish that the game possesses...This is a topic we would like to see move on soon so you can expect some more details in the coming weeks...
