A Great MMORPG?

MagicalFishyMagicalFishy Member Posts: 4

 Yo.

Guys, I'm a big MMORPG fan. Unfortunately, I don't find a lot of MMORPGs to be that good. A lot of them are extremely repetitive, and seem too similar too each other to be any fun. Furthermore, the more MMORPGs I play, the more they seem to mold and mush into one another.

Recently, though, I found an absolutely amazing MMO. It's called 'Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine'. I mean, it was fantastic. Your character's stats and skills were fully customizable (if I wanted caster stats with melee skills, I could have it) — and the way one's skills increased were unique, and had little to do with what level you were. You could capture demons, merge demons together, etc. The combat system was relatively new. The quests were well done, and even had cutscenes. Smooth, good-looking graphics. On, and on.

I'm not sure if I can truly depict how great the game is to anyone who hasn't played it. I think I liked it so much because it was different.

Unfortunately, that all ended at Level 20. For some reason, everything goes steeply downhill. The experience scale skyrockets to an unreasonable extent, every area but the starting area is scarcely populated with any monsters—thus, scarcely populated with any people. The few monsters you do find are either really easy to kill or really difficult, and they only give about .1% exp., anyway. There are no quests anywhere.

I mean, the game takes a totally unexpected, sharp turn for stupidity. The only reasonable means of leveling from Level 20 - 93 is to grind the same dungeon over, and over, and over, and over. 90% of the population stands in the entrance to one dungeon looking for parties. The rest of the game-world is pretty unused; barren. To an MMO fan, a gamer, and someone who actually got excited about finding a new, good game—this was extremely disappointing.

Now, the point of all this. . .

Does anyone have any good MMORPG suggestions? WoW sucks, I've played everything from Mu Online to Rakion to S4 League to Flyff to Fiesta—but this game really took the cake (until Level 20). Do any of you know of any good MMOs; ones that are different, and have a lot of substance to them?

In my opinion, Mabinogi is one of the best MMO out there and in Asia, it's a huge game. Here, people have a hard tiem with the graphics and I can understand why lol.

However, it's a great MMO with amazing quests and storyline. You actually have in-game cutscenes in dungeons and quests.

Do what I do, check the game list on this forum and scroll through.  Give some of the F2P games a try some are pretty good others are grindfests.  Check the reviews and if they're like 8 or higher download the trials and give the game a try.

I gave warhammer a try few months ago.  I enjoyed my experience playing.  Tried out various classes and found some were much stronger then others.  It didn't take long to level and the public quest system was very well done.  You can get into pvp early on and it can be fun.  I didn't continue to play once the trial ran out.  I find if you read the actualy game forums it can turn you off from all the whiners complaining about balance and such.  You have so many different class options to try out and in each area different content to try.  I played mostly orcs and dark elves and found the experience enjoyable and wonder if I might get a subscription.

You can get EQ2 pretty cheap in bargain bins and it usually offers a 30 day subscription.  If you play alot that 30 days should get you up around 30 possibly 40th level.  Theres a ton of content to experience and expansions.  I wouldn't recommend trying Pvp servers as a newbie through it will totally turn you off.

As for F2P I tried Requiem.  It sorta reminded me of guildwars.  After getting a few levels it seemed to become a grindfest and turned me off.

To have the first part of the game great and then turn into a boring grind game is unfortunatley not something new.

Usually they either do this to lure in new gamers or because they started with the early zones and then either got lazy or short on cash and decided to just make the rest of the game as fast as they could.

Can't reccomend many other games that don't have that thing, Guildwars is worth a try if you havn't played it.

     Thanks for your responses, guys.

I've played EVE, and actually really liked it—unfortunately, I have no money. My trial time has long expired, haha. Mabinogi actually looks pretty fun (and, from what I'm reading, it's exactly what I'm looking for; I'm downloading the client now.

It is unfortunate that a lot of MMORPGs start off really good, just to suck in the player, but I really hadn't thought that was the case with this game. As many MMOs as I've played, I guess this one genuinely tricked me.

Warhammer looked fun. The reason I never got into it, though (don't shoot me) is because, at the time, I was playing WoW.

     Hm.

I don't much like playing on the Asian-market. I find one of the funnest parts of MMOs is the interaction; a lot of MMOs I play just wouldn't seem as fun if there weren't other people.

I would say give FFXI a try if you havn't. It takes a little to get into it, but once your hooked get ready for the ride of your life.

I havn't play'd in a year or 2 (got so hooked I couldn't really function with life) but when I was playing it was pretty populated. Not sure how it is now days.

FFXIV is coming out next spring/ish so keep your eyes on that.

Please check out my channel. I do gaming reviews, gaming related reviews & lets plays. Thanks!

I tried FFXI and hated it.  Very slow to level.  All items look the same.  You get a tunic at level 5 that looks the same as the much better tunic at level 20.  All the classes look identical theres nothing really to distinguish yourself.  After 30 you will have a very hard time soloing.  Graphics look like playstation era.

Warhammer is nothing like wow, in fact warhammer was out long before WOW.  Warhammer is similar to DAOC in RVR concept and factions.  The only similarity between the two would be having similar races.  I think you can get the game for 10 bucks at EBgames and get some free time to play.  I played the trial til it was up and got a few classes to 20ish in that time.  Then created another trial account and tried a different class.  The graphics remind me more of guildwars in concept the WOWish, they're not too cartoony except for the greenskins.
