Would this game have been the Marvel Universe Online to rival other MMO competitors that everyone anticipated?
One thing Cryptic did right was create a great MMO by releasing CoH then following up with CoV. Why couldn't they just let it go and move on if they were trying to make a new Super Hero game? Why so much of the similarities?
Yes, I paid the $50 and was expecting something different and something new. It's obvious I can't get my money back so the only thing I can do is write a review about it. I am not saying not to try it or play it. I am just saying all I see is a "polished up" version of CoH that folks were looking for when COH was originally released. This game should have been CoH2 or a New Expansion to their previous creation.
Props on the New Engine they are using and various of powers people can use. The character customization is top notch. Though, it still falls short with the same style of game and originality.
I am not a big SoE fan but I have this feeling working with Jim Lee they may finally have a unique concept behind wearing a cap and mask that Cryptic failed to do. It seems like Cryptic played it safe and they stuck with what they already knew,... feed backs from players on another game.

Well, Jim Lee will be tough competition..
I also feel that Cryptic should have tried to make a very different game experience instead of trying to do the same but a bit better. There are many fun things they could have added to the genre.
I think that is the reason Marvel got cold feets, now there is 2 games competing for exactly the same players and superheroes isn't the biggest genre.
Of course they might change and better the game a lot in time, but I just think they should have tried harder to make something more different. DCU is going for that so I think they have bigger chanse to become big (or fail miserably of course but if you don't take a chanse you will never win).
Agree and kudos to those who take chances, but I am one of those who bought a lifetime account for CO "on impulse" (a bad habit, I know, I was just suckered into Aion, as well, a subscription I already canceled) and yet I couldn't play CO longer than a few days. I am now back to COH rebuilding a brand new character there simply because I find the gameplay on COH much more satisfying (on a sidenote, I stay well away from the "architect" stuff). I even prefer COH's graphics (just a personal matter, I know, the art direction in games is a love or hate thing).
I am very disapointed as well. I used to play CoH and i thought CO would be a lot superior and its not. As a matter of fact i didnt like CO's graphics very much neither the gameplay. Its not a bad game but i think I was expecting a lot more from Cryptics for a new game.
I think that CO has the potential to be a very good game. It just needs a lot of work.
Fix the powers, make them deeper and make is so the higher tier powers are better. Differentiate the frameworks more and make the top tier only available to a primary framework.
Add more mods to the powers without overriding the top tier powers.
Balance powers that have buildups better against clickable powers
Anyway enough on powers
Add missions like CoH in addition to the world quests and stuff.
Expand and diversify the instances. Like in MI the citizen quests should be more varied instances. In desert there should maybe be contacts you can get missions from that are instances. In other words keep the good stuff in CoH but add to it with a more open world and world quests.
Get rid of all instances in instances. Dr Destroyer might be good if it didn't have 5 mini instances.
Enhance the roles within builds a bit and add more role oriented powers to help further diversify game play.
Add a lot more content.
Have solo, group, raid content at the end game that is meaningful and keeps you going.
Add something more interesting to spend perk points on.
I think they really have the right stuff and the right ideas. It just needs more content and polish. The only thing I'd have an exception to is the powers. I almost think the powers need to be scrapped and redone but at this stage that isn't gonna happen. I think that CoH actually has better powers and with the next update it looks like it might have all the flexibility of CO and more.

I agree its not a bad game, it has potential just needs A LOT of changes and fixes. But still it will never be not even close to what i was expecting. Too bad, i guess i m gonna have to wait until Star Wars the Old Republic is released to see i find a new game to stick with besides EVE. Not giving Aion a try because i am really tired of fantasy MMO's and i pretty sure its not gonna be much diferent from what we already have out there.
I said its not bad? It is Bad! Very very bad at this moment. The more i play the less i like it.
Dos it feel like heavy for you? My computer can run it no problem its just it feels, maybe the engine, heavier than AoC for me.
I originally wasnt going to play this game as I was going to sit out and wait for DCUO. I've been playing COH since launch and have tried other MMO's only to find myself back in COH. I gave this game a try based on a friends reccomendation. I found this game to be very COH-like. Even down to the point having you able to choose the keyboard layout from COH.
I found the character creator to be very clunky. It doesnt seem to have more choices than COH.
The tutorial is excurciatingly long. Really another alien invasion???? COH is built around a massive alien invasion and the first thing you do in your tutorial is have an alien invasion.
The one thing that CO had over COH is concept. COH earth has one city populated by thousands of superheroes and crime still occurs. CO manages to spread their heroes out. DCUO has the advantage to this in that their world is already populated by heroes so its not really upsetting the balance.
All in all its an ok game but I already sub COH there is no need for me to sub CO
First, I'm a little confused by the thread title. You could call it "a spiritual successor" to CoX given its ties (one of the leads, Jack Emerett stayed with Cryptic after the sale of CoX and because it appears to share the same engine code-base).
Second, I think this was basically the game they were making for Marvel before they quit. I was a late round beta tester but considering so many people commented that the game made leaps in bounds in only the last few months before release, I could see why Marvel decided to bail so long ago, considering the progress made and the similiarities.
Third, speaking of similiarities, there really are so many because the games share essentially the same code base. Sure, they've branched off and evolved since the sale but its obvious from the UI that they are related. To refine your comment, CO is really a more polised up version of CoH's alpha, using both offensive and defensive postures as well as the open skill system. For a bit of CoH history, here are two vids:
E3 demo (9 minutes long, 6 minute mark shows brief view of character creator): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7955288179473064409#2002
Alpha video (shot of poeer selection): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n76fw8HIyw8
As for why this wasn't CoH 2, I think that was because of the relationship with NCsoft as well as potential legal and marketing obstacles.
