Would it be worthwhile to start playing EQ now?

sliversliver Member Posts: 132

Would it be worthwhile? Would i be able to make any marked in-game progress in the time before eq2 comes out? And how much would it cost for me to play the game with the number of expansions needed? I did play eq for a month trial, and ive played practically every other mmo in existence, so i wouldnt have to deal with the noob/adaptation factor. Just need something to pass the time, and a primer on the world of norrath wouldnt hurt either.

IMHO it would be worthwhile just to experience a historical game. Kind of like driving a 1956 Chevy. It does not compare to todays cars. But in its day it was tops. A fun experience to drive/check out to see what a classic car/game is like.

EQ2 should be out definatly by summertime 2005. (6 to 8 months from now maybe. 12 months from now the most.) If you want any chances of making progress in EQ, you MUST buy the game, and the Bazaar Expansion. Try joining a new server, or one of the newer servers. Ask some of the EQ vets what the most newest servers are. (I play on Xegony. It's a newer server, but not among the newest.) You have better chances of finding players your level on the newest servers. And players who are not jaded, burned out, uber-twinked, etc....

I estimate it would cost roughly $50.oo (USA) to buy the basic EQ game and the Bazaar Expansion. That would easily hold you over for 6 months if you play roughly 5 hours a day or so. If you want to buy ALL the expansions..... you are looking at roughly $100.oo to $150.oo (USA) total cost. There are stores with special deals. There is even a special EQ game pack with the basic game and most of the expansions included.

Platinum edition should hit stores any day now and gives you EQ plus every expansion to date for $30.

I bought EQ Evolutions for $20 and it has all but 2 expansions.  I plan to get Plat because it's cheaper then buying the 2 expansions I am missing seperate.

Summertime 2005? Eq2 will be out between Nov and Dec of this year. The folks at sony station already announced this to some of the online video game news sites. That EB and Software Etc were told by reps that Eq2 is gonna be released Nov 21, 2004.

If you want to believe that, then that is you. EQ2 is a 4th generation MMORPG. In the same generation as SWG. Entire new game engine. TONS of bugs to work out in Alpha and Beta. Yes they could release EQ2 right now, or 4 to 5 months from now like you say... but then they will KILL EQ2 with a shoddy release. Better off waiting until summertime 2005 and releasing a near perfect game. Than to end up like AO did, which still has not fully recovered from one of the worse game releases in history. AC2 now holds the crown as worse ever game release. At least AO was barely able to turn things around. AC2 completly died. Do you want EQ2 to die? Or would you rather wait and be patient and get a game that is 95% to 99% finnished?

In my opinion it is most definately worth to give EQ a try.  Just download the free trial and see if it is your cup of coffee.

    Have fun gaming.

I wanna explain something, AO had one of the worst launches in the mmorpg industry, but NOW its catalogued as one of the best mmorpgs.

BTW i dont believe SOE with "EQ2 will be released on Nov"

They did the same 1 year ago, 6 months ago, and 3 months ago.

    Release Date expected: Fall 2005

First, it's worth trying.  IMO.  Though I have come to despise Sony's devotion to the almighty dollar at the expense of their players, the game is still one of the most comprehensive, content-filled romps out there.  If you've played lots of other games, odds are you have some online friends playing EQ... find out where they are and pick that server.  You'll find it much more fun that way, as otherwise you will just end up playing a FPS with a lot of other people around!

EQ2.. My prediction: December 1, 2004.  They'll put out a buggy version right before XMas, with a huge patch in January to fix most of them.  They don't want to put out the buggy version, but they want to make the holiday sales frenzy.  Too many millions of dollars at stake...

Yes , I think if you are looking for a game to play to pass the time EQ would be the one. No, you may not get to do everything in the game before EQ2 comes out but you will understand the lore of the game more and understand why things are the way they are in EQ2.

The newest server on EQ is Morden Rasp. Another prefered server is Maelin Starpyre .. The "newbie" server is called Stromm. You will find that if you pick an older server you will have a hard time finding people to group with unless you have friends already on that server that are willing to power level you.

I hadn't played EQ for over a year... I just started back... and I realized how much I missed it, how much fun I had.  I'll prolly just play til EQ2 comes out, who knows, maybe I'll do both!  lol image

My bigger fear...was Cher not being there or not have her items.  But even after a year inactive...she was still there and just as awesome as ever! image  hehe

Its ALWAYS worth while to start playing EQ!   image

It might not be a bad idea to start now. Relica (spelling) has a great point. There is a lot you can learn in terms of the cities, NPCs, points of interest, history, storyline, etc. that may be of benefit too. At the very least you can orient yourself to the world of EQ. But as has been posted, might be best to join one of the newer or newbie servers. Older servers' population may be overwhelmed with high leveled toons to the point where you'd feel left out (maybe not). but that should stop you from checking it out and giving it a shot....make your own opinion of it's credibility to being worthwhile for you :)

But what if we're not trying to just fill the void until EQ2?

