Change of username should never be implemented in an mmorpg.

devilisciousdeviliscious Member UncommonPosts: 4,359

Why? Because part of long term playing of an MMORPG is a player reputation based on how they treat other players in the game. It allows some guy to be a creep, stalk you all over a game then be able to go change their name and come after you again attempt to regain trust only to stalk you more.

Why would any game want to allow for change of username? It is the worst  Idea I have ever heard.

Being a girl in an mmo and constantly stalked by creeps, it is hard enough to keep them at bay, this type of system only allows for them to be able to be an ass for years then go change their name and follow you around more.  Are they trying to run women off? is that what this is supposed to be a " girl repellant for games"

Who thinks of these stupid ideas?!!

    It's a stupid idea.

But typically game company are happy to do so, since they get paid from it.

They would lose money not gain it from allowing it. The many people they run off by allowing one guy to change his name and run around harassing people would not be profitable.

Catering to the one guy who likes to stalk others and be an ass, while running off everyone he is an ass to does not make for a good investment. Investing in your long term community, not a turnover rate increases profits, not the other way around.

Does anyone think this is a good idea?!

Maybe someone doesn't like their character name but doesn't want to level a new character?

The exploit is not worth the cosmetic.  They name their character, they should name it something they are happy with in the first place.

Why would they be unhappy with something they decided?  they could just put a warning on the game when they create their username reminding them that this is their name in the game so they should make sure they are happy with it.

This can be fixed very easily by having the ignore or block list change along with the name.

  • Mattimeo41Mattimeo41 Member Posts: 50

I've actually never even heard of it being "exploited" until now. In many games, you block the entire account when you block a character so this isn't a problem in that case, either.

  • devilisciousdeviliscious Member UncommonPosts: 4,359

I don't ignore people, I want to know what they are saying about me. Ignoring them just allows for them to sit there talking smack and you cannot see what they are saying.

Besides, this absolutely ruins the reputation people build for themselves in  games. If that reputation is poor, hackers/ scammer/  liars/ betrayal, they should be held accountable by the player base for those actions. If they make a poor reputation, they should be stuck with it.

  • Mattimeo41Mattimeo41 Member Posts: 50

So you whine about people bugging you, then refuse to block them? I can see the problem right now.

I don;t whine about it, I kill them in game, how am i supposed to know who needs to be killed? What about mercs and bounties?

That isn;t a solution at all. Then I have them iggied, cant see what they are saying. They could be standing next to me being recruited for my guild, scamming my best friend and i wouldn;t see any of it happen.

Players should be held accountable in game by their peers for their actions.  How can you put a bounty on someone without having their name stay the same? There is no real arguement for the need for name change. It ruins gameplay.

What are you babbling about? Change username would run off girls not bring them to the games. LOL

Being forced to change your name because some creep won;t take a hint, or having the same guy stalk you repeatedly by changing his name would make girls want to leave the game,  not stay.

Having evryone know what he does allows women to see him coming a mile away. Girls talk about EVERYTHING you know ..

What exactly is the problem here?

Is it you being stalked by them or getting harassed? Because you seem to have conflicting interest. first you want them to stop stalking you, I'm not sure how you plan to do that if you're not willing to put them on your ignore list, Now you want to know what they are saying about you. If they are saying bad things, what does it matter if you know them who you are?

Also, scamming your best friend? That's a pretty hard thing to do these days as making a trade requires both parties to accept the deal.

I make them stop stalking me by killing them, everyone kills them. They  enter any type of pvp zone,  they get creamed. You blacklist their name, put bounties on their head and post exactly what the y are being blacklisted for.

They then cannot be recruited by legitmate guilds, they are barred from trade, they are basically ran out of town until they are removed from the list and redeem themselves.

You must be an " in game player" most people I hang with are " in and out of game players". This requires reputation word of mouth references in order to  build the trust to allow them to be in your messenger, vent, TS be given passwords to log in to guild forums, ect..

The ability to cloak their identity compromises not only the guild systems, it compromises your personal security if they turn out to be some repeat keylogger.

