I tried it to lvl 22 and I will admit the game is fairly nice to look at, definately top 5 grahics-wise, but not nearly as impressive as the hype- This is not a comment on end game or PvP. It is about an immersive quality, PvE experience. Conan and Lotro are more detailed and prettier imo. Wings are cool, but the story details and the quests to support that story are clearly 'bolt-on' (although overall world history/concept is cool) . Every single quest is kill this, grab that. And you will run, alot. Needs mounts, the flying is used in a small portion of the PvE experience, so far. Also, the lack of many instances ruin the game imo. Instances help with immersion and this game is really a means to get to end game, made pretty. It's a grind unless you do not consider endless running around and kill x quests, not grind. I think that it is personally. Writing real story chains and solid mission chains requires alot of creative effort and the quests in this game are simply using game mechanics; chanigng the scene, monster and rewards, over and over and over again. Nothing custom hardly at all. There are a few lame cut scenes. Also the crafting is very unimaginative imo. The game has merit, but if you are a person who also likes PvE, I would be shocked if you do not end up as bored as I am. Cannot bring myself to login... If you need immersion on the way to end-game, this is not it. One gamers .02
it seems every day one of these ignorant clowns makes a post about a grind existing in AION -- You fools who keep starting threads about the grind, need to get this through your heads -- ALL MMO's HAVE GRINDS -- EVERY LAST DAM ONE OF THEM -- PERIOD. END OF STORY. If you DO NOT LIKE the MMO grind, then please by all means give up playing MMO's -- why you ask ? BECAUSE ALL MMO's HAVE GRINDS.
Buy a Wii, play a FPS, get John Madden FB -- or better yet go outside for a nice jog.
Not all MMO's make you repeat a quest 50 times to gain levels. A few mmo's have a good story and quests so you don't really notice a grind. However Aion is a Korean game therefore will have one hell of a grind, more so than any western mmo we play. RF Online was a eastern to western MMO and it did have a big grind and look how well the game did. (its shut down)
Fact is, Aion isn't your normal mmo grind, its much worse and it will get even worse before it starts looking better. It was designed as a grinder. If you think it will be like any other MMO grind then you will be mistaken, its not a western MMO, Don't expect it to play like one.
One things im liking about aion is that grinding is a good alternative to lvling. I hate quest driven mmogs.
Seriously why does my character have to be the worlds personal b*tch. Oh my cats in a tree run for 30 minutes kill 50 ents and run back to me for 30 minutes. I hate quests.
Love to grind though specialy in groups. Thats why i still play mmos. Grinding a dungeon goofing off with a bunch of players. YA thats why i pay 15 dollars a month for.
Not to go do some cheesy story saving npc number 200000583883.

"Not all MMO's make you repeat a quest 50 times to gain levels." -- been playing since 9/22 and so far I can honestly say -- NEITHER DOES AION. nice try though. Where did you get this from ? Because after saying this, it is painfully obvious you are quite ignorant when it comes to AION...

oh and have some guys and tell us what MMO you play ? --
Well, I recently re-subbed to WOW (haven't played since launch) played for 3 days then bought Aion(Darkfall was kinda disappointing and Mortal Online won't be out for...awhile? I needed something to play). The Quest/Grind level in WOW and Aion is almost exactly the same, just as is the type of quest and the level of repetition. If you like the PvE in WOW, you will either like it in Aion or you are trying too hard not to like it.
The Flying is kinda cool, the storyline is interesting enough. There is nothing very innovative or revolutionary about the game, but it is worth 50 bucks plus a $15 sub for a few months till something better comes out, and beats the alternatives.
I feel like a lot of the people in this thread are mentally challenged where the others are on the money. ALL MMO's have quests to kill X or travel and talk to Joe blow... Other than darkfall that Darkfalls PvE is the whackest of whack... Then some people are saying
"Typical Asian grinder"
LMFAO...
Typical huh... i'm 23, some people are 30+ sounds more like a WoW clone than an asian grinder as I have quested all the way through not a single session of "Grinding" mobs for xp or even being forced to. So if by quest grinding = asian grinder ... then EQ, EQ2, WOW and all other mmo's are Asian grinders.
so please... stfu. If you dont like it thats one thing... but pretend your an adult and move on to something you do like which is prolly not an MMO.
"Sometimes people say stuff they don''t mean, but more often then that they don''t say things they do mean"
Is killing mobs a viable alternative to questing? I don't mind some quests, but frankly I'm sick of having to do a ton of questing to level. Most MMOs I played pre WoW I rarely quested, but it seems most games since WoW, can't get anywhere if you don't quest.

