This is one of the most common questions asked about the game but unfourtanetely the answer will dissapoint you. Grouping in this game is possible, ofcourse, but there is little to no need to do so. Most of the missions (=quests) in this game are perfectly soloable so even if you can group for them there is really little reason to do so, therefore most people in this game do not group.
There are a handful of missions that require a group but they are few and far between. Add do this that there are multiple instances of the same zone and then you will have even harder to find people that want to group (because they are spread out between multiple instances).
I would say that one of this game biggest flaws is that it is so solo-play focused that it loses its appeal to alot of MMORPG players who are traditionally playing the game to interact with other people and not just the AI.
That being said the game has alot of good points but sadly the grouping/community aspect is not one of them and probably one of the reasons why the game is already starting to lose subscribers. Because why play a monthly fee for a predominantly soloing game?
I love grouping in an MMO and I will gladly play this if its community / group heavy. That's one thing I loved about EQ1 and FFXI.
So far there are very few things you do where you need to group. Also grouping takes a hit in xp and since xp is tight grouping doing solo stuff will hurt you some by cutting your kill xp down quite a bit. Doing group mobs gives less xp then killing solo mobs so there really is no reason to group other then to do the few group instance quests or help out people for charity since you won't get anything really for helping.
Also grouping is pretty poorly balanced, tanking and healing are there but most people don't pay much attention. Agro is not very good and things will agro on everyone and esp anyone that tries to heal.
So generally grouping needs a lot of work
The group instances are somewhat promissing in that they are full of interactive parts and simple puzzle like things. But without fixing the other stuff they are just something you do to finish a quest.
Every 1-10 level area in WoW has a small cave for people to get used to grouping. They are so small that two hours of playing you forgot you even did them.....Do you know the ones i'm referring too ?......Well that's what the group content in Champions Online is, at least 1-20. Not only are they small I could almost do them myself, and two players are overkill. Most times you can ask for help in open chat and get someone. Some times you have to bounce servers 3 or 4 times to get one to help, because they have like 100 people cap per server.
After playing the bata for three days I found that this game is not for me because I like to group. I would suggest to not even try this one if you like to group. And don't tell me it was only bata, because it's like an off line game with people around you !

In CO the first group lairs are around lvl 28 I don't think you can get the quests till like 26 or so. There is one at 28, one at 31, and one at 32. There is also at least one on MI that is I think 34. Those are the ones I've done so far. These are all group lairs that require a 5 man team to complete.
These lairs by the way are pretty small. I believe they are all smaller then the smallest wow dungeon.
One of the worst grouping games i've ever played. If you want to play a super hero game with teaming try city of heroes. Even with the AE disaster in coh, you'll still find more teams than champions. For gods sake, its easier finding teams in Vanguard or Ryzom than Champions.

True. They completely botched this part.
However it can be fixed. All they need to do is to add more group missions and high level raid bosses, something like Galactus, that gives good enough reward for people to bother with it.
Champions Online is basically a good game, it just lacks some important features like good group and PvP content.

Just wait for XIV, it's only a year away at worst.

I think this game is probably not for you, then. It seems to me that people avoid grouping, whenever they can.
