AION is a great game. With the exception of the queues, the release has been impressive. Saying that, we all need to step back and remember one thing, AION is not a brand new game out of beta. AION has been in retail for over a year already. While it is new to us, it won't have the growing pains of a freshly released game. This year's AION release is identical to FFXI's release in the US many years ago. Remember, FFXI had that 18 month head start in Japan just like AION had a head start now. That isn't to take anything away AION. I very much enjoy the game. As much as people want to talk new release of the year, I'm sorry... but this is a 2008 title. We may not like it, but the fact is clear, it isn't new.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Then again, with the development times, what MMORPG is?
What is your point? WHY do we need to remember this?
Most likely in regard to arguments about which launches were better,or more stable yadda yadda...

People are comparing WAR, AoC, etc to AION. AION is in a different league than those games. They didn't launch in a different market for a year before launchng in NA and EU. You can't call it a new game release when it is not.

Queue is getting in my nervs, ncsoft is cheating they know the preorder numbers and still went with few servers the cheap way. I saw this in UK forum and makes sence: a flight with 400 sits will never sell 1000 tickects and ncsoft did that which is unfair. People payed all this money in a bad economy time and ncsoft puts people on wait of 2-3hours everytime they want to play.
The point is, don't blow too much smoke up NCSoft's ass and proclaim that it's the best launch ever, because the launch was a year ago.
You need to remember this so that you don't blow things out of proportion and are able to see the difference between the quality of launches from different developers.

Very true, if either of those had a year live (as they have now) the EU and NA launches would have been given praise rather than contempt. They have both vastly improved over the past year.

My question was really rhetorical and meant to point out that nobody gives a crap if it's new or not by your definition. This is not the lets be fair to all MMO's and use a solid historical perspecitve when we are comparing them committee. NOT having been out for a year in some other country is not a good excuse for a crappy launch. I don't care if a game has been out for 6 million years on some planet in Alpha Centauri, if it gets released tomorrow in North America and is the best game ever, then it is the best NEW game of the year. ( I switched to an imaginary game mainly because while being solid and having a decent launch, I think Aion is a pretty horrible game ).

Amazing...
For two weeks everyone was predicting the Aion NE/EU "Launch" was going to "FAIL". Now that it hasn't the new topic is this?? Oh it only did good because its "not really" a launch? Whats next, people only like the game because.........honestly give it up already. All I want to see is the people from two weeks ago on here saying they predicted wrong.
And yeah, we know, some of you dont like Aion. We get it yes, so your not playing it, yup got that too, so exactly why are you still trying to bash it? Your not even part of the Aion community, who cares that you don't like it, aren't there like hundreads of other games on this site you could be commenting on that you actually like and PLAY?
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
While the OP is trying to argue that the smooth launch argument doesn't hold water when the game was already released in other regions, I fear that the recent MO history disproves him. I'll try two examples. The first is WoW launch in US and EU. While the first release (US) had more problems than the second one (EU), both releases shared a similar amount of problems (mainly in the loot distribution database). A second example is WAR released in EU and US at the same time. Theoretically the two releases were identical. In practice however, GOA inability to keep up with the demands and the stalling behind the US servers led to a much faster falling of subscriptions.
In the case of Aion, we are talking about two different crowds of MMO players, who may or may not have the same gameplay priorities and whose approach to the challenges presented may or may not be different. Bottom line, just because Aion had a decent launch some months ago in another region, doesn't automatically mean that the same will be repeated in the west. Besides, the margins between a good, fair and a bad launch are different between regions. How many rage-quit posts did we see the past few days over one or two days of queues?