I'm personally considering just getting EQ and saying to heck with waiting for EQ2 (I know, I'm a blasphemer). EQ has boat loads of content and is (in theory) relatively stable, right? My only concern is how long will SOE keep EQ alive for after EQ2 is released?

Also, does EQ have group finding functionality like in DAoC? I know it didn't when I played it eons ago, but did they *must* have added that feature in an expansion or something?

I never played DAoC so I don't know what sort of 'group finding' thing they use, but in EQ you can do /lfg on and it puts up a lfg flag , or you can just type /lfg and it brings up a window that shows you who is lfg and it also shows you if they have any grouping preferences. And yes , that window is new, but I'm not sure exactly which expansion they put it in with.

And even if you want to play EQ and aren't waiting for EQ2 to be released it is still a good , stable game. Even with all the new super hyped games that have been released the game is still going strong. Morden Rasp is their newest server and it just opened about 4 months or so ago.

No, it would not be worthwhile to start EQ now.  The game will be nearly dead when EQ2 arrives within the next few months.  I could see it drop down to four or five servers.

I recently picked up the Platinum Boxed set and I have to say I'm having a blast. I'll still be switching to EQ2 when it comes out, but you really can't beat the original game and 7 expansions for $30. Definitely worth it in my opinion, whether you're looking for something just to pass the time until EQ2 or WoW comes out, or if you're looking for something more long term. The newer servers are great, I play on Morden Rasp and the newbie areas and most other areas are packed, never a problem finding a group or anything, hell, I left newbie area early because it was so crowded. If you've never given EQ a try, or it's been a while since you have, now is a great time to do so. Lotsa people seem to be picking up the Platinum boxed set and trying it out, which means lotsa other newbies and lowbies to group and play with.

I prolly will re-sub soon, and I have no plans of playing EQ2, at least not at release. I will wait to hear if its just another flop like all other game sequels. And oh god, am I tired of playing crappy games that the devs feed this "will get better soon!" crap to everyone for months on end *cough*AC2*cough*. EQ is such a well established online game with so much content, it pisses me off how everyone just migrates to the new and the "better" just because...THis game better not die, but right now, its worthwhile...::::28::

EQ 1 is great but I would not waste money on it so close to the release of EQ 2.

EQ 1 will be great as a help to understand EQ 2 though, so I would suggest you jumped over to http://eqlive.station.sony.com/ and registred for a 30-day free trial.

Yes get it now while its out......its a great game....and don't listen to some of these people.....

"So close to release"......what? From what I know...there eithger in alpha is phase one of Beta....so..it iis not "close" to release.....

I have been playing eq for about 3 yrs on and off and I still love this game and currently own all 7 of the expansions.....

I am gonna keep playing this game and get future expanions and probably play eq2 at the same time.....

This guy's opinion will be proven to be very inaccurate 1 year from now LOL! EQ will suffer some drop in players, but not to the point of being nearly dead, or being dead. As long as EQ has 100,000 accounts it will easily fit the industry standard of being a hit MMORPG. And since EQ has already fulfilled the intended shelf life cycle of a MMORPG, it basically runs itself aka it almost has no overhead cost. EQ has been soooo profitable, that 3 other MMORPGs were made from profits from it! PS, SWG, and EQ2. Not to mention the tons of EQ expansions. EQ will never die because it will always rake in a profit. Even if it ever sinks down to 50,000 accounts, or even 20,000 accounts. image

For all I know you could have made up your mind by now, but I definitely think that Everquest is worthwhile to start playing now, next month and even after Everquest II comes out. I am going to be trying EQII, but I will not be leaving behind my Everquest world and my friends.

It kind of makes more sense to start the game now since there are a bunch more features to help out the new and lower players of the game, like walkthroughs, tutorials, tips on gameplay, tips on fighting and many other things. They have made being a low level person much more understandable than it once was, starting you off with spells and ablities and skills, that they had not done in the beginning. It is so that the new players can become more comfortable within the world of Everquest faster.

And it is not that hard to get into the higher levels, if you ask around. People will tell you where to go and as long as you do not beg for gear, chances are people will help you with some.

I started playing EQ back in Sept 2004.  I picked up the Platinum edition and have had nothing but a blast with it since!  image  The server I'm on (Karana) is one of the older severs filled with 65+ lvl toons.  Most of the players are more than willing to help a newbie with where to go, items to get, and buffs.  Don't be intimidated by the higher level toons, as they were once newbs like yourself (strange but true!)image.  It's also not unheard of for a higer level player to have lower level alts, so finding a group/ldon/plane/raid is not a concern for me.  image
