I really want to try this out but I don't want to blind purchase and then not like it. Is there a way to try before you buy with this one?

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Ever saw a MMO offer a free trial a week after it's launch ?

  • blakavarblakavar Member Posts: 304

Nope. The free trials usually dont start for a year, after a MMO is trying a second growth spurt.

So far FE has gotten more players then it expected or dreamed of getting, so a free trial in the near future is probably not going to happen.

To the OP - do like me:

    1. Wait about a month or two for the launch bugs and issues to be resolved.

    2.  During that period, watch this and the official forums and get a feel for the game.  Ignore any "FE is the greatest game eva" or "FE is the greatest fail eva" type posts.

    3.  If you are still interested, take the chance and buy in.

The only way you could is if you know someone who plays it and they were gracious enough to lend you an hour or two on their machine to test it.

I know exactly what you mean though and I was nervous... it may help to ask yourself if you are bone tired of the themepark MMO style of play?

If the answer is yes, then I think FE is really worth a try. I went for it and so far I've been absolutely impressed.

If the answer is no, then you may of course still like FE, even prefer it over the themepark MMOs, but its hard to imagine why it caught your eye at all...

Hope you go for it! If so, come back and tell us what you think. :)

Yes avoid a impulse buy, wait and see attitude is best. It will still be here in a couple months, no rush.

I totally agree but I didn't follow the advice and went ahead and bought it anyway.

Have I regretted buying the game? Nope

Are there annoying bugs in the game? Oh yes but they seem to be working on them quick quickly and fortunately they really haven't detracted me from my gameplay.

Does the game look good? Hmmm well tbh it is no AoC, but it does have a style unto itself, takes a little while to get used to but most would sayd "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and graphics do not make a good game, but they do help.

Is it interesting? So far I've found that I prefer to be in-game than out of it, some would argue it's a sandbox game, some argue it isn't, it's definately got sandbox qualities, such as a classless system and the ability to craft anything in-game, but it also has lvls, I believe the 2 compliment each other quite well as your character build is not dependant on those lvls but on the use of the AP's that you earn via lvls and the extra AP's you earn via quests, this makes the game interesting as there's no clear cut choice what to be.

Is there lots to do? I've been fully entertained with the various quests and faction quests and event quests, I've not ventured too far into the game so PvP is something I've not been able to try out yet, but I'l get there.

If I played WoW would I like this game? No idea but if WoW was your first game your basically screwed becuase your going to compare every single MMO that comes along to the high standards Blizzard imposes on it's products, something that comes from having very deep pockets and a very understanding board of directors who have unlimited faith in their developers. However if your willing to have an open mind and try something off the wall from a small company then perhaps you might enjoy the game, but if your into Phat loot and heroic instances then stay put.

Generally agree with your comments here.

Interesting question you pose at the end there - if I played WoW would I like this game? I don't think enjoying WoW and enjoying FE are necessarily exclusive. I recently tried WoW after a long stint in LOTRO... and though I DO appreciate the polish these games have, the whole themepark mmo thing strikes me as particularly childish and mindless after a couple of nights with FE. Not that there is anything wrong with being a child and I do enjoy those games (you can bet I'll be trying the SW:TOR for example) and loads of adults do.

My point is that Blizzard makes its games for children, colourful, obvious and a lot of hand holding. Having deep pockets helps this for sure. With FE we have a game that is rather more adult, though I am sure a lot of teens will play. For example, the lack of a respec option for where you spend your AP's calls for an adult mind and is something which is going to come under pressure I think, when impulsive people discover they were impulsive. :)

While I am at it... Turbine turned MEO into LOTRO which is more and more a game for children... this is a pity as it was a stunning opportunity for a darker, grittier low fantasy mmo.

So I think the real question is... how old are you? :D

Just kidding, I hope you cave in and buy FE like me and others and join in the initial wave of people, and discover a fantastic game. :)

The observation on my part was for those whose first foray into the murky MMO waters was with WoW and no other MMO.

If your experiences started with Meridian 59 or UO then your more likely to give new MMO's more of a fighting chance as you've grown-up with lower expectations.

WoW broke the mould and rightly so to, they should be appluaded for raising the bar nice and high, but if it was your very first MMO your probably going to be less forgiving of new titles and be expecting something that would be in a similar style to a game that drew you into the genre in the first place.

FE is definately a niche game, but I like to think of it as a bit of a "Sleeper" game, it's got alot of potential under the hood and with careful nurturing this could prove to be a real hit in disguise.

I agree, ever since Age of Conan I stopped doing impulse buys. I'll just see if FE lasts long enough to get a trial up and running.
