Maybe it's because I can't latch on to any one game but just like gaming in general. I just don't get the arguements people get into over what games they play. I've played a lot of MMO's but I've never wanted to tell someone they were wrong for playing the game they wanted. I enjoy my experience (or not depending of the game) and I hope other people are having fun with what they are playing or doing.
Having Bob enjoy FFXI is not going to hurt my experience in City of Heroes. I couldn't call him an idiot for playing it because I don't know what satafies him in a game, nor should I care. What one player gets out of a game is most likely totally different than someone else. To call someone "stupid" for playing a game you don't like is STUPID. You have no idea what motivates other players or what makes them happy. Looking at a lot of the gaming message boards you would think that most of these gamers were married to each other.
I played World of Warcraft (although my first MMO was AC2). I don't play it anymore. Do I think the people that still play it are wrong? No, I don't because I don't know them or what makes them happy. Do I want WoW to die? No, why would it, it does not make my life horrible because it exists. Am I wrong for playing Champions Online and AION at the same time? I don't think so because I'm having fun. Do I care what you think. Not really.
So really I'm ranting against ranters which is pretty futile but I did need to get it off my chest and thank you for reading.

I agree 100%.
Nice post op. Agree. Can't understand why people can't live and let live, after all they are just games. Do you ever see people arguing over whats better between call of duty and medal of honour with as much pasion as you do about mmo's? For myself I think part of it is just the internet generation where you can behave like a total rude moron with little or no repucusions. I think another element is this genre of games by its very essence means you get to interact and loose yourself in a virtule world and acheive things that you wouldn't be able to do in real life. To clarify I think there is so much passion becouse maybee these games are worlds rather than just a pic up and play console game...............Or it could be becouse a lot of people are generaly tossers;). Just my thoughts, soz about the spelling, had a few drinks this eve:)
That's the thing though. You can't win against these jokers. Letting yourself even contemplate the ridiculousness of these clowns actions over a video game of all things...is just futile. The only way to win is by not playing.
When it comes to the fanbase/communities/forums of the Mmo genre, you have to look at it like going swimming in a pool filled to the top with feces. Trying to understand where all the shit is coming from, you dive deeper into the pool where it only becomes more murky and densely packed. When you emerge, you're going to be covered in shit and have the smell of it all over you. Then, by sheer act of consequence you'll be so overcome by the foul nature of the business that you'll end up puking in the pool yourself adding to the ever growing miasma making it worse for the sake of trying to make it better.
The only way not to drown in the cess pool is to not take that leap. Let it rot.
You are probably right but it still boggles my mind why people argue about games (fun totally subjective to the player). Bah, given enough time I'd probably submit an article to mmorpg.com, but I don't believe I'm a very good writer.

On that note, I may have to disagree. I was lucky enough to get into a great guild when I started playing MMO's. I'm still with them today and they really do counter-act the ugly players/boarders that can be experienced in games.
The right guild for anyone can make a huge difference on how they experience a game.

Do you cheer for a professional sports team? Same sort of irrationality, but many still do it.

I do, the Minnesota Vikings to be exact but I don't hate on all the other teams, even the ones in my division. It's entertainment, not my life.

To be clear I wasn't speaking about the players of said games, only the communities that spring up around them, such as I mentioned the forums etc.
Whenever you find someone actually comparing their personal character or virtue to others based on the video games they choose to play, just remember this one bit of philosophy:
You can not win an argument with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
If you really cannot see that my game is vastly superior to yours, then I wouldn't want you playing my game, anyway. </sarcasm>
More seriously, where's the fun in talking about games on a forum like this if we can't say this game is better than that one because of such and such? The sports analogy that someone made above is appropriate, though I think it's more comparable to someone saying this sports league is better than that one.
if u like the game your playing then play, tell people about it! but dont trash other games you can say i didnt like that game cuz of this or that. that it prefectly fine but just making a drag out post fight out of it just annoying.
IN THE FACE!
That was my first thought as well. It is more like comparing football with soccer or ice hockey.

To the OP.
There is one general reason why people argue about this. MMOs are dependent on people playing them for the quality of the game to be there.
In a single player game you couldn't care less if other people like it or not since the only thing that matters is: are you having fun?
Not so in MMOs. Your enjoyment of the game very much depend on other people playing it too. So its very important for many people to promote the game they like in order to secure their personal game experience and that the game they like have a future.
Other MMOs are a treat because they can potentially destroy your enjoyment of the game you like if they draw away friends or if they generally deplete your game from active players.
So its not so strange that people argue like this about MMOs. It makes sense to do so.

Only thing that matters to me in any game is: Am I having fun?

I really have to agree with the OP on this as well. Honestly, I'm fine with it if you don't like the game I'm playing, because after all, we are all wired differently, and we all have different tastes. Hence, just because I like something does not mean that another person is going to like it equally as well. However, what really annoys me though, is when people actually shower you with personal insults just because you're playing a game that they don't like. I'm not going to name names here, but there are some threads on this board that really smacks of this elitism, and it annoys me to no end. That doesn't mean that I'm going to take part in it though; honestly, we don't need more people stooping down to that level.

Yes of course, its self interest that drives people. The issue is that other players interest in your game influence whether or not _you_ are having fun when you look at MMORPGs.
So where in a single player game you can just ignore other games, in MMO's you cannot since other MMOs influence your experience in your MMO, and that is why you see the badmouthing of other games there is so common.