Absolutely. And the dropped gear is as good as the quest reward gear.
Would you rather a game where you sit in the same camp spot, pulling the same mobs, for hours on ends?
Would you rather a game where you have to camp for hours and hours killing the same mobs over and over, just waiting for another mob to spawn that could take 12 -/+ hours to spawn? Perhaps spending weeks if you get unlucky?
People are so spoiled these days in MMO's with the whole concept of "mounts" and honestly while playing Aion, I haven't felt the NEED to grind once. I have sat and ground out some exp while waiting for night time to come to have a certain mob that only comes out at night to spawn for the quest I was currently doing, but could have easily gone on to do other quests and come back later.
The beauty of the "flying" system, lies in it's gliding. If you figure out how to use the terrain to your advantage to keep gliding and bouncing back up (as well as learning how to bounce while gliding) you will be able to make much more use out of it than you originally expected. In a way, it's sort of like having a mount, you just don't have to stop to use it (and it's more situational.)
As for quests.. Sure, some quests may seem bolt-on.. but then again, you must not pay much attention to the over-all going on of the game. Also, you haven't even gotten to the Abyss yet. The whole aim of the game pre-25/30 is to gear you towards your days in the Abyss. Also, if you REALLY pay attention, you will notice that a LOT of the side quests are involved with the campaign quest for a certain area.
As far as lore goes, how can you compare this game to a game like WoW... or lotro, or even Conan? All these games have some kind of lore built up behind them for years (Hello, lord of the rings has 20+ years behind the damn thing). If you played all the warcraft games, or read the lord of the rings books... you're going to know the overall story. With Aion, you have to learn as you go, and pay attention. If you skipped through watching lord of the rings just to watch all the epic battles, would you know what was going on? No. All's you would hear is the name of the town millions of times, who they're fighting, and whats going on during the battle.
You use the term "grinding" too losely. But you need to realize, that no matter where you go.. you're always going to have to grind to SOME degree. Name one game that you don't have some kind of time sink to get to the end game. If you want to be really extreme about it, every single player RPG can be considered a grinder, because you grind your way through a story line and progress accordingly. Isn't that what you do in MMO's but with more freedom, interaction, and a never-ending story?
Get your head out of your ass, and give it a chance. If you go into a game thinking it's going to be a grind, or really anything completely NEW and DIFFERENT, you're going to be sadly mistaken and let down - and worst of all - it will be a self induced grind.

