Best hardcore MMO currently on the market?

It seems to have been ages since I last played an MMO for more than a month or so without getting bored. The last two MMOs that I played for an extended period of time were EverQuest and Vanguard (which goes to show just how long I played EverQuest for).
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for current MMOs that may take my fancy? I've played EVE Online a bit and actually think that I might give that game another shot as well but I was looking for further suggestions really. So does anyone have any ideas?

The rock you've been hiding under is MASSIVE.
The biggest mmo at the moment is World Of Warcraft, not saying it's the best though, infact many people hate it for reasons I simply can't be bothered to state.

Thanks, but I've played it got bored and have tried just about every other MMO that has been released since.

Darkfall is the best hardcore MMORPG on the market.
Eve is semi-hardcore (strong carebear elements that we all know about - Empire Space - )

Join a Perma-death guild in DDO... That is hardcore
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Age of Conan PVP server it's really harcore to do quests alone ;p when all want to gank you

Being Hardcore is such a cliched over used term which means different things to different people and is all about making E-peen statement on forums....People in WoW think their Hardcore, people in Darkfall say they are, its all very playground isnt it.
Find a game with PvP if its to easy or boring for you try another one till success, other people telling you whats hardcore, or dictating what is, (look above) will never work because they dont know you and what you think hardcore enjoyment is, and please can we change the word Hardcore, I keep thinking of different internet entertainment. Oh hang on theyre the same, both have slutty people craving for attention.

EVE Online no contest. All other games not even close
Eve Online is probably the most hardcore on the market. Darkfall is harcore in the same way that three guys in leather jackets standing outside a 7/11 talking about how badass they are is hardcore.

Darkfall Online
Nothing is more hardcore. Full loot, city sieges, clan warfare, crafter farming. Its got it all.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Thanks guys. I may have to have another look at Darkfall Online. I had concerns about the population in that game but I am prepared to overlook that if the game mechanics are worthwhile.
I was already planning on resubscribing to EVE Online when I get back from travelling. I enjoyed that game before I left.
People seem to link pvp with hardcore here?
Just because a game has no rule set pvp, does that mean hardcore?
I think being an EQ1 player the OP means play style in PVE.
EvE for pvp and FFXI for pve.

At the moment EVE is probably one of the most "hardcore" MMO's out there, at least until Hello Kitty Online comes out.

Eve is only hardcore if you choose to make it hardcore, since you can follow FAQs to easily train your skills in the most optimized way with little to no thought, hang out in areas and never die, never be attacked by anything that can actually kill you and never be in any danger what so ever. You can actually never get in a fight at all and be quite succesful crafting and playing the market, ect. Since you CAN play Eve in a completely casual way, then its not actually harcore is it? Might as well call WOW hardcore when mentioning Eve, since you can play it completely casually with little risk. OR, you can be the first guys beating the hardest dungeons before anyone writes an FAQ which as everyone knows is not easy in any sense of the word...certainly as hardcore as it gets PvE wise. You can be the highest ranks in the arenas which is NOT easy at all, also as hardcore as it gets, PvP wise. So WOW can in fact be just as hardcore as Eve CAN be. CAN is the special word here. WOW CAN be hardcore and it CAN be as casual as you want. Choice is good.
Darkfall takes the cake. There is no safety. There is no easy way to play. Its a PITA in every sense of the word. There is no casual option. DF is hardcore through and through=)
Shame Df is crap though.
If you're going to consider Darkfall, then take my advise and wait for the next expansion first. I play it and like it somewhat, but I'm not disillusional: It's extremely flawed and needs more updates. The expansion is scheduled for October.
DF and EVE are your two best choices atm, MO online in the future assuming they succeed in launching.
As mentioned, EVE gives you the chioce of playing it hardcore or casually, whereas DF there is no chioce, you will be thrown into the bloodbath on the first day.
As for calling WOW hardcore? No. Some people think if you play a game a large amount of hours, or tackle its toughest content it makes them hardcore. (which since there's no official definintion, perhaps they are).
To me, only games that offer a true risk vs reward system, including death penalties with enough consequences that avoiding dying is more important than killing the other guy will ever be in the hardcore category.

Darkfall believes to be hardcore for the simple fact that you can attack and kill anyone, anywhere. However, losing a sword is not really a big deal and losing 3000 arrows hurts but it’s not a big deal. It doesn’t compare to losing a full fledge Navy Megathron equip with tech 2 rigs, faction fits and such… And for most really advance players, that’s nothing.
Darkfall is great but it’s nothing that special as well. It’s hardcore but being an EVE player since beta, Darkfall is the equivalence of flying a battleship alone in 0.0… it’s dangerous and you’ll probably die but in the end who cares, a battleship is just a tech 1 ship.
If you want to play EVE, join a strong alliance and be part of the world. Don’t wander in Empire space, you’ll just waste your time. Make your muscles in Empire… do some missions, learn to play but when it’s time to really discover EVE, join a 0.0 mega corp.
I'm not actually saying that Darkfall is bad, it's actually a great game but it's nothing near EVE. The scale is completely different. One is a simulation while the other one is a Fantasy that simply decided to allow ganking. Sure EVE has Empire space to keep pirates at bay but trust me, You'll die in Empire space... Empire has a lot of drawbacks such as laws. It's not the best place to live but it's safer until you can be on pare with other players.
