I reckon LOTRO will be the better option between the two.

The population in DDO is kind of low too.

  • BACONXBACONX Member UncommonPosts: 253

Hasn't the Free play increased the population?

  • wwsfeelingwwsfeeling Member Posts: 3

Nope. LOTRO have a better population compare to DDO.

Both of them have free trials. You can try and have a look and see which one you will like.

DDO is free, with a store.

    LotrO is sub based.

Both are PvE games first and last.

DDO is free to play now so download it and play.

If you don't like it you can do a free trial of LoTR

I'm not so sure about claims that LoTR pops are better....

Maybe at level cap since that's where most of the pop is but not starting out. DDO has a "new lease on life" so to speak, lots of new players coming in.

Personally I wouldn't bother with LotR, its the same old, same old - lots of "kill 10 rats" I mean a lot. DDO has much better "adventures". Think of them like a night of P&P D&D adventures. Takes a couple of hours maybe and you get your fix until the next time.

I would say that population at lower levels is ALOT higher in DDO than LotrO. Since DDO:Unlimited release the servers have been packed.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I have tried both and ended up with LOTRO.  Honestly haven't gone back to DDO since the free thing, but have been with LOTRO for two years and still really enjoying it. It has been worth the time as I too have limited play time due to work and RL.

The trial would be a good idea, give you  a chance to compare the two.

Play both and decide for yourself.   Sign up for LOTRO and play DDO for free.    I have both and enjoy both, wish I had more time though.

Right now I am enjoying DDO more, probably due to being burned out on LOTRO.

I haven't played lotr, but I'm a recent VIP on DDO.. The combat in DDO is amazing.  Fast passed and it takes a degree of SKILL to actually play well.  It's not a button mash.  However if PVP is what you're looking for, i suggest a different game.  From what i've heard it has very un-balanced pvp.  The quests are interesting, and the game supports both solo + teams doing your missions.

With DDO being free to play I would certainly give it a shot if I were you absolutely nothing to buy and if you don't feel it worth your time head for LOTRO for the record I play DDO a bit since it went FTP and spend most of my gaming time playing LOTRO, but with the ability to play one for free it is pretty much a no brainer to head out and see for yourself.  Since it went ftp DDO is a bit more solo friendly than before population is a bit higher and in my opinion it's a nice game as ftp.  LOTRO still has a larger population than DDO and is going to be even more active once the expansion drops sometime this fall and in my estimation you may find a bit more variety and a much more involved story than in DDO.  But still if you don't mind dropping the money give LOTRO a shot after trying the one that'll cost ya nothing.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

    Play both!

I would have to agree with Torak. DDO is free so you can try it out without a lot of hassle. And there are quite a few people in the new player area. a horde of them.

Otherwise LOTRO is a good game as well.

However, you really can play both.

Lotro is a good game, but the last expantion and the last patch(book) transformed lotro into a wow clone, and for a new player

is really difficult to find players available in the areas outside Moria.

ddo is not at the levels of LOTRO as graphics and gameplay, obviously much more "old", but has much potential, it is a good game, fun,  and is full of new players.

i'v the Lifetime sub in Lotro, but... i play DDO

I am just hitting level 30.. but I've found that getting groups for fellowship quests is relatively easy, whenever I need to get a group for some quest I cannot solo myself.. I rarely have trouble, unless it's like really late or really early..

LotRO was once a great game for casual and normal players, probably the best game I've played the first couple of years, but has been concentrating on hardcore kins lately, so I'm hesitant to recommend it anymore...it's kind of losing it's soul so to speak.

    My personal preferences...

    pre-Moria = LOTRO

    post-Moria = DDO

  • NeoWolf73NeoWolf73 Member UncommonPosts: 29

There was a time where I would have said DDO.. because I ama huge fan of dungeons and Dragon in general, having had a very long history with the PnP game.. but I was in the DDO beta and it just didn't do it for me.  Things may have changed but nothing I have seen or read has convinced me thus far.

I also felt like the "Eberron" setting was more of a tag on afterthought than an initial design decision because the game the races, the places have very little to do with the Eberron setting at all.

and then there is the fact I am a massive Tolkien fan since practically birth lol and LOTRO although not perfect does a far far better job of honoring the IP than DDO does its IP.

So for me LOTRO all the way.

Im playing both off and on right now. I'd say LOTRO if ya had to choose.

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

I have downloaded both, so we shall see. I appreciate all of the comments and information. Thank you.

I did 6 months of LotRO but didn't buy the Moria expansion when it came out. I'd say that 80% of players moved over to Moria, leaving me stuck at Epic Quest 8 with noone to party with. My 6 months ended about a month after Moria came out, so I dropped it and started DDO. Loved it, but it was pretty hard solo, you really had to party to do the quests (as D&D is supposed to be) but I live in Australia and finding a common time slot with my US neighbours has not an option.

My sob to DDO ended about two weeks after it went Free-2-play but there are stacks of people on now at all levels and at all times (well, on Khyber anyhow). I got sucked back to LotRO with the promise of a free Mirkwood and the fact that Moria had dropped to $10. Still finding it hard to group outside of Moria, so I guess I'll take the plunge and start the Moria path and maybe come back to finish the Epic Quests in SoA at a later stage.

Does DDO still make you break open boxes and barrels?

It was a great game, but the whole 'smash every damn box/barrel you come across' thing got real old, real quick.

    Currently playing: Vanguard: SOH

  • SkarnSkarn Member CommonPosts: 16

Yeah, you still can break open objects, but it's not necessary (although breaking every container in a quest does give you a bonus to XP).  At the beginning of the game, breakables do contain some necessary starting gear like arrows, potions and money.
