Is it possible to turn chat off, or go to some channel that no one can chat with you? I get tired of all the n00bs and stuff spamming the chat.

use the x in the chat box, or create a second window with chat and use options to filter out anything you do not want to see
oh my favorite tip after patch days and dissappearing hot keys
alt H gets your hot key bar back ..........
