Well, given, what I think is, exciting news about Cataclysm I decided to come back to WOW after almost a year out. I have 3 deathknights now but never got my first one above 63 as I could nat face going through Outland again my main lvl 80 in Northrend - plus a whole bunch of mid 20 toons across servers.

I have toons on The Sha'tar, Steamwheel, Dragonblight (EU) and Chamber of aspects and I am loving coming back.

The best thing, and also the most daunting, is that I have almost forgotten everything I used to know about the gear, etc - too many other MMO's in the last year have faded my memory. Going to be fun getting up to speed but I feel like a newbiw again.

See you all in game as I start the search for a good guild....

No seriously, I dont get why people find it so addictive, i play eve now and i will admit, despite my hate for it now, the game was once fun, RP a bit here and there, Raiding others cities, Farming your goods, settling in a Settlement and then more RP and you traded for items, It was fun, but eventually all of those Raids in Dungeons and Farming sessions get boring, i eventually just said

"I am not playing this game anymore, it's boring."

And do you see me having effects similiar to a Crack-Addicts?

    No.

Because i actually have will power, I bet WoW players only play the game because it has a jump button, otherwise it's like alot of other MMO's lol...

Yes its all about a lack of willpower...please.

Its because I like the game and damn well enjoy it. For you info, I have also played Eve since launch and Eq2, Aion beta, CO, DAOC, and a host of others.

I have this nasty habit of playing games I like and leaving / coming back as it suits me.....what a crime. MMO companies must hate me.

I think I have more willpower than forum posters who cant resist the urge to post a negative anytime they see a positive wow reference..

I think WoW's appeal is that it's actually several games in one.  For some it's a casual quester, for others PvP centric, for others endgame raid centric.  Its got something for (almost) everyone from 8 year old just figuring out how fun it is to swear in chat, to the "MMO Marine" (ya know the type) who treats every effort with the greatest of seriousness.

What's funny, and I have no reason why this is...  the people who love WoW really love it.  Those who don't love WoW tend to be quite hostile toward it.  For example, other than the SOE haters, who goes out of their way to bash EQ2?  But the WoW haters?  They seem to be everywhere.  I think that's almost a political thing.  Everyone either loved or hated President  (pick one).  Is WoW Bashing related to President Bashing?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, "will power", blah, blah, blah.

You quit because you got bored, end of story. Will power has nothing to do with avoiding something that you no longer find entertaining. Now, if you still enjoyed it but forced yourself to quit...that would be will power.

I played Eve Online for a while and thought it was cool at first. But then I got tired of it because I disliked feeling so far away from things. I like having control of my character and the like, that's just my gaming style. So I quit and picked up WoW. I wouldn't call that "will power" so much as "gamer getting bored and going somewhere else". And it's not such a phenomenon that you get bored, quit for a while, try other things and realize that you don't like them as much. Nor is it a bad thing for people to get bored. For God's sakes, what happened to common sense? This happens with everything, use your heads. You watch a TV show for a few years...then they yank it because it's had its run. You might continue watching it for a while afterwards but then lookit! A bright, new shiny TV show coming out! And suddenly, you forget all about T V show A and jump on TV show B. Doesn't mean you won't ever watch TV show A again.

And by the way, it's not the only game with a jump button. And if that was meant to be amusing in a sarcastic way, you have failed. ;)

I really don't want to get into it too much but I have to say this. You claim this guy has no will power.  But honestly.  If that's true, you also haven't displayed much willpower. You've just jumped from one MMO to another. Which isn't much different from someone playing World of Warcraft for a season, giving up for another season and then coming back. Now, I totally get that hating on World of Warcraft is fashionable in the online community. But please, to bash another person because he's looking forward to his next few months in World of Warcraft is just stupid. Period.

To me it more resembles any popular culture out there. Compare it to a movie like Titanic - though it was obviously a gigantic success you had the rabid haters proclaiming their hate, should we say, very actively. Pop music the same - Michael Jackson, Britney Spears anyone?

Though I don't understand it, it seems very human to want to bash popular things. It's probably a way of proclaiming being unique, maybe a fear of not being it.

I've left WoW myself as it didn't deliver what I was looking for anymore. However, should Blizzard truly come up with something unique for WoW I'd still evaluate that on equal terms with other games and be where the most fun (for me) is.

This is the truth about people not being able to stay away from WoW.  It has nothing to do with being addicted to the game itself, or it being the best/worst game ever made.  People are simply restless...

