I want this game... but do I?

almerelalmerel Member UncommonPosts: 658

Ok so I have been following this game since concept art and the very first trailer (2 yrs or so I think). However, I did not have a wife or a baby (8 months old) at that time.

Is this a game that I can log into a half hour at a time or do I need 2 hrs a session just to make the $15 a month worth it?

I have to play in small spurts as well, and so far I've had a blast playing Aion.  The world is beautiful, the combat is fast and fun, you'll find yourself wishing you had more time to play, not because you're just getting into it 30 minutes after starting, but because you've been engaged the entire time and you can't believe it's already been a 1/2 hour.

Eh I think early on you will be ok, but later if you don't craft or do any side things short bursts you might find get you hardly anywhere.

It's a lot of fun. And I'm only typing this because I sadly left to go check something at work and got back to a Q. Small but :(

Its cool though. Things will even out more soon by the end of the month I believe.

Overall you should find yourself having a lot of fun.

I don't know any MMO really where you can't atleast commit a couple hours per play session. If you can't I'd say MMO isn't really your genre.

That's why I'm asking lol. I love the genre but I have a hard time justifying the fee at times. That's why I like GW's and DDO now that it's f2p. I'm to far in either of those games now that a half hour doesn't do it for me anymore. I know the older my son gets the easier it'll be to get a hour or 2 in. Especially since I'll either be on my seasonal lay off or be in a new job that I'll have 3 days off a week. I basically need to figure out if I should jump in now at the beginning (which I prefer) or wait a couple months.

Also for those that haven't bought the game and want a good deal go to gogamer.com, they have the game with a 60 day game card for about $62.

Last night I took my 300 iron and wen to make iron bars.  How does 30 minutes of watching a blue bar race a red bar sound?  If that sounds like fun then this game is for you.  The PVE is a little different.  It's just as boring as the crafting, but you have to press buttons (at least until you get your bot setup)... so unlike the crafting, you can't get as much reading done.

You don't need a party quite as desperately as WoW or FFXI, but it helps. Its somewhere in the middle. There are a lot of solo quests.

I don't get it. Why are you watching those bars. ALT-tab go read something come back 20 minutes later, all done.

    There you go.

I think the implication from my post is that I DO get a lot of reading done while I'm crafting.  However, I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

In the context of the OP's question I was just trying to give an example of how this game isn't really setup (as many mmo's aren't) for getting to do much fun stuff if your play time is 30 minute stretches.

In a thread hijacking context about Aion crafting, I'm not sure how to feel about it.  Maybe Aion developers tried and decided "fudge it, it's impossible to make crafting fun, let's at least make it so they can go do other things."  (Sure they could just do some calculations or something and instantly turn those 100 iron ores into 98 iron bars or whatever, but instead they make the player sit there and watch while this little blue bar struggles across the screen 100 times)

So when I'm sitting on the couch watching Family Guy reruns and someone asks, "hey I though you were going to play Aion?" it just seems weird that I can honestly reply "I am."

There's a difference between this length of time crafting and another game's? Crafting is longest and most dull setup I've seen in most games. The only game I've somewhat enjoyed crafting in was Vanguard, because you actually did things and affected the outcome based on how you did them.

In WoW I could farm tons of mats, start smelting, go work out on my weight bench, then come back to find my character just finishing. That was about 30 mins to an hour's worth of time I could have been sitting there doing nothing, but I did something.

It's crafting. It's going to be dull.

At least its not Fallen Earth, where crafting takes real life times. Little blue bar takes 24 hours or more to make some things.

Why wouldn't  you just do work orders anyways?  It levels faster, no gathering needed, and you can get recipes or craft materials as rewards for completing them.

Crafting seems rather fair game to me.  Nothing really innovative but nothing real different from other games.  Least the itmes you can make especially if you crit are rather nice.

Now you want to talk about something tedious and a complete bore lets discuss gathering aether.  That's the one aspect of this game I just find boring to no end.  Everything else, far as I'm concerned, seems enjoyable to me.

Although if you want you can make the grinding complaint about any game because every mmorpg has it whether it's skill ups, levels, loot drops, pvp points, mob xp, quest xp, etc.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

LoTRO is about the same as in terms of crafting. I set out to make 200 dwarf iron bars hit make all ALT-Tab out go watch TV. Come back in about 15-20 min all done. Most games crafting has done this now. FFXI you had to sit there and make each item and hope for an HQ there were no craft all buttons back then....... So its not all that bad.

    Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
    Playing Rift

Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(

As to the original post...  if anyone can remember what it was...lol. I can only play about an hour a night, and I'm having a blast. I also have a child (2) and a wife, so I can only play later at night when I get a moment to myself. Although 30 mins is a small amount of time for an mmo, I think you will still have a good time. You can get to quest area, where you will more then likely have about 3-4 quest and just start getting them done. Log out when you need to and then jones about getting back in to finish. After a few sessions when you're done, recall and turn them in for the payoff. So far, I'm enjoying this game in spurts more then any other game I've played in the past few years.

Oh... and as to the crafting. Here's an idea: Instead of taking 300 hundred bars, just take 100. Go do some quest or PvP then take some more. Break that shit up. You will get crafting done faster your way.. but you'll also grow to hate it. There is a lot to experience in the game... take it all in my friend.
