I'm recording it of course, but the trailers make it look like they are trying to go for a whole new audience. Doesn't that usually end with the show losing half its current viewers(Previous SG fans) and picking up less than they normally would?

I like the dark hopless twist, but I want a little more cornball and a lot less soap in my Stargate.

Done watching the premier.. I must say not very excited about this.. This reminds me a lot like stargate atlantis opening episode, but with poor actors thrown in..

"o o we are in trouble" "we have very little time" "let's go through the stargate to seek for help"

That was fine back then, but I FEEL THE LOOP IS starting again.

Wasn't this supposed to be much darker theme stargate series? Don't see how thats going to work when you have fattys like Eli playing the "funny cute guy".. I hope he dies soon! He could eat somekind of alien muffin and turn into a giant wraith or something then they would have to kill him! That would be more funny than he can ever be!

I don't know this is a dissapointment so far. This is not different at all.

I boycotted "SyFy" for their dumbass name change.  Clear evidence that someone that doesn't get it has too much creative control.

Its Star Trek Voyager, Meets Stargate, Meets Galactica, Meets Sliders.

Star Trek Voyager: Ship lost out in Bumfuck Egypt all alone with no way home.

    Stargate: Duh :P

Galactica: Crew is the main focus, ship is Dieing

Sliders: We have 12 hours to get back before the "Wormhole" Wont let us go back to the ship...

Ah well still like it sofar.

I can't believe they didn't make eli a change of clothes and get something of a haircut.   I mean you're gonna escort a someone accross the universe you'd think you'd spend another $50 to be presentable.    "gamer freak" tees are not allowed at the officers table.

    _____

aside from that they set up the plot, and I even got a nice laugh with the first planet being a desert.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

One thing I noticed is that they are taking off a spin from LOST with....  Dr. Rush = John Locke... (meaning cant tell what his motives are yet, maybe others noticed) .It doesnt have the Charisma, I guess you could say that the other Stargate shows have though with its list of characters, time will tell I guess.

Oh, well I didn't watch it all the way through.  I'll maybe give it a chance to see if a chemistry develops.

I watched SGU yesterday and I got the distinct impression that they took ideas from multiple sci-fi shows:

    1) Battle Star Galactica 2004-2009. You can tell the camera style and character driven drama has the same feel as BSG. This is a good thing. Also, the sex scene in the closet had BSG written all over it LOL. You can tell there will be more relationship drama between that guy and the girl who's father died. This will be good as I enjoyed the relationship drama in BSG. I'm glad they are taking this element into the new Stargate series.

    2) Star Trek Voyager - the concept of a "lost in space" ship trying to get home has been done before with Voyager. Voyager didn't have as good a fan base as the other Trek shows but this show was successful and was not canceled. It seems like with a huge universe out there they would come up with something new but maybe they are trying to stick with something that works - something we can relate to.

    3) Original Star Trek - A new planet every week. It appears that the ship in SGU is a robot ship which travels to habitable planets around the universe in order to deposit star gates. The crew is allowed to ring down to these planets but for only 12 hours until the robot ship goes back to traveling. So they will basically be forced to visit a new planet each week most likely. I like this and I hope they will come up with some good and original writing on each world visited. One thing that could be negative is if they repeat the same old "no tech" humanoid worlds that we have seen on almost 100% of the SG Atlantis worlds. Give this a rest please. I'm tired of going to new worlds and seeing poor village humans who speak english. Be more creative and it will work!

My first impression of Stargate Atlantis after this first episode was "Epic Phail" and sure enough the series was canceled. I'm glad they did not create yet another "super villain" to be conquered like the Wraith which was nothing but a high tech vampire. SG1 Season 10 - the Ori was yet another super villain they had to pull out of their butts because the Goa'uld were defeated. I'm glad they did not repeat these mistakes with SGU so far.

My first impression with SGU is that it will be successful as long as the writing is good and creative. The acting wasn't bad and I believe they will improve over time (1st season acting isn't that great anyway until the actors get some chemistry with each other). So I wish Stargate Universe success. It will do well as long as they give us something new and not re-hash stuff they did before.

First thay said the ship was fallowing the course send back by the Other ships out ahead scouting planets and building Stargates.

Second I rember there beeing 12+ Galaxys that it went through Before it made it there... How many Fracking gates could there be? If it was two or three ships Not many perhaps. But if Stargate has shown us anything to do with the Ancients its that they dont do Anything small or half-assed... There might be a hundred million by now.. This series has so mutch room to grow its retarted.

And I seem to recall that there are no plans for any alien threats for the first season I think... Hope they pull this off.

Bottom line is this will Either be the best or Worst Stargate series so far. I just hope there isent a "Wormhole Drive" ending to the series that gets them home like in Voyager or Atlantas... If it must Die let it Die with them still lost in Bumfrack Egipt.

