Hi all!
I am a long standing EQ vet who has no moved onto Darkfall after various others.
I have been reading so many good things about this game that in a way it's making me think of EQ again. The adventure and openness of eq is what i miss. the exploration, the danger.
Could i be missing out on something with FE? could this be the game that finally gives an old eq vet a home? tell me your thoughts on whether an old eq player will find elements he loves in this world that is Fallen Earth!
I want to hear about level/skilling, adventure, can i explore, are there secrets to find? can i specialise? can i be unique ( to a point )

I only started playing last night so am not really qualified to answer all your questions.
The main points that make this game unquie as far as i know with my limited experience are
1) It is not fantasy.
2) That there are no classes, there are a ton of stats, abilities etc that you invest points into, this will definitely make you unquie. Your appreance can be unquie as well with all the customisation available.
Check this link out for an idea about the skills attributes that are in the game www.globaltechplanner.info/
3) Crafting seems to be well done here, i have never really crafted before, but plan to do so here.
4) I am looking forward to the PvP, as it is will be FPS style, and gang oriented.
The maps are huge but i have do not know how many there are etc, but the land looks desolate as you expect from a post apoc secnario, and i for one am looking forward to exploring the game and maps.
Everything is new here, a breahte of fresh air, in other MMOs within ten minutes i know the format, here i am leanring as i go and that makes it interesting and engrossing.
The graphics could be better in my opinion and i have to get used to switching from 3rd to 1st person game mechanics, which makes the game come across as cluncky, but that maybe down to my own in-experience and i am sure i will get used to it soon. I am not complaing, just pointing out the short coming of the game.
Also note the game is new and you will encounter a few bugs here and there, but a man of your experience in MMOs should know this ;-)
Yes the first 12 months of any mmo will be bugged and still be worked on so i dont mind that at all....lol i played EQ in it's first year and had 12 months solid of upgrading and tweaking options. Anyone remember the rendering bug in EQ where you logged in and nothing had any detail whatsoever?
I do enjoy crafting and hear that is a real strong point in FE.
This Skill system really interests me too. will everyone go for the same "uber" build or is it viable to just go your own way. HAHA i have always done things my way in anycase so that shouldnt matter to me
What do you mean by this? I am playing this game 3rd person view at all times.... Maybe you mean the FPS (real time shooting and aiming) aspect?
I agree the latter takes time to adjust, luckily I have played Neocron waaay back, and the mechanics there was not new for me at least. Neocron was more FPSlike in a way that there was not 3rd person view there at all..

As i mentioned in my post i am not complaining about it, but need to get used to it.
What i mean is that, i am(or my fingers are) programmed to play either an mmo (3rd person) or a FPS(first person) . Here there is a mix of both.
Addtionally you need to press "tab" here to go aiming mode. If i use a melee weapon then i prefer 3rd person, but since i prefer to shoot from a first person perspective i have to zoom my camera in if i have a rifle/pistol equipped . I am not yet used to this sequence of actions after only a few hours of play.
So ultimately my fingers get confused, as they are not sure if they are playing tradtionally mmo or an fps lol, but i will train them to behave as i want them to!
I pretty much play full time in 1st person and only change to 3rd to see what my gear looks like. Playing in fpv all the time definately adds a lot to it for me, I feel mor in touch with the game and tbh I just found it easier to control that way. The only problem I have is the occassional graphics glitch on incorrect weps showing, or none at all.

There is an option that makes it switch to FPS view automatically when you tab to aim mode, and out to TPS when you tab back, if that would help.
Excellent, i saw a option called "Auto FPS" or something like that, but was not sure what it did.
I will definitely click that on when i get in game,
Thanks a lot for the tip!
Edit: Just seen that pressing F9 enters you into fps mode
Old EQ vet here as well. In a nutshell, yes you will get that old feeling back with FE.

Skill system based not so much levels. You do level and it will drive you minimum stats up, but based on where you have assigned stat AP's, ie increase your int to craft and never touch your willpower and the minimum for int will quickly begin to advance beyond willpower as you level. It acts like a string pulling up all your int related skills such as medical, crafting etc while your lagging willpower affects mutations whitch will lag behind. Thats just the minimums, you gain ap as you quest, kill and scav and craft. Assign those points into the skill system directly to move to your max.
There are tons of quests and surprising they are really interesting too. Many are familiar from old sci-fi stories, but that doesnt mean they aren't a ton of fun anyway. Many times I'll come across a old facility or a town and obviously somthing happened there and I start looking for a nearby npc because I want to know the story.
The skill system gives you an idea how unique you can be,it also relates to appearance. Your a clone so you will look similiar to everyone but only in the way all families look a little alike. Tons of armor and clothing so everyone is usually dressed differently.
Explore to your hearts content the areas are huge. Your often rewarded for exploring by finding a catch of good scaving that nobody has hit before which translates into crafting better gear with better materials or selling on auction and making profit.