Love how people try to race to max lvl than start saying its a grind.. well yeah its less then a week and your on it all day... Give it a break and play acouple hours a day or somthing, man i haven't grinded yet, and im sure when i get 25+ i'll start doing PvP alot more and thats never a grind, at least for me it isn't.
Those that are saying it's a grind want to reach cap till their free month is FREE but since they won't reach it in time with their whining they just say it's an asian grinder.
I'm with you. I'm having a blast with the game so far. Most fun I've had in quite some time.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I'm with you. I'm having a blast with the game so far. Most fun I've had in quite some time.
Bringo. Best game I've played since DAoC. It's nice to actually have a decent RvR game to play again, especially since Warhammer was such a letdown. I also like how it actually has some difficulty/effort required to do things, such as leveling. Everything has been so watered down and handed to everyone. Nothing means anything anymore in half the MMOs out there because your decisions can either be reversed (faction transfers, really WoW?) or the rewards are just handed to you/everyone so you don't feel bad ;;.
Aoc & Lotr are gear towards pve and pvp is just a side show.
Aion is more focused in pvp (hell you don't even get instanced dungeons until lvl30). Granted aion has a lot of solo pve and that can be easy mode, but I think the group pve area's make up for it.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
The OP does sound almost how i feel. And quite frankly maybe mmo's aren't my thing anymore. I keep going from game to game trying to find something that captivates me and keeps my interest. I think i don't mind the grind so much when i have more control over my characters development? Not sure. At least in a skilled based game i knew what i was working towards with the grind in these preplanned classes it just doesn't seem worth it to me. I have zero control on how my character turns out in the end and what he can do. So I always end up making tons of alts trying to find a class that i really enjoy. It typically turns out i like some parts of the class but not others. Like ranger i loved the range/melee/traps, but the dps was horrible, my cleric did more dmg. To compare to another game before its change swg was nothing but a massive grindfest but i enjoyed it cause i got to choose what skills to pick next and what to work towards, even wow with it's talent tree could kinda keep your character fresh with trying different builds and testing them out. So far in Aion it is straight kill kill kill get next lvl grab new skills....kill kill kill lvl up grab new skills. And i know some ppl actually really enjoy it, i can even bring myslef to play it now and again. I just want ....more.
Exactly how I fee. If only they had made a rich chacter skill system. The game is so bloody simple. I am surprised at this day and age in MMO's we are getting simpler, but maybe that is the trend in MMO's...simple sandbox games.
We are spoiled for what....wanting to have fun? EQ1 was a long time ago, games should evolve As far as lore goes, how can you compare this game to a game like WoW... or lotro, or even Conan? All these games have some kind of lore built up behind them for years (Hello, lord of the rings has 20+ years behind the damn thing). LOL---20+ years? You must be very young. It has over 70 years behind it. .. you're always going to have to grind to SOME degree. Name one game that you don't have some kind of time sink to get to the end game. If you want to be really extreme about it, every single player RPG can be considered a grinder, because you grind your way through a story line and progress accordingly. My head out of my ass? I am simply commenting on what Aion is, I did not compate it to others. But I will...all hell you are a longtime WoW player, so lets use that. I think it is funny all the people who were so into WoW have this love hate thing going on. They all want to break free and they are on the lookout for the next WoW killer. Login into any MMO and the damn chat is always the same with a new game.
Aion v WoW...same thing, maybe add gliding, WoW has more content and richer character development. Gasp..I know, it is true though! Every single Aion character is almost going to be the exact same, exact.
If you think this is the anti-WoW, you are very wrong. It will never surpass WoW and is simply a polished game that is not named WoW.
Not being a hater, these are just pretty basic, easy to see observations. My comments were on the lack of immersive PVE in MMO's. The concesus from the haters seem to be...
1. Suck it up
2. Be a man and grind
3. Quests that make you grind are not considering grinding, so I am not really grinnding at all!
4. The goal is end-game PvP the weeks of (not) grinding to get there are just a side diversion, it is not about the journey
5. If I have a problem with this I should quit MMO's
I may do that, I am simply hopeful that there are enough people like me out there who want a richer game experience and that perhaps someone will give it to us??
Honestly, I think you're right on the money here. Also, Diablo 3 should provide some nice entertainment for a while too.
And yeah, so what if Lord of the Rings has 70+ behind it, I didn't know an exact number all's I knew was that it was around before I was born. Never had an exact date.

Im' not sure there's that much to do even if you reach the level cap.
I think people are expecting this to be wow. They need to reach the level cap to do dungeons, raid, or pvp.

never made it anywhere near the level cap.

Gathering = XP
Crafting = XP

Questing = XP

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
I totally agree with you Jimmy
OP,
Aoc & Lotr are gear towards pve and pvp is just a side show.
Exactly how I fee. If only they had made a rich chacter skill system. The game is so bloody simple. I am surprised at this day and age in MMO's we are getting simpler, but maybe that is the trend in MMO's...simple sandbox games.
I am hopeful for GW2 and Algenon.
Honestly, I think you're right on the money here. Also, Diablo 3 should provide some nice entertainment for a while too.
And yeah, so what if Lord of the Rings has 70+ behind it, I didn't know an exact number all's I knew was that it was around before I was born. Never had an exact date.
Im not sure you have any idea you know what your talking about since you:
A) dont play the game
never made it anywhere near the level cap.
sorry Sally...But you LOSE !!
So the journey to the endgame means nothing? No... im sorry. You lose.