Yeah, all those galaxies it went through is pretty amazing. I'm not sure how they are going to technically explain the interstellar travel abilities of that ship. I hope they don't do the "omg we have no more Zero Point Modules left!" like they did in Atlantis. Good point about Voyager but Voyager was a science vessel and it used any scientific means possible to get back home. They used a Borg transwarp conduit to get back to earth then collapsed it on the enemy. But you are right, I hope they come up with something more interesting to get back to earth since they obviously can't traverse back or gate back.

Rember they said it might have been in space for a 100K years.. If thats the case I would be supprised if they had a ZPM on board. Hope not anyways :P

I got a feeling it will be something Stranger that will put the crew in danger. But just a warning they were makeing a big deal in the Preview about not haveing power so...

    So far pretty entertaining.

With almost any of the StarTrek or StarGate series the new spinnoffs never caught me straight away in the sense the orginals did, it always took time for those series to settle, get to know the characters, so can't say much about the first pilot just yet other then it is entertaining enough to keep watching as I have only seen 1/4 so far from the pilot.

Do agree that they seem to take about every other sci fi serie script and mold it into SGU.

Besides that, I love Sci-Fi movies/series, especialy futuristic/space, and there is too little of that on tv, atleast not many newer productions, so am glad atleast there is something new again, wondering what the new V <(link to trailer) will be like.

One of the main characters from Lost will be on V.   She's an awesome actress.   It should be interesting to see the new version of V.

As for SG:U...ugh...so many cliche's and only two people that really stand out on the show at all.  The rest are just blah.   I felt I was watching a show that was a smattering of BSG/SG-1/Star Trek all rolled into one.   Nothing really grabbed me.    The show is going to be so predictable that a child could have written it.    This is what happens when a story has long since come to an end and it needs to be left sleeping.

Firefly was at least some what original and took us in a new direction.

Not to bang my own drums, but even my story I wrote years ago would be better than SG:U.

The episode felt rush, and it seemed more like (as everyone else has said) a collection of past sci-fi shows, but I hope they play into the "do we stay on this planet or keep going" angle that was hinted at in the preview for the season. I'd like to see the crew actually consider staying, maybe some people leaving to stay on the planet, and not run back to the ship just because they discovered something was actually wrong with the paradise they found.

I'm not sure I really like the whole "we can only access a small part of the ship".. it's too much like Atlantis. With so many planets to explore, do they also need to fall back on the "find new toys and dangers lurking alongside them" theme as well?

I liked it!  I just discovered Farscape so now I have two Scifi shows to watch.  Happy times, what with South Park and The Office having new episodes.

To elaborate: This is the first Stargate series that has a real production quality to it.  I watched 7 seasons of SG1 before abandoning ship, so don't take it the wrong way.  SG1's production sucked, and Atlantis was unwatchably cheesy.  I like the BSG feel this new series has to it.

well i watched it .... was impressed by the production like modjoe mentioned, but not by the characters. I already dont like 3 of the characters. Could be promising but it looks like the series is going to be progress VERY Slowly. I also hoped Eli would be the first person to die, he is really a thorn in the show's side.

First off, Lost is a relative Newbie. They aren't copying or following Lost. Forget Lost.

Secondly, I really liked this show. This is coming from someone who was not entirely optimistic as you can tell from my earlier post. I think everything from the sex scene, to the heavy amount of blood, and even the way the set was designed shows that they are trying to shake off a little of the cheese-factor from Stargate. The plots will see familar because this is still Stargate, but as long as they keep more than one ball in the air at a time these shows can continue to be more or as entertaining as anything else on TV. I actually liked all the characters as I always have when it comes to Stargate, but a little more background on the Asian lady and a little more fleshing out of the Medic wouldn't hurt. I'm sure there is plenty of that to come.

Finally, I thought both the actor and character of Eli is the best part of the show. They obviously are using him to sort of represent the average Stargate fan. He is literally thrust into the middle of the Stargate Universe and kind of puts things in a whole new perspective. Those saying he is fat or comparing him with Hurley both here and on other forums are wrong. Yeah he's overweight, but not so much that it'll define his character or even be something people will consider as the show moves forward. Eli is the anchor of the show and personally I find it a little refreshing that this time it isn't so much military based(SG1) or Science based(Atlantis).

Interesting, I might have to check this out. I haven't really set down to dedicate some serious watching since the Sopranos ended.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

i dont like eli not because he's fat, but because he's an idiot. He gets beamed up into a spaceship, goes to another world and is worried more about eating then helping work on some super futuristic technology. The only thing he took serious in the whole show was when that guy died and even that was stupid because nobody could figure out that sacrificing 1 person to save 50 others is necessary. He is a distraction and an annoyance imo, they could have picked a better "civilian" team member. Hopefully they change his character or something later in the series, otherwise its just gonna bother the hell out of me every time i see him.

I agree... I thought the whole "moral dilemma" of sacrificing 1 person for the entire group to survive took waaaay too much time and was blown out of proportion. I can see why Eli is a MIT dropout... he's a moron and only seems to do things half-assed.
