Lineage would be the worst place to start.
Since you noted Starcraft, you might like World of Warcraft, since for some strange reason which ill never understand almost everyone does. Or if you like Diablo, you may like Ultima Online, there are boxsets available with all the expansions, I thin kfor pretty cheap too.
Actually, if you like Diablo, World of Warcraft would also be a good idea. I'd like to suggest Asheron's Call 2 in this department, except that game is all but dead, and they're STILL trying to iron the bugs out after two years, not to mention add features that should've been added on launch.
Another good game is City of Heroes. The battles have more "action" to them than other MMOs, and you tend to fight a whole bunch of enemies at once, just like in Diablo. It may get a tad boring after a few months, but if you enjoy it, you may pick it back up again every now and again.
Anarchy Online is a pretty good game, and even though the graphics are somewhat dated, they still look decent - the game also runs well seeing as how the graphics aren't top-notch. It's a little complicated, though. Check out their website (www.anarchyonline.com) you can play free for an entire year if you sign up before January 15th. Worth a shot.
Don't play Ultima Online. It's old and crappy, and... well... archaic. I enjoyed Star Wars Galaxies for the short period I played it, but I've heard way too many complaints about how the game has become to trust playing it again. Whatever you do, just stay away from Final Fantasy XI. It's a terrible game.
How does Ultima being old have anything to do with the gameplay? Apparently 250k subscribers would say differently. Ultima Online is the most open ended MMORPG on the market, period. And most people really like it or at least used to.
ok ill try some im playing that eternal lands game and its desent i guess
its still working in updating thigns but its good for now
also i never liked final fantisy i played like 30 mins of it im not sure which one but dam movie thing took 25 minutes
and besides the final fantisy games are like porn games basically lol
yeah ill try some
ive played diablo2 and starcraft
ill try the play for a year for free game also
let me be the first to say....WTF?
Try World of Warcraft, its the best MMORPG to start with.
Its new, it have great customer support, and it don't take long to get from lowbie status to medium player.
In Lineage2 it would take you many months or even more to become a medium player.

If your not sure about lineage II or not I would suggest googling around. There some err.."trial" servers. Where you can download a "trial" for the game and play for awhile. Ofcourse, if you like the game, buy it and play on the non "trial" servers.

Show a little more respect for Ultima Online
Without UO, there would be no such thing as World of Walt Disney...erm I meant World of Warcraft
I do agree on the FFXI thing, though

Hmm well commanding an army and first person shooters are not features of a mmorpg .
So really hard to judge what type of mmorpg is right for you.
Closest to a first person shooter in a MMO form is planetside and WW2 online.
Games like neocron has some features of a FPS but really if you want a first person shooter in a massive scale then planetside is your best bet.
This are basically MMOFPS not MMORPG .Planetside is much more fast pace then WW2 online.
So if you want a first person shooter then i say planetside.
Aye, I played some planetside and if you're looking for a MMOFPS (by lack of a better word), it might be your best bet.
It's pretty, it's got nice ideas (especially with the Goldorak-like mechs that were going to be (or are) inserted in the game). the action is fast and it's not so bad dying since you respawn close to the action (sometimes a littel too close even ), not to mention that your experience points are used to buy certificates which allow you to use certain armour/weapons/vehicles.
I found the downside to be that it's more of a game that you play now and then for an hour, but that it gets a bit boring if you play it too often. But then again, I'm not really that much in FPS-games, so that might influence me

Sorry guys, but UO sucks. Being a "Classic" and "Open-ended" doesn't necessarily mean it's a good game, nor does having a ton of subscribers. If MMORPGs (especially EQ and FF11) have taught me anything, it's that many players will continue playing a game out of sheer loyalty. Perhaps it's because the game was their first of the genre, so it always holds a warm spot in their hearts, or perhaps certain aspects of the game appeal to them and cause them to ignore all of the negatives.
Oh, and UO wasn't the first MMORPG out there, so don't say "WITHOUT UO YOU WOULDN'T HAVE WHAT YOU HAVE TO DAY" like some guy here said. If UO wasn't around, there'd have been another MMORPG to take its place. I'm sure Everquest would have still come out (considering the gameplay wasn't even remotely inspired by UO's) along with the many other games attempting to clone and improve upon it.
I'm not going to go recommending a terrible game to this new guy here just because many people on the boards here are still in denial over their archaic game.
When I said before that the game is "old," I didn't just mean it's been around for a while, I mean it LOOKS and PLAYS like something really old, as well.
First good MMORPG was Lineage I, released in `90 or `91.
This 15 years old game still have like 1 milion subscribers.
The only one capable to break this record its World of Warcraft, we shall see.

Which FF Character Are You?

Lineage is reigning at number 1 with somewhere between 2.25 and 2.5 million subscribers.
The next highest being Lineage 2 with 1.5 million.
Then final fantasy XI with just over 500,000.

If you like Diablo I would recommend Guild Wars when it is released. Ive participated in 2 of the beta events and really liked it and best part of it all with it is its gonna be free to play just gotta pay 50 bucks to buy the game. also I have played UO for like a week but I did not like the game at all since its just too boring to me but that is just my opinion. I would recommend reading up on the games. Also WoW is nowhere near the grounds of being compared with Starcraft since in my honest opinion Starcraft got boring fast and is not deep enough with storyline.
Oh what was the first MMorpg then?
I hope you're not gonna say Multi User Dungeons cos if those are Mmorpgs I'm the sultan of Kashmir...
Now really, it seems like you don't like UO, or don't understand how it plays, but UO is still a good game
I think you're just too spoiled by games with flashy nice graphics.
I'm not gonna say there would not have been any other Mmorpgs without UO, but UO was the foundation ( Origin systems and their Ultima system were even at the base of any computer RPG.)
