This is something I was thinking bout. Iam not a hater or anything, but what if for any strange reason, WoW was shut down (not that it would be or anything) 1) What would happen to the MMORPG genre? 2) What game would you WoW players flock to? 3) What MMORPG game you think will have the highest population? And why 4) Would other types of MMORPGs finally sprout?
Personally, I could not care less. I do not love nor hate WOW. It is irrelevant to my interests.
1) THATS difficult to say and highly depends on the reason. Lets say the reason is random, like Blizzard goes bankrupt like Lehmann brothers, it would mean little. I guess most companies would tinker as before. There never was a winning formula that can be repeated like WOW, so it would mean we won't see another giant like it again. Impact on the gerne in the long term: likely neglectable.
2) Most would likely stop playing MMOs. I would suggest LOTRO, Aion or EQ2 as it is, to them.
3) Beats me. As I said, most people would rather stop playing MMOs, so I don't expect any large impact. Every MMO would grow a bit, but the relations would stay the same, I guess.
4) Other types? No, I think game industry is quite conservative.
It's really a bit "if". Hard to imagine it happens.
as ive said so many times before, for wow to die the stupid people that play wow would all have to die, and when that happens door to door salesman telemarketers and gold farmers will all be put out of buisiness as well because its the kind of numb brained boobs that play wow that buy things from telemarketers and tv infomercials and door to door salesmans.
Just trying to live long enough to play a new, released MMORPG, playing New Worlds atm

majority of the veterans have quit WoW like 2 years ago
there are like tons of promising MMOs out there, im not WoW hater or anything, i used to go hardcore on WoW myself, but seriously, ppl need to start learning the truth that WoW is no longer the "Best" MMOs out there

Er.. it never was. It was just a solid, simple, casual focused title.
This is something I was thinking bout. Iam not a hater or anything, but what if for any strange reason, WoW was shut down (not that it would be or anything) 1) What would happen to the MMORPG genre? The same thing that happened when Rome fell. 2) What game would you WoW players flock to? Wouldn't be just one game, people would branch out into all forms of MMO's trying with epic fail to find one that was similar to WoW. 3) What MMORPG game you think will have the highest population? And why Raid guilds would probably go to EQ, hardcore to FFXI, RvR to... eh DAoC... dunno about Warhammer of AoC haven't played those so just speaking for that of which I do know about. 4) Would other types of MMORPGs finally sprout? TRUE WoW clones... not the "clones" fanbois whine about... but near identical in catering to everyone, but probably with updated graphics to set it apart from WoW so it could shine as the "next best thing" But honestly... WoW is not going anywhere for a long-ass while. EQ is still played, UO is still played, christ even EQ2 is still played which is a phenomenal feat in my eyes.

MMO developers would continue to be money hogs and release expansion packs that forces their current subscribers to buy it just like they have been doing for years. Though to be honest I don't think they ever stopped even for Warcraft. Still, that's one main reason why WoW was so successful. Blizzard never made players buy the expansions. The old classic WoW is still there. It just gets effected by patches still.
If WoW were to 'die', the story upon which the final moments are built will be written and published for decades. A high profile fantasy author would probably be selected to give a fitting end to the 'world of warcraft' but millions will complain that the book is not a faithful representation of how it actually went down. Others will understand that, since there are many servers, the heroes will not be the same across the world.
Years from those final moments, high school children will be required to read about the final battle. Young boys and girls will be urged to feel some kind of comraderie with the heroes but will ultimately just BS their way through another written exam. College students who remembered the day their daddy cried will write compelling arguments as to how the last chapter is our modern day Tolkien. Inevitably there will be philosophical debates and finally, the US Government itself will argue about whether or not Warcraft's story deserves to be consiered literature. The President of that Future will finally admit LIVE on all the major networks about how he was once a WoW junkie - and it clearly didn't make him a horrible person.
Republicans and Democrats will then link gaming with the president, and henceforth, those who voted for the pres will be pro gaming and those who voted otherwise will be against gaming. Churches and other places of worship will preach the good/evil of such things and at the end of it all...
Some random game company in the future will create a MMORPG based around the legendary Warcraft novel that shook the nation.
This is something I was thinking bout. Iam not a hater or anything, but what if for any strange reason, WoW was shut down (not that it would be or anything) 1) What would happen to the MMORPG genre? You'd have WOW clones appear as all the dev's would attempt creating their own company 2) What game would you WoW players flock to? They'd spam clicking their WOW hotkey and wondering whats going on then they'd break out in a sweat not unlike drug addicts who don't have a fix. Then the tears would begin to flow as they realize they wasted 2-3 years playing a computer game for nothing and now after having failed school, pissed off their parents all they have left is that min. wage job. They'd flock to whichever game looked like WOW and spend most of their time talking about how l33t they were in WOW. 3) What MMORPG game you think will have the highest population? And why I'd have to guess and say possibly LOTR, EQ2 & Warhammer. When I tried those games I met alot of former WOW players who seemed to like what they were playing. 4) Would other types of MMORPGs finally sprout? Given the success of WOW as I said previously you'd have tons of clones. Freerealms for example, the graphics look very similar to WOW that cartoony style yet they've implemented the micro management in game store to earn money, paying real cash for in game items. The game is supposed to be targetted at kids but what kids have access to credit cards to purchase game items ?
Are you planning some "Joker" social experiment that tests the boundaries of a player's sanity if one day they woke up to find that WoW has ended? If you are, that's cool man.
Just stop with these threads. I swear to god there's like 5 everyday.
Well I do see a lot of WoW hatered. So I was just wondering, what do the haters of WoW think, will be the next top MMORPG if WoW (And Blizzard) for some reason shut down.
This topic seems to attract all of the anti-WoW people for some reason. I guess they're really hoping xD.
But seriously, I think the effects of it would depend on exactly how and why it died. I really can't think of any scenario, simply because WoW dying all of a sudden is.....unimaginable.

It's really a bit "if". Hard to imagine it happens.
1.) It would be less popular and a lot of people would stop playing them.
2.) Probably either Aion, Free Realms, War, or maybe possibly even champions/CoH (I prefer CoH but champions is newer. : ).
3.) Probably free realms because it appeals to a wider audience and it's free.
4.) no new genres. Maybe a more hardcore game would be preferred then. because it would slip back into the niche and hardcore audience.
That's what I think anyway.

If WoW died...
A certain friend of mine would wander out of his house in a daze, sheilding his eyes from the sunlight, and ask me what year it is.
lol so true WAIT.. maybe wow is breeding zombies to take over the world? DAMN!! where is my shotgun!
"Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun."
If Wow dies , Aion transforms to WoW and that keeps going for years :P

I'll go with what Bill said in Ghostbusters:

Then along with SWG vets we would have WOW vets waiting for someone to give them their game back for years and shoot down anything that was different
