What do I do. Which one is going to satisfy a working guy with small bits of time yet that has a long weekend? I'm posting in both game forums by the way...
Both are solid PvE MMOs (the best out there imo) but lacking in PvP. They are VERY different from eachother so you have to try them to see which one you like.
LotrO is a more traditional MMO so its easy to learn. Its very solo friendly so its harder to find groups if you enjoy grouping. If you want a beautifull immersive world with alot of "fluff" and great story/lore then you will probably like it.
DDO on the other hand is very different from other MMOs and has very little in common with EQ/WoW. Its alot more complicated and relies more on grouping. If you enjoy dungeon crawling, deep character custimization and fast combat then DDO may be for you.
DDO is free to play and LotrO have a free trial so just download and find out which one suits you best.
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
DDO is a better game. Its just more fun, the levels involve problem solving, the playstyle is engaging and the xp comes in big chunks instead of per spiders killer. I tried LOTRO several times and really wanted to like it but its just a substandard WoW/EQ2 clone that can't hold my attention for long enough. DDO is now free.
RE: Your time constraints. I have a gf & hold down a 45 hr a week job and DDO suits me fine. You can jump instantly into a party from a frankly huge list since they made it f2pp. The DDO partying system is the best around and the dungeons can be short or very long for weekends.

Uhhh It's not a wow clone...lol...
Maybe a little similar to EQ2, but not a wow clone.
As for the games, one is free, the other is sub. The free one requires you to buy extras, races, classes, items, weapons, adventure packs, npc help, and even pay for every 4 levels of play unless you get the very rare coin drop to level.
Don't play DDO solo. It's terrible. play it with friends/guilds. It's quite fun.
I subbed to LOTRO for around a year. It was fun, but IMHO Moria kinda killed it for me. It changed into a grind for me at that point. DDO has been a breath of fresh air. While Soloing is much tougher, with the right class and henchmen combo you can still do a fair amount, at least the first half of the game. The dungeons are much more fleshed out to me in DDO than other games in general, and traps! I like that there are traps, secret doors, etc... This adds a great feel to the game as well.
If you decide on DDO, you can do like I did and go out and spend some cash get all the mods you want and all the class/race unlocks for ~100 bucks and you have the equivalent of a lifetime sub for far cheaper than any other P2P game.

I bet you're going to regret that decision!
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Anything is possible, but one can hope it was a good decision. So far I'm happy with it. This lets me play casual, and have everything unlocked for any toons I make. I just want it to tide me over until GW2 or Star Wars:TOR.
I didnt like LOTRO when i tested it, but when i tested www.ddo.com it was one of the best PvE/RPG games i ever played, i have played WoW for like 4 years but DDO its much funnier in PvE but its much harder than WoW the lvl system and the skills is much harder. (Sry for my english)

DDO hands down, because it has me interested in a way LotR never managed.
LOTRO no contest.
DDO is barely even an MMO, probably even less so than Guild Wars...
Its just a quest hub with repeptitive mini instances and badly animated ugly graphics.
