...a free MMO?
It has to be: not a grindfest (so not asian, lawl.) and free, that's all.
My background: Wow, GW, VCO, Shaiya, A tale in the desert, all sorts of FPS, Project Torque, and MUCH more MMORPGs wich im too lazy to list.
By the way, i want to take the chance to talk about games like A tale in the desert, you ever played it?
Basically there's no pvp or combat at all, it's a fully social MMO, not like SL (where you create things from the nowhere ecc), example, let's say I encamp with 5 other people near the Nile, i will start getting wood, refine it to make boards, then get Straw(by taking Grass and let it on the ground for some mins) Sand and Mud to make bricks and from bricks an house (both bricks and boards are made from other tools). That was just an example of an awesome MMO, but it's only 24 hours free so they can get their ass nailed by a camel.

Haven & Hearth is a free MMORPG like ATITD, but with PVP. Not nearly as fun a crafting system, but if you're looking for something new and free it might interest you.
You're not going to find a MMORPG without some amount of grind, but the good ones seem to be Runes of Magic and possibly Perfect World (frequently heard it compared alongside ROM which I know to be a solid F2P WOW-like game.) D&D Online is the other big choice, as it offers rather distinct gameplay and was recently converted to F2P.

About the second part:
Perfect World is a grindfest, i got told.
Rune of Magic is a pathetic trial to copy WoW, and i fucking hate WoW, figure RoM.
I have D&D online, no grind, awesome, grouping with other people in dangerous dungeons, awesome.
But there is almst no PvP, I level up to compete with other, i tought, then, 95% of the whole players are in town cause dungeons are accessible from inside the town, so no exploration either :, but a good game, i had my fun.
P.S Now im downloading Football Superstars, soccer MMO, if, as in the video shows, every players controls a single soccer, i'm going to have fun. Heaven & Heartlooks ugly as fuck.

Isn't there really any decent MMO around?
There's really no decent p2p MMO's around either, so don't expect to find a decent f2p one...
If p2p was an option I could at least offer some titles that have potential.
- Aanarcy online: has a free section but low population. lots of content best of all the f2p games you will ever try. sci-fi genre
- Runescape: has a free section large pupulation. best browser game there is lots of content.
-Wurm online: has a free section low population. best sandbox game there is. very realistic world good game a must try IMO.
- Planetside: MMO-FPS-RPG and suck i didn't like the grpahix i just didn't give it much of a chance i guess.
- DDO: just went f2p i don't like it for some reason but its free and a very polished game.
- The chronicles of spellborn: says register for free on there site i have not tired this game yet.
and if those fail you there are virtual worlds like secondlife and there.com
Right now i am not playing any thing my self , I am looking forward to Mechscape if it ever gets out.
It's been in development for awhile, im too quite excited about the game hopefully it comes out soon.
