I personally feel that future MMOs should start removing enemy only name tags via World PvP. Whether you're trying to level up alone in the wild and wish to remain unbothered, retreating from combat, or waiting merely trying to get the jump on someone, not having enemy name tags will encourage the use of the environment.
I feel that most of the environment in these games go unused, as the typical beacon name tags will give players away, e.g., image 1, image 2...

Enemy name tags should only appear above your target if you click on them. As of now, there is no element of surprise...

I think the worst example of that was SWG. All enemies showed up as a red blip on your mini map even players. SWG people were so newbish early on they didn't seem to notice a red blip coming directly at them...
Of course.
Darkfall had this since its inception, one of the many reasons I consider it to be the only real PVP mmorpg around. (eve has empire space so that wont fly with my opinion of PVP should be)
mm i would love it if name tag were removed .
did you play game like lineage 2
did you see some aion pvp theres so many player you just see a whit band of name nothing else
when there are more the a cetrain amount say 15 total the tag shoud desapear auto
yes in some game the tag is removable but often player want to show off title
why not put it on the cloak instead or like wow they go a kind of shirt that
could show title etc
nothing should be over our head
You could see the name over the head of your enemy in Lineage 2.
In any case I disagree with the premise. though the pictures are funny, the name above the enemy head at least lets you know who killed you or who you killed.
You wouldn't be able to properly use spies or scouts if you eliminated the name.
This a a video game and not real life. you need some indicators as to who you are going after. It would be different if cusomization was so good that you could view people by what they look like.
So really, why the anonymity? Using the enivironment? Well they could easily incorporate stealth or the like. Many classes have this. Or just blending into the backgroud. Once you become visable then you could see their name.

DF and MO both have no nametags.
That sort of thing is for PVP, everyone else would probably throw a fit towards anything that might present a glimmer of challenge.

So instead allow people who would tolerate playing the game on the crappiest settings to remove shadows, plants or other details that would make seeing people easier. You know thats what people would do, because we've been doing it in FPSs since forever;) So what that does is force people to use these same cruddy settings or be at a serious disadvantage, UNLESS, graphic settings can't be changed forcing everyone to play the game equally. This would work very well on a console where you can't tweak anything. On a PC though, blah. I want my games to look better than freakin Darkfall=)
I loved this in darkfall. You could literally follow someone around jumping behind trees and they wouldn't know you were there.
It felt real, and therefore immersive. If only that game had more money for development.
The Official God FAQ
they could put the name on the plastron instead or on the armor or whatever
make it blink if he killed you etc
it does not have to be over the head invasive like it is
in a arena i dont care but in a game like aion or l2
no way we dont see the name anyway its just a big wave of white letter floating for no reason
they could put all that on our armor or cloak or whatever they come up with
The name should show up in the combat log for those who really need it.
Also, it's quite reasonable for names to appear for friendly units (whatever they happen to be in the game concerned). Being able to see a name makes it much easier to start socializing with someone.

They would also have to disable the ability to tab through available targets as well, no?
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
Nah, it wouldn't be a problem if the tab target system had a closer range.
Aion has names. Without them, I'd be forced to reroll my 24 Sorc (who's merely 40% tall on the height chart) and use a character who was 0% tall on the height setting instead.
Mostly it's that unless a game has clear, set character models (COD4, TF2, Planetside, etc) it's a bad idea to not have nametags.
Really that's what it boils down to: model regulation. Without regulation, names must appear. With regulation, names can be removed without hurting the game.