So in order to know who they are you have to go look them up in your ignore list and see all their names listed?

This would make it very difficult on large guilds, and is not worth the hassle because peaches wants to change his name to chuck. This can easily be solved by stating " are you happy with this name? Hope so because your stuck with it!" at the time of creation. a hellofalot less trouble.

Well you can only kill them in games that allow FFA PVP and that number is decreasing pretty fast, especially in modern mmorpgs as Faction vs Faction seems to be the new norm.

Why would it matter if he changes his name? Obviously if he stalks you you'll notice it pretty quickly regardless of his name.

Technically a person could do something bad and then simply change his name. Will this happen sometime? Sure. Does it happen often enough to justify completely removal of name change? Probably not.

I don't know of any game that lets you change your name for free.

About guild forums and such, those are all out of game things which you can't hold the game development studio responsible for.

Acxtually it has happened alot, they create new accounts and such and then attempt to gain your trust. The barrier being they must create more than one account to do so, which takes time and effort. Changing names does not.

Considering guilds are the core of their player base, they should take compromising guilds into consideration when making these changes.

They also should take into consideration  that one of the core features in an mmorpg community is " reputation" and how are you supposed to know who is reputable and who is not if they can just simply change their name?

They should be able to create a new account, but NO NAME CHANGES.  That way they have to start over from scratch if they built a poor reputation for themselves. That is noones fault but their own.

Name changing punishes the core player base, long term players, not the people causing problems.

yes, you would have to look them up everytime your guild gets a new application. Yes you would hav to look them up and post all of their alias's everytime they changed their name and update blacklists, creating a buttload of confusion to bounty hunters that have split seconds to decide whether or not their  is a bounty on their heads.

This would create a royal pain in the ass for guild, merc and bounty hunters. before you could trade with anyone new, you would have to check this long list of alias..  and for what reason? because  some idiot misnamed themselves? lol

  • SlaynnSlaynn Member UncommonPosts: 109

It's the internet.  If someone is stalking you there usually is an amazing ability to turn them off.  If they come after you under a different name you can turn them off too.

If you have a rash of stalkers then I would seriously consider looking at your own behavior.  The female gamers that I play with have zero issues with that kind of stuff because they do not allow themselves to be a target or when someone is actually severely offensive they 'turn them off' (ignore, report etc.).

In the rare case that someone is seriously stalking someone else and they find work arounds to the tools given to you I'm sure a phone call or two to the service provider can fix that.   I dislike the fact that people can change their names also but I disagree with using stalking as an excuse.  I would prefer the option to not change your name because of the fact that people can be assholes or ninja looters and get away with it.

It's gotten to the point where some MMOs have been reduced to little more than success dispensers. Don't think. Don't challenge yourself. Do as little as possible... but still be rewarded for it. Yeah.. *that's* fun.

You don't need to ignore anyone in game to solve this kind of problem. This is the solution I suggest when playing a game and someone conducts themself in a lude manner or makes some offensive comments to you.

Simply report them to a GM or customer service agent. Typically game companies take a harsh stand against lude behavior and reporting them should outright handle your problem. If the problem persists you might consider just ignoring what they say as opposed to putting them on your "ignore list" and avoiding them in general.

Hmm I guess I could put it like this... someone creates the name xXSephirothxXxx when they are 13-14 years old, they play the game for 5 years and now that they are a bit older, more mature, etc. they can't stand the name anymore and can't stand being on the character because of it. I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to change the name...

Punishing others in order to punish the bad seeds... I don't know there needs to be some solution to it =/

Maybe when someone examines the character (which is what guilds usually do when they recruit) there is a list of names the character has been during its lifetime... or something of the sort?

Guild leaders do not up and change their names.. you must be thinking of mmorpgs as single player games.  we are not talking about one person here. The guild works as a unit, not just individuals.  No phone calls to service providers do not stop  stalkers, obviously you have never been stalked. The police do not even stop stalkers. It is up to the girl to handle it , that is just our tough luck.

stalking is the SAME as being ninja looters .. at least to girls. It is just as important to us as them being a scum bag scammer.
