They probably will after a couple months.

Yeah I love the game, I just don’t like uncompleted reviews that can keep people away from the game because it gives a false impression

To be honest I don't think it's a bad review and is quite spot on in many places.

The thing is, there ARE Kill x quests and many of them.. Now, what some people seem to forget is that there is a difference between the korean grind games like L2 where you just go out to a field and start grinding (solo or in group) and the whole Kill x type of quest game.

LOTRO had so many "Kill X" quests it isn't funny. WoW has them too. This part is not particularly korean.

    Heck AoC has them also.

But in the end you are doing quite a few" kill X" quests. So if you are a player who is just fed up with these or need something different then Aioin wouldn't be for you.

If you are a player who is generally accepting of these quests or just doesn't mind them then Aion could be for you. So in that way it really does boil down to personal preference. Which really is what constitutes most reviews.

I just think it's very fnny to see people screaming "it's like L2, it's like a korean grind game" and at the same time other people are crying "it's just like WoW".

    So really, which is it?

good review, i like Eurogamer.. at least they dont throw around with 9s and 10s like IGN. (other then that IGN is still a very reliable and professional site)

i visit Eurogamer for its reviews, IGN for the rest (news, previews, features, etc)

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

Yes but that’s not a point, a review can’t be rushed...especially for any mmorpg

I disagree. Specifically for an mmo, if the game doesn't suck you in and hold your attention in the very early levels, then it's an utter fail. Saying that I have to pay based on time (i.e. monthly sub fee) and that I need to continue to pay and play to figure out if the game is fun is just plain nonsense. If you have to get to a certain point of a game for it to be fun, then I shouldn't have to pay until I get to that point.

I like what I'm reading - theres FAR to much 'end game' nonsense flying around in this forum

And to the people who say you cant review a game because of the time played.. well just look at the reviews in magazines.. you think these reviewers have played every minute of a game? No.

I thought it was a very good review.

He explained what he reviewed, why he reviewed it, and that there would be follow up reviews once the community forms.

I'm honestly having a hard time seeing what the fuss is about.

I think people don't like the "7/10" score.

It's way too subjective. I mean, how quantifiably different is a 7 over an 8 over a 6.

I always think these things should be more narrow. In which case I read the review as being 4/5.

    Which feels about right.

So,  Judging by Eurogamer's scoring guide, the "score" is more or less arbitrarily chosen based on the author's personal belief. And people are more drawn to a nigh meaningless number than the content of a review?

A similar argument could be applied to how you feel about the review: I think that 7/10 is about on par given that he has only played the first 20 levels, which are by no means exceptional;  putting it bluntly, many games outdo the first 20 levels or so of Aion, since they are pretty generic and offer nothing new (i.e. flying is trivialized, no PvP etc.).

It's sort of like Age of Conan where the first 18 levels (or however long you planned to stay in Tortage) were among the best of any game, yet the rest of the game was ridiculously lacking in content and design.... at least that's what I'm hoping for and why I'm playing it.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

He might very well be, but I was not and he responded to that, which made me laugh as did the review.

Heh, well up until a few days ago there was only a few hundred posts under this title. There wasn't a huge "wow killer" picture being painted on this game.

So yeah, please tell me where you saw the super hype generated by NCsoft ? As I said before you either going to like Aion or hate it period. I like it so far and I'll respond to the Eurogamer review to keep the thread on topic. I disagree with the Eurogamer review...he is reviewing the game in Beta for pete sakes.

I too don't understand what the fuss is about, and find the general gist of this thread faintly embarrassing as a community.  One comment though - remember that scores have to be takenin context.  Let's look at some other MMO scores on EG e.g. WOW gets at 8, WAR (re-reviewed though after a while) gets a 7.  7 seems a pretty good score relatively to me (and I've got to mention the score for DF - 2).  And it also shows for example that the site will re-review the game after some time once the game is more established, when typically the score moves up 1 or 2 points (or in some cases down).

Well, some people did not like the review and used arguable arguments to justify their opinion, so the result is an argument about it. Apart from some uncalled for personal attacks it is quite ok for people to voice their opinions on these forums, I think.

Well, I didn't disagree with the scoring or the way he described his experience through the game. My only gripe was with the way he described combat. I suppose I would expect from a reviewer to understand the meaning of optimising skill circles and cooldowns. Apart from that, no disagreement really.

He mocked the combat and the game for not being original. So I can understand that people did't like that. The way he mocked the combat was so totally unoriginal that I suspect he was not totally serious though.

I'm not even sure why their review matters at ALL.  People will make up their own minds about the game and either tell their friends to avoid it or play it.

Warhammer still has a 8.23 score on this site, for instance, and everybody knows that the game is a tragic failure, so I'm completely over 'professional' reviews.

im starting to think Tasos had a point when he went mad at Eurogamer

    I agree, Eurogamer is crap.

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

I honestly don't understand why some of the above posters are annoyed that Eurogamer reviewed a beta. Especially when the reviewer states in his review that he was reviewing the beta.

If you also think carefully about it, the US  & EU beta's goals were to stress test servers and finalise language translations to the game, opposed to making any huge gameplay changes. The game has been finished and out for 10 months now.

I am against reviewing betas, however,  Aion is the exception (to date),  for all intents and purposes the game has been finished since it first released in the East. The 'oh but it was beta' crap is not applicable in this instance.

As to the controls/combat I think the reviewer nailed it on the head, they are very similar to every other MMO and well quite frankly I'm getting bored of them so why shouldn't he? Repeatedly using the same skill rotation is BORING and I like the fact that he states this.

The review also clearly states that it is pre-Abyss, which is not necessarily a bad thing as that is going to be the testing ground for most gamers, its usually in the first 20 or so levels of a game a player makes up his mind whether he will continue his sub or curse the developer on the forums for cheating him of his money, no?

tl;dr: Stop whining that Aion only scored 7/10 - it's a nice well polished game, it just has no OMFG  factor.

meh 6 or 7 seems about right to me.  But they really should have waiting till they had gotten to 50ish post release, and see the PvPvE.  That's the entire freaking point of the game, and he acts like once people get there, they will still be in the starter zone killing low level mobs that just melee and do nothing special....

He states clearly that he is only reviewing the first 25 levels. Mostly because there was not enough abyss activity to make a fair judgement. Eurogamer also wanted to get a review out when people are interested in finding information about the game not six months later. If the author had not been so clear on what he was discussing, I could see what the fuss is about.

Who gives a shit what any critic has to say, iv'e learn't the only way to review a game is to play it first hand.

Well from my experience in closed beta, my sentiments are exactly the same as the reviewers. In fact, I think this is a very spot on review, rushed or not.

Remember guys, a review is a review, this is the opinion of the critic/writer in question, not the official stance of Eurogamer. If you disagree, go ahead, it does not make the review bad.

Like there is such a thing as a "professional" reviewer. Well, I guess there is. However those are required to make up stories and give all games a 9/10.

Noob review....You can't review a MMO this close after the release.
