Other playable factions beside the Federation?

YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

I remember a long time ago that there would be two playable factions. The Federations and one other, Klingon or Romulan. But all I seen/heard since then is about the Feds.

So, will there be other playable factions and thus will PvP be available between them?

Currently only the Klingon empire  has been confirmed as the only other faction.

Hopefully this will change as I would love to see some Romulan and Cardassian or even Ferengi ( most def a crafter /trader faction of choice) goodness in the game.

At launch, only the Federation and Klingon Empire will be playable. Cryptic has hinted that other factions

(Romulan & Cardassian) may be added in a future expansion.

It should also be noted that despite only launching with 2 factions, you can still play virtually any race in the star trek universe on either side as well as being able to create your own. Customization of your ship and crew is a major point in this game. :)

Yeah, as others have stated only the Feds and Klingons will be present at launch but they have stated in the past that the Romulans, Cardasians and Dominion are all on the drawing board for expansions in the future. I would imagine that the Dominion would require a rather large expansion though as they would have to add at least a portion of the Gamma Quadrant as well. Sounds like they are already planning to expand this game greatly down the road which is great. People are worried that this game will be too Federation focused but I think you'll find that once they add a few more factions to the mix that won't be the case as the Feds will have war on 2 or possible 3 fronts! Sounds like it will be a great game for PvP once the first couple of expansions are released. Not that it won't be from the start especially for the Kilingon faction with not only faction based PvP but also House vs. House PvP as well.

Yep, just looking like it's the Federation versus the Klingons in Faction PVP at launch. Of course, remember that the Federation is made up of several different races themselves. So, this opens up the possibility of several player "races" at the start.  Leaving other larger known race factions for future expansions is a wise move I'd say.  Gotta leave something to draw people into buying them in the future. :D

And of course, for those that are too impatient to wait for the factions to be added officially, there is the custom race creator. You can make your own version of a Romulan or whatever right from the start using this if you want.  Or, create something totally unique to your own design. That's definitely a nice feature.

I think a third hostile faction would help a lot in PVP. I think the Borg would be cool and they are hated by Klingon and Federation alike. Along with everyone else.

    Edit: For spelling.

You and me both, but sadly it doesn't look like that will ever happen. I've been wanting a game where you play as Borg ever since Activision canceled "Borg Assimilator" back in 2001.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

I think more than likely the Romulans will be the first expansion race/faction to be added. This would give the 3 faction war that you guys are talking about as the Federation doesn't really trust them and the Klingons absolutely hate them. The Romulan Star Empire also borders on both the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Don't count the Romulans out just because their homeworld got obliterated. By 2409 I'm sure they are just as much a threat in the quadrant as they ever were.

I still think that playable Borg would be very hard to do and have them be believable. I'd much rather have them be the NPC bad guys (The TNG Borg not the wimpy Voy Borg). They just seem to fit this role much better than being a playable faction.

See now this is exactly what i gave Aion crap for a cheap product that is definitely unfinished and yet they figure they can sell it off anyhow.

If all you people band together and refuse to buy the game AND let them know, they will be forced to make a better product that is worthy of buying.I used a similar example before...this is like releasing an NFL game, with only the Bears and the Giants. Then what ?sell you the rest of the teams later?

It is not an easy task recreating a KNOWN entity like Star Wars, but hey if you are trying to cash in on the name alone, you had better deliver a product worthy of it.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Sorry but if they tried to do every available faction at launch we would get a game that would try to do everything but wouldn't do anything very well. I'd much rather they do it in installments the way they are doing and give each faction the attention it deserves. This is what makes the MMO genre great. You start off with a solid base game and add to it over time. This also adds to longevity as if every possible thing was in for launch what would there be left to do after playing it for a year or more? Not to mention a Star Trek game like they are making that tried to include every possible faction would probably take 10+ years to develop. Oh and it is 'Star Trek' and not 'Star Wars' by the way.

Your Football analogy doesn't really apply here by the way. In a sports game sure you have a large selection of teams but they way you play them remains exactly the same for every team. In STO every faction will have unique content and their own play style. It's a little more complex than your average Football game. From your post I can tell that you have very little real knowledge about this game. Why don't you go to the official site and read up on it a little before you come here and make nonsense comments like the ones above.

Theres also the fact that Cryptic needs to make money and expansions are a great way to do this.  They need something for the expansions, correct? Its not a single player game, its an MMO, that evolves. Give it time to evolve.

Now, as to playable borg: not happening. Borg have no individuality. How would we have players playing hive-mind Borg? As well, there is balance. How do you balance the sheer power of borg cubes with the other ships? People want to play borg because they want to rampage through ships. Its not happening. Players will never get to be borg in STO.

Good thing to note here is that it is the Klingon Defense Force not the Klingon Empire as the second faction only really important because this adds the Gorn, Orion and a few others to there side as well.  Also gameplay between these two sounds like it will be very different so I can understand why they would only want to start out with two factions with good gameplay for both rather than generic gameplay for several factions.

I beg to differ... If it was the KDF the opposing faction would simply be called Starfleet. Because it's called The United Federation of Planets the opposing faction is The Klingon Empire. Their Military arms are called Starfleet and the KDF. You will be serving in the KDF for the defense and glory of the KLINGON EMPIRE! Qua' Pla'!!!

I would also guess they will add the Romulans as the next faction.  Though they could surprise us and do some sort of criminal organization that ties in several of the species.

I also agree with the poster that said they wouldn't do the borg as a faction.  The borg make a very good enemy where all the species have to come together and fight.  Though there is a war it was mentioned that the factions from time to time might need to band together.  A threat like the borg is perfect for this and will likely be kept as a major pain in all the players aft sections.

Yes it will be fedrats & klingons at start with "neutral zone pvp" fighting for control of some minor race, or mining asteroids in the area iirc. Craig also mentioned that you can level up completly with pvp. But if you dislike pvp, there is no need to do it.

For third faction I ofcoarse favour the rommies.
