I am one of those gamers who likes to own hard copies of their game, thus the boxed copy of FE has reached gamestop today and I am contemplating on givng this one a try. I've been reading forums for the last few weeks and reading about the to be expected bugs, lag, and other MMO-Launch mishaps. I am pretty patient when it comes to a brand new MMO and I like to give the devs a chance to iron out their game and help with the prgression process. (As long as things don't end up like my beloved SWG) i am not really interested in any of these other new MMOs that have just reached the marketplace.
While my favorite MMO of all time is probably FFXI, I am not looking for that type of experience with FE at all.
Being a vet MMO player, I am really looking for something a bit different, yet at the same time gives me the awe of exploration a la Shadowbane and the crafting complexity of original SWG. So I wanted to ask a few questions to those of you who played open beta and those of you who have downloaded the game this past week:
- Do you feel like you are playing a WoW clone? in example, Quest after Quest, linear progression, on rails...
- Does not having the option of choosing an FFA PvP server make the apocalyptic world feel, less apocalyptic?
- Does it seem like the engine and environment could be set up for future player housing or even Faction / Guild Fortifications?
- Do you feel that End Game will head towards the infamous model: Raiding, then more raiding, then some more raiding or do you think that FE could get some what innovative at max level, max AP ?
- Has there been any mention of siege style PvP combat in end game that the devs may bring us? (Shadowbane, AoC) Enforcers against Chota camps etc.
- Is there load times between S1, S2, S3 or is it seamless world?
- I read that there is only one server. While this is the ideal situation for bringing the community together and making us feel more immersed into the world, I can see this having severe lag throughout the growth of the game. Have the devs mentioned they will add more servers eventually?
- Being the old man that I have become, I don't have the massive amounts of time that I once did. I can't really play for 6-7 hours straight these days. Does it seem possible for someone to pick up and play for 1-2 hours and feel their crafting and character progression?
- Last but not least does Fallen Earth feel refreshing, different, somewhat innovative and could it be attractive to the vet MMO player who really needs something new from all these other MMO's that are basically copying one anothers progression model?
I'm sorry if I missed some of this information while reading the forums myself. I just want to make sure my money is well spent and I'm not disappointed. The worst disappointment of my gaming career was when SWG started smoking the pipe. I'm sure alot fo you can relate to that or have a similar story!
Thanks so much!

