I know that I have lost most of my freinds due to it. When it was first announced I didn't think much of it. Nor Did I really care. I did not plan to play it nor do I plan to now. I was however planning to play FFXI for many more years to come. Then all of the people I play with, more than half my linkshell including many officers and most of my family who played just quit. When I asked a lot of them why their responce was almost always "No point in playing if FFXIV is comming out soon might as well wait for that" or a similar variation of the same comment. A lot of my friends simply quit it and never plan to play any mmo again. Some quit, and have now said they will come back until FFXIV comes out. Most however just quit and moved to other games. I called some of them on the phone most of my old linkshell moved to AoC. My cousins just stopped playing mmos and said they will play FFXIV when it comes out if they still have the time then.
To me the announcement of FFXIV at first Did not matter. Some of you may recall At first I was advocating that it would be a lot like EQ. That it would take many years for FFXI to trully suffer major losses, and that when many players leave they would just merge the servers. Well I guess I was not really counting on it hitting so close to home so soon. I kinda see why so many people were upset when the game was announced, at the same time I can understand why SE would do it too. FFXI is almost 8 years old now. By the time the new one comes out Im sure it will be close to 10. That is more than 15% of the average male's life expectancy. When you look at it that way it will have been quite a good run FFXI had.
Anyhow I didn't think that I of all people would actually quit FFXI. Game I love so much because of its community, and its lore. I really think its time I haing up my spear as well. So In conclusion I just wanted to say
FFXI Was and is a great game, at first most of us who enjoy FFXI did not worry much about FFXIV killing FFIX, but I think one has to experience this kinda thing happening to them in order to understand how maybe the game itself will not die, but the game can die for you very easily.
If anyone else has had a experience like this feel free to post and share

I never plan on playing FFXIV because the group feature will not be there. It will just be another lonely Single Player mmo
i have thought about returning but with declining numbers i grow concerned. on some mmo's i would be okay with it like star wars galaxies for example if theres no groups i can solo some stuff or craft. but with game like ffxi where groups are corner stone low subscription numbers could be issue.
no no no... i havent lost them...
we're all taking a break and waiting for ffxiv! we have a website at linkshells.com and we've told all our members in the linkshell (and we have a lot) to keep checking back on the site for information on what server we're gonna meet up again!
most of the people from ffxi ive known them for years some for 5+ years, there is no way we're gonna go our seperate ways. i got most on my msn messenger
you are so welcome to join our merry band when ffxiv comes out
I think 14 wont be completely solo since party play has always been the core tactic in all FF series. I believe they said party play will have its advantages over soloing, and soloing wont be as hard as 11 when it just came out.
Am taking a break also, I started Eldritch Eponym LS and had a fairly good group of players returned to FFXI but it was starting to dwindle and many left due to Aion, Champions, D&D Unlimited and others. I chose to end my time in FFXI and put the LS on hatius until FFXIV launch becomes closer and more clear, and also more info as some of its kinda iffy to me atm.
I will more than likely be back and with the LS hoping to recruit again if I decide that FFXIV is what I'm looking for. Those that remained started a new LS and are still playing to my knowledge...
I loved FFXI but man, I played it prety "hardcore" for 3 years, I dont regret it, and I have not found a game worth playing since I quit 4 years ago. (I still have friends that I talk to this day from ffxi.) I did't really want to quit, but I guess I was just burnt out. Anyways if you still enjoy FFXI dont quit, because there is nothing out there that will fill the void of an ex ffxi fan, hell if I never gave my character away I would have gone back to ffxi. (I could never bring myself to start over.) I am hoping FFXIV can capture me like FFXI did. I also wouldnt write off FFXIV. Watch and see how things go. If all your friends are there and the game is good why wouldnt you want to play it. It should be a new challenege, Nothing stops you from playing both, if you can take that route.

no actually if you listen to this translated interview: http://www.ffxivtactics.com/2009/09/interview-with-komoto-tanaka.html
they're saying they have content for people who don't have time give them something to do, and for people who have all day to play give them something to do also.
it will be so interesting to see how they managed to mix this, but hey this is final fantasy. i wont be surprized if they manage to amaze us in awe once again. i am so excited!
Ok so 1 question. I didn't want to make another topic. Worth coming back tommorow? My highest job was 31 when i left. Should I wait for FF XIV or spend that time waiting in FF XI. =]
Depends on how you want to play.
As a serious gamer ,as much as I loved FFXI I dont think I could recomend it to someone to play it now if they are starting that low, unless they have friends available. If you have friends or know people on the server then sure it wont be so bad. If your going in alone its going to be like pulling teeth to do your cap quests, ZM mission, and CoP missions (not to mention ToA or the other expansion). By the time you get it all done youll be quitting for ffxiv anyways.
If you want something to play casually and goof around in ya you can play it. In this case id recomend playing as Beastmaster/White mage. Of course unless they changed something dont expect to get EXP parties as Beastmaster (BST) is meant for solo play. You can level at w/e pace you want to and do what you want. I loved bst it was fun to play around with but its not very fun until you get release. You get it at 30 something.
Thats my 2 cents worth, maybe some other ppl will give their, then you can decide whats best for you.