I can't even measure how long most MMO players have been waiting for a new hit now.  Every game since WoW has completely flopped.  Be it through horrible developers, poor/stiff combat, lack of PvE/PvP balance, or what ever else, all have failed to keep anyone interested for more than a few months.

People get a craving for some good online play, but there's really nowhere to go but back to WoW.  I've been there, and I'm sure most people have at some point quit and gone to it out of sheer boredom.

WAR, Vanguard, AoC, Darkfall, etc., the list keeps growing with pathetic, undeveloped failures.  Only time will tell how Aion works out in the long run.  But even in success, it's already not appealing to many people... and those people will probably end up back in WoW once they feel the desire for some MMO gameplay/community(even one as bad as WoW's is).

You can see it, with every single MMO release, people get anxious and hopeful it'll be the "next" sustainably enjoyable MMO.  Of course, after it falters, you are right back to where you started... waiting and restless, and thinking to yourself... maybe going back to WoW won't be so bad after all, at least for a while.

So you are saying that all wow players are addicts?

First generalizing is obviously a huge failure on your part, no two people are identical.

Second, you should  get off your high horse, you are on an MMO website as well I might remind you who your audience is...

Third and finally, tooting your own horn saying "I have willpower look at me"  what does this get you?  Where does it leave you?

Gets you nothing, leaves you no where.  Seems to me you are trying to convince yourself.

You are correct there, although I am coming back for a bit I know I will be bored with it in a month or two and probably cancel. Its just been a year and i'm so tired and bored of waiting for something =/

I do have fun when I play it though, it isn't all because of the waiting around for something new, the fun just dies out after I level cap and I find myself standing in dalaran for a week then cancelling D:

The thing about Cataclysm, if it's mostly a revamp of the old world and not the expansion areas, is that if you get to 80 before it comes out, then haven't you defeated the point of being able to enjoy Calaclysm?

There are reportedly 7 new level 80-85 zones.

So no, it wouldn't be pointless, besides almost everyone I know is going to reroll one of the new races for fun at least leveling an alt.

Hits the nail on the head. I've felt this way since becoming bored of WoW. The temptation to play it again for a bit has resurfaced during the boredom of waiting for something new, but I have resisted. With no MMO to indulge in, I've been playing a lot of single player games instead. They just don't have the same epic feeling as an MMO, though.

It's a great game period, it just sucks when you become one of those gamers that plays it for over 5 hours a day straight for months on end....and then it doesn't matter how good a game is you'll get sick of it and even turn into a hater.

Honestly, why do you think there are so many WoW haters to begin with...hmmm

Things that make you go HMMMMM:

Yea, I resubed cause the other games on the market are so.....[FILL IN THE BLANK]. I started a new toon on a different server and I agree, I forgot a lot of the beggining. Met some new people, new challenges and a diifferent way of playing.

But will power???? I dont know, more like...the other games such as [FILL IN THE BLANK] certainly are not able to hold m;y attention. When something better comes around I am sure I "get addicted" to it also. GO FIGURE.

Perhaps the real reason why people keep returning to WoW is that the rest of the market is pretty sad in comparison?

It is the same thing with single player RPGs for example.  People keep playing the same old game over and over until something new and exciting is released that is fun enough to takes its place.  That just hasn't happened in the mmo market for the last 5 years.

Think about it this way.  Even people who are completely burned out of wow more often than not will return to wow over most games on the market right now.  It is a pretty sad market when the competition cannot even entice disillusioned players to their games.

I bet you more people cancel their wow account every month than most games have total popualtion, so what is preventing them from capitalizing on those potential customers?

The biggest problem i have with WoW is that it looks like the game i played and enjoyed at the start but so much has changed to make it more attractive to the casual player and its become endgame centric that the fun factor is nt there anymore . I ll have a look at the cataclysm but i m quite sceptical as to it dealing with any of the real issues that led me to give up WoW .

This is exactly how I feel, and I will tell you why.

WoW was designed and created by people who quit Blizzard for reasons of them becoming the company of greedy jerks that we all know now. These are the people who made Guild Wars and Hellgate: London. They are the people that worked on the RTS games and Diablo. They are the geniuses that made Blizzard popular and well-loved enough that it had the success that it did. This is why WoW was so amazing at release and gradually has become worse and worse. The people that designed the game are not the ones updating it now.

We can weep for Blizzard, but we can never have them back.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true — you know it, and they know it." —Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

    WTF? No subscription fee?