The last two questions I feel qualified to answer being an old fart myself.
This game is perfect for the casual older gamer. You get that feeling of accomplishment from a couple of hours of play. Especially if you finish out by loading your crafting queue so it works while you are offline.
On top of that you don't really get the sense of urgency to rush to level 45. The game has so many quests and they are very cleaver and fun to read. You'll find yourself taking your time and not worrying about keeping up with the full time gamers.
The game is very innovative. While the developers didn't start from scratch here, they built a game that is an improvement over what has worked before. FE has that feel that the developers built a game they would like to play more than a money making endeavor. They didn't make a game that plays itself however and you have to think and use hand-eye coordination. You've been warned.
Oh and traveling between sectors is seamless as well as entering instances. Nice touch.
Trevor Goodchild - Traveler - Crafing/Pistols
Sapo Loco - Rifle/Melee
Thanks for the info Slam! I'm loving the seamless world integration. Hated zoning in AOC, FFXI. Is Slambone your in-game name?
If anyone else could respond to some of my other questions or concerns that would be great.
•Do you feel like you are playing a WoW clone? in example, Quest after Quest, linear progression, on rails...
Nope def very open with many ways of getting ap and leveling ie scaving xp, crafting xp, wandering around and just shooting stuff.
•Does not having the option of choosing an FFA PvP server make the apocalyptic world feel, less apocalyptic?
I dont think so. The game lore speaks of the tiny human population that has survived, thus the increasing clone population. With so many external threats from the radioactive wastes its logical that the remaining pop will kill each other only as a last resort and only over precious resources.
•Does it seem like the engine and environment could be set up for future player housing or even Faction / Guild Fortifications?
With so much open space and planed 3 sector expansion in a few months this game begs for swg style open housing/cities.
•Do you feel that End Game will head towards the infamous model: Raiding, then more raiding, then some more raiding or do you think that FE could get some what innovative at max level, max AP ?
So far the devs are talking pvp as the end game, but the end max level will be 150, its hard to accurately speculate.
•Has there been any mention of siege style PvP combat in end game that the devs may bring us? (Shadowbane, AoC) Enforcers against Chota camps etc.
Nothing I've heard about.
•Is there load times between S1, S2, S3 or is it seamless world?
Nope first time I hit s2 the only way I even knew was I heard a bird chirp. I even did a region shout in chat about the environmentals being bugged because I never heard birds before. I was laughed at, being the n00b can be embarrassing.
•I read that there is only one server. While this is the ideal situation for bringing the community together and making us feel more immersed into the world, I can see this having severe lag throughout the growth of the game. Have the devs mentioned they will add more servers eventually?
I have heard no more the rumor and hearsay. I'm sure they will. Speculation is the population explosian caught them off guard, they will be scrableing to get additional servers. Who knows though.
•Being the old man that I have become, I don't have the massive amounts of time that I once did. I can't really play for 6-7 hours straight these days. Does it seem possible for someone to pick up and play for 1-2 hours and feel their crafting and character progression?
Absolutely. Run a quest, do a little faction or pvp, scaving, then set yourselft up to craft (offline crafting) and log out.
•Last but not least does Fallen Earth feel refreshing, different, somewhat innovative and could it be attractive to the vet MMO player who really needs something new from all these other MMO's that are basically copying one anothers progression model?
It does for me but experiance is subjective. FE feels very fresh and deep. The stories are fun and interesting not excuses to kill xx of a mob to get to xx of a level.
On the basis of only two evenings of play... and the first was Sunday night so only an hour or so because of the downtime... I'd say;
1. It is NOT a WoW clone... that one is easy. I'm sure there are some players that focus on leveling, and kind of try to treat FE like a WoW clone, but I could feel the game was not designed for that and (for me!) it is tremendously easy to get caught up in the freedom you have to go anywhere, and start working on any skill or craft or attribute or faction or quest or hunt or strategy that might help you gain a foothold in a harsh world. A simple illustration is that in an evening of play with a new character in WoW I would be level 10 (at least) and firmly in that kind of questing frenzy. In FE I had gone from level 2 to level 3... barely. The thing is there was a far more satisfying feeling of progression and immersion.
2-7 are not ones I can really answer to.
8. Absolutely.
9. A resounding yes from me.
Based on playing a total of around 25 hours or so over 3 days, in other words not a lot

From my limited experience
Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! I just went to pick up my copy but apparently the boxed version ships Thursday now..? Well, either way I am definitley going to give it a shot!
Thanks again!
In short I took 6 months off MMO's because I hated the same typical gameplay in almost every new release. FE is the first game in 6 months so I am surprised how much I like it but I do have some gripes but the positives out wheigh the negatives.
To answer your last question the game feels quite different since its twitch FPS with real consequence if you miss etc. Crafting is huge and I love the idea of salvaging wreckage you find in the wild. Still has a load of missions but I guess they need that. I am looking forward to what the game has to offer but right now the quad bike is refreshing since you can get around quite fast.
I am leaving EVE because I can't play 6-7 hours straight. I normally jump on FE for 1-3 hours and I find you can do a lot in that time.
started a blog which may help also.
About end game...there is no end game. They plan on releasing new zones on a 3 month? time table. When you hit max level you'll find there really is very little to do. You can grind faction (doing repeatable quests, snore), harvest, craft, or PvP.
You will find very little reason to group, let alone "Raid". The best materials are in PvP zones though, so there will probably need to be some planned effort in order to get crafters supplied.

The server size is limited, I just don't recall to what size (probably 10k)

I found the game to be sufficiently different to be entertaining to people burnt out on the standard fare. There are great possibilities for roleplayers and a bevy of emotes to entertain yourself when you aren't scaving.
Hey Chryses, could you post the link to your blog? Would love to follow it.
Apparently the game is shipping tomorrow, Thursday Oct. 1st and will be on store shelves Friday, the 2nd. Not sure why this wasn't in stores on Tuesday like it was supposed to.
