SWTOR Beta Sign Up: solution and tips

(edit) :

  • Official troubleshooting thread here
  • To check if your application has been completed  visit http://www.swtor.com/tester youn should see the following message:

Congratulations, you have completed the sign up process to test Star Wars: The Old Republic. Click below if you wish to update your information

 ----------------------------------------------

As a try to help people having issues with the registration process:

=> It works on IE8 <=

1) be sure you have the latest version of Java (Can be downloaded here ), restart your PC after installation

2) Open IE, activate the compability mode (small icon top right, between the address bar and the green refresh button) Eventually delete your cookies (didn't need it though)

3) Go to www.swtor.com , click on "My account", scroll down click "Yes, I would like to be considered for testing." Save.

4) On the registration page, read and if you agree, accept the terms.

5) Fill in your personal infos

6) If your are sent back to the agreement page redo the process but don't fill in your phone number (can be edited later on)

7) You are sent to a scan page, accept the scan and accept the installation of the small plugin at the top of the screen.

Note: you might get stuck here. If the system can't install the plugin, close IE, get back to your account (in compatibility mode) and scroll down to the Scan button. It was tricky for me needed a few try.

If the plugin was installed but you can't submit, hit TAB to force scroll the scan window to the submit key.

If you are caught in the loop, just keep doing it eventually its your turn to get through.

8) Eventually your are done, go back to your account and check at the bottom, it should look like.

(checked) Yes, I would like to be considered for testing.

System Specifications: [Complete]

Contact Info: [Complete]

You can update your phone number now if you had issues earlier on. (I used numbers without spaces like XXXXXXXXXX)

May the force be with you.

I feel I owe an apology here. I just tried the signup page today and I can indeed see it now. I haven't had my morning coffee :D

Great post Deewe! Thanks for all the links and info!

Another way to get around the IE issues is to just install Firefox for it. Every time I got to the SCAN page, IE hung and required a restart (IE, not PC). Tried same link with Firefox and no issue at all.

Thanks for the tips.  Updated JAVA and it finally worked for me.

Define Irony. A bunch of people who want to test software in a limited QA capacity who don't understand how to use their own computer.

Yeah, because all us IT guys know what an obvious trouble shooting step it is to leave the phone number field in an on-line form blank and then come back and edit it in after you're all done.

    /sarcasm off

LOL, while I kinda agree, it's not "exactly" the same thing...apples and oranges mate. Finding, duplicating and reporting bugs in a video game isn't exactly the same as trying to resolve operating system errors. Windows/IE are boring necessities that very few care about...ToR is a source of entertainment.

Sorta like how I don't know how my car CD player works...I just know when I pop in a CD, it "goes", and that's how the majority of the people will be. What Bioware needs is people who will take the time to look at the CD, check for scratches and jams before saying their CD player doesn't work.

QFT! Besides it is not like you can check the forums over there now if you are having problems (Since the boards are down).

I was surprised they elected to use a java browser app instead of just accepting uploads of a dxdiag file

Considering you can edit a DXdiag file...

Damn it, that beta participating system is just ridiculous. No matter what I do, I'm just stuck in a loop for entering personal data, then agreeing to the terms, then entering personal data again and so on...

    Fking amateurs.

  • tamgrostamgros Member Posts: 88

Thanks for this. I wasn't sure what was going on.

Not sure how enthused I am to beta test this one. Seems to be all about the story, the beta might just be more of a spoiler than a preview. I think I'd much rather beta test STO. The actual gameplay looks better over there anyway :)

I would also like to thank the OP. Updating JAVA and restarting were essential.

Glad I could help, see you in beta :D

    @OP

It's not beta signups, it's pre-beta game testing.

Closed and open beta won't be for a while.

You are correct, I will re-word what I stated. Tell me if this fits in your case....

Define Irony- A self proclaimed IT professional wanting to test software in a limited QA capacity who does not know how to utilize troubleshooting skills?

I was finally able to sign up. Do NOT use IE 64 bit. It won't work. You need to use IE 32 bit. And no other browser will work either. You also have to activate compatibility mode and make sure your flash player is up to date.

  • StalkerUKCGStalkerUKCG Member Posts: 5

I used firefox with updated java and it worked fine first time, saying no other browser will work is a over statement. did you go out and test all other browsers ? even if you did  i can confirm firefox works

  • Tester003Tester003 Member UncommonPosts: 58

This is their first test and they fail.  Many other programs do not make you use java and activex to sign up.   Get a better website maker this is not good coding and very ant-user get a clue :-(

Stop drinking the java/flash/activex dope.  If this is how you allow your team to code web page not so sure i even want to allow your program code on my computer.

took me only two tries to finish it, but then again I was already signed up for the newsletters on their website so I didn't need to do any real updates.

Hmm saw this thread. Went to website site. Signed up, verified email address. Done. No problems at all. But then i use Firefox 3.5 and not Internet Exploder. :D

did you also do the system scan?? i think thats where most peoples problem comes from (including mine).. not the signing up...

  • Nov8trNov8tr Member UncommonPosts: 107

Yeah I did the scan. Completed the whole process. Email verified. Confirmation email sent to me saying I had completed the process, thank me, etc, etc. So yeah guess I got lucky first time out. But I keep all hardware and software updated daily. I use Firefox 3.5 on Windows 7. Did I mention I'm a 56 yr old retired network engineer with 39 yrs in computers with 3 degrees? lol.
