OMFG ............Ultima Online 2 cancelled, Dragon Empires cancelled, Earth and Beyond canned, UXO cancelled......and now what? Wish cancelled.
OMG because of this, i can see future games being cancelled:
Atriarch
Dark and Light
Darkfall
Fallen Earth
Pirates of the Burning Sea
MU Online
Sadly, only SOE, NC Soft and Turbine games seem to survive
Whats happening to the world i used to live?

Well.. Games that wont make profit will be canced.
Those games would have cost way more to make then the return proffits. That is the only reason for canceling a game.
It isn't the end of the world. It is called marketting, and in an mmorpg saturated market, it is HARD to compete. Not EVERY game can come out and do well.

MU is free, so probably won't be cancelled, or if it IS cancelled it will probably be because there weren't enough people clicking their banners to make a profit to keep the servers up. Thats logical.
And I haven't heard of any of the others except Dark and Light, so they will probably be cancelled, like you said, because there isn't enough word of mouth/hype around them to make them recognizable to an average gamer (myself).
Oh my, ya scared me! I thought the Lord has finally come back to earth and I missed it while watching the NFL playoffs today.
There are still great looking mmo's to watch for in 2005 imo.
Some that I will look foward to seeing released...
In order of my own anticipation:
1) Dark and Light
2) Mourning
3) Dungeons and Dragons Online
4) Middle Earth Online
5) Asherons Call 1 Expansion with new graphics overhaul and new servers
Surely one of these can be a great mmo huh?

Middle earth online released in 2005? You don't seriously believe that, do you? Looks like Duke Nukem forever might even be released sooner tha MEO
*sigh* I wish MEO was released already though

Yeah what the heck? What data did they analyze from beta testing that made them want to cancel anyway? I hope it's not that they can't deliver what they said they could, cuz that doesn't bode well for D&L!
Not that I was gonna play Wish (I'm waiting for D&L), but this definitely doesn't sit well with me. These two games appeared similar as far as comments from these boards. Oh boy, let's see what game is next...
Some time last year after UXO was Cancelled There was a post that asked what game would be cancelled next... Many people said Wish.... I guess they got their wish..

Yea, Dark and Light has me a little scared though. They are another one of those "Not in the spotlight" games which I could see folding. I was kind of suprised at the Wish cancellation though. Normally rumors fly around for weeks before they come to fruitation and the game pulls the plug on it. Wish was just like "Congratulations on being specially selected for Beta, but unfortunately we're cancelling the project you were supposed to Beta. You're still special though."

before DE was cancelled, the idea of a game actually into development was just crazy to me. i haven't heard of atriarch or fallen earth (will look into both) but from the ones on the list i've heard of, i'll say Pirates of the Burning Sea will be next. Don't get me wrong. I've been wanting this game for over a year now. But it's lack of a major development company has me worried. Also, if Mourning is released, it will be without the forced permadeath or it will be on select servers.
I beleive the only successful MMO's are gonna be those coming off a huge franchise (i.e. Middle Earth Online), household name of the genre (i.e. Dungeons & Dragons Online), or are totally different and new (i.e. I'd like to see a MMO about the World of Darkness, the one with Vampire The Masquerade and all the others from White Wolf).
Fantasy MMO's have been done and redone. There is one coming called Vanguard and the only reason I think it's gonna be released it's because it is backed by Microsoft, and wheterver Bill wants, Bill gets.
I think we'll see a lot more project cancelled in the coming months...
The problem is all these new games and current ones are pretty much one in the same.
How many games try to be PvP Online Games?
How many games role playing games are there?
How many times can you spread those player bases between more and more games as they come out when besides new graphics they offer really nothing new and ground breaking as far as a world, and mess of play styles. It getting to the point to what online game will I play for next few months till this game comes out, instead of lookin at online games as something for long term, alot of player treat each game as Flavor of the month.

Market is just oversaturated, so the games with less to offer are going to fail.
Wish seemed to be pretty far along (like DE), but not much buzz about it. There will be more casualties too.
A ton of solo games get cancelled all the time. Because they don't take multiple years to produce, the industry doesn't work to build up a huge buzz about them. So consumers don't hear about all the solo game casualties.
I don't think it's anything to be alarmed at (unless you really wanted to play Wish). The MMO industry is just starting to experience the fight for limited markets.
Wrong.
The reason it will probably be released, and more than likely succeed will be due to 2 main factors. It's financial backer MS has the money to burn, and time to wait and see. And it's being headed up by Brad Mcquaid the leading light behind EQ Before SOE got hold of it.
It will not try to be massively different but will simply do Everquest again, but with ALL the flaws corrected this time. At least, that's what they claim, and if they succed it will sell.
As for other genres. I don't think a non fantasy game will appeal to the masses, but might carve out a stable niche. Wish did not fail because players do not want to play in a fantasy world. They did not like PnC, did not like the graphics, and many wanted instant exp gratifaction and exp grind. So they posted in droves how the game sucked or stopped playing beta, and MR observed these numbers and made the call. They did not feel they would get the numbers needed, but being a fantasy game was NEVER an issue for fans.
I didn't even know UXO was cancelled, but hey, it doesn't surprise me. Did you see the graphics? Man were they awful.
When games like EQ2 and WoW set new standards for amazing graphics Fantasy MMORPGs, how can any company even bother creating an MMORPG that can't compete with'em?
Yeah yeah I know, so I didn't play the game, so maybe the gameplay "could" of been good. But who cares? Presentation is important when announcing a game. I have a hard time trying to play a game with bad graphics but according to some people have great gameplay, especially when there are games out there with both great graphics and great gameplay all together.

well when everquest first came out they didn't care what people cared or felt about the game neither did turbine with asheron's call. you don't see this determination in the new companys
You are all forgetting one thing about DnL. It has a huge following in Europe. I hightly doubt DnL is going anywhere but release.
HAHAHAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHA
ahhh.
Thanks for the laugh.
It was like a new era of gameing...An unexplored frontier.
Which is why EQ and AC differed so largely in comparison to each other. It was all about trying new things. And both are still avidly played and making money.
Although personally I hated EQ for the trend it set.
It really ruined MMORPG's in my opinion. And as long as people continue paying for the bastard offspring's of EQ, we'll continually see them.
