New Engine?

dyermaker714dyermaker714 Member UncommonPosts: 192

Played WoW for awhile back in the day, loved it, thinking of getting back into it when Cataclysm comes out.

I've heard some ppl say that there is a new graphical engine being emplimented? I kno they are going to update the water shader..renderer..whatever its called and obviously anything new they add will be SOMEWHAT prettier maybe with some new textures but are they generally revamping the graphics engine? IE is everything going to be updated/prettier or just the water/new areas and monsters? World of Warcraft is a great game and some updated graphics would do it some good

Nope. The graphics engine is also the game engine from which WoW is built from. It would cost so much money and take so much work that it would take much longer than a year to implement that, they might as well work on a WoW2 instead.

I'm just gonna take a shot in the dark and say that they'll do some detail touch-ups on everything, but you won't see any enormous changes like that of an engine change. Just don't hope for it because chances are it's not going to happen.

Thats really what I meant. Seeing as how every new race or any kind of visible addition looks a little cleaner and prettier than any original models it would be nice if they touched up the old ones. It just seems kinda lame that blood elves are prettier than night elves (from a graphical standpoint) because they are new. The new cities are also just nicer, the textures, everything. It would be cool if everything was just brought up to the same level. not any kind of major overhaul or anything just nice touch ups so that when i roll a Forsaken my toon and environment doesnt look like shit compared to a worgens character/environmental models. I think WoW is just genious in general, shit if or when WoW 2 comes out, count me in no questions asked

They have not rebuilt the engine from scratch but they have added real time dynamic shadows, will be adding proper water effects in Cataclysm, the draw distance has been massivly increased, hi-res textures on new gear and increased poly counts.

The difference between vanilla wow and wotlk is very noticable.

Here some of my screen from wotlk.

Just the new content? Aside from the shadows and new water both of which are very much welcome.

They are certainly updating all of vanillia wow to wotlk levels, and yes that comes with updated poly counts, if that sort of thing floats ya boat :p

They wouldnt add in a revamped engine because one of the reasons why WoW has so many players is because pretty much anyone with a computer can play it. Not to mention how difficult it would be to "rebuild" from the ground up.

Think again, Blizzard has updated and revamped their engine on several occassion. Alpha WOW versus Beta Verus Vanilla, Versus Today... All had improvements. Forget about a new engine though.
