How Long Do Raids Take?

As the subject reflects: How long do raids take in Lotro? I was thinking of coming back after being away for a year since MoM is now only 10 bucks, however, I was wondering how long raids generally take. Coming from World of Warcraft where Ulduar and Naxxramas take 4-5 hours, (Before you say anything, YES! My PUG's sucked and so did my guild), I dont really want to move to another game that has a similair timesink. If someone could give me a timeframe on how long a person has to commit to get through the various high level raids in the game, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance for your time and help!

While in the past some raids did take many hours to complete, similar to those of other games, most of today's raids are very short and quick, designed to encourage people to play in shorter bursts.  The great problem is that for all of the current raids except one, and most likely all of the future raids, there is a raid gating system that requires a considerable investment of time (which can, again, be done in small doses, but you have to stay committed to it).

There are currently 3 raids for "end-game" content:

    1.  Turtle
    2. Watcher
    3. DN (I can't remember how to spell it)

With the first one, there is no gear required, though you will probably have to have certain feats which may have taken you a bit of work (not too bad).  Thus, I was able to go on a turtle raid within a week of getting an alt to level 60.  Turtle is roughly a 5-minute fight once everyone is gathered.

With the second one, there is a gear gate requiring you to pick up at least 5 pieces of gear from 6 quests.  Those quests take:

    • Grand Stairs: 15 minutes
    • Skumfil: 20 minutes
    • Forges of Khazad-dum: 30 minutes
    • Fil-Gashan: 40 minutes
    • Sixteenth Hall: 1 hour
    • Dark Delving: You won't find a group to do this one anyway, but if you do.. 20 minutes with a good group, more than likely 2 hours + for anything else.

Watcher is a very difficult fight even for a guild (although some guilds have gotten good enough at it to farm it), and while it only takes 5-10 minutes for a good group, I have never actually gotten through it due to wipes.

For DN, you have to have additional pieces of equipment, such as those that drop in the Watcher raid, before you can even go into it.  It is a very lengthy raid from my understanding, but you have to be a hard-core player in a hard-core guild to even access it, generally.

Now, Mirkwood will be coming out soonish... that will raise the level cap, which will both make all the old raids easier and obsolete.  There is going to be another raid in Mirkwood, and I have no idea what time length it will have, but I would expect more short raids in the future to suppliment any long raids.

For the 3 current raids this is what I would expect:

    Turtle: ~5 mins
    Watcher: 15 - 30 mins
    DN: ~4 hours

I will chime in on times as mentioned above. In the group of 6 he mentioned, called "rad"iance runs the time does vary. If you have an entire group who has never done it before, expect to fail the "hard mode" required for the radiance run, thus requiring you to run it again.  Don't forgot others need the item that drops for the radiance piece (so 6 runs if your group beats it and stays together).

If your group is good, and people are on their alts that just hit 60, it's cheezzzzzeeeeeeee.  Your tank/healer need to not suck, and your dps needs to be awake all the time.  The fights in all these instances are pretty fun to me as a mini.

If your group is new to the instance, it will take forever. And you will wipe.

As for the raids, I've never done the two harder of the three.  People basically say "Experienced players only for VM/DN" so even if I had all my rad pieces, I doubt I'd get to go.

Ok, I'm a little confused. I just started playing LOTRO because I've heard it's very accessible, yet some of these raids sound as bad as WOW's highest content, maybe worse. How much of the end-game will I not be able to see if I'm a new player, and do you guys think I'll need the top radiance armor for when Mirkwood comes out?

Sadly, there is certainly Raid content that an average "casual" player will just not be able to do successfully.  I am part of a rather casual kinship myself and there still is several things we have not been able to try/do because we're not "hardcore" enough. However, that being said, there still are other things you can do that are easier. The six and three man content certainly is accessible to the less raid oriented person.

They do have a few 12 and 24 man content which are the really big and time consuming raids (aside from the turtle which is 12 man and takes about 8 mins tops) But, you can easily skip them and not miss too much other then just seeing the area.  Most everything else will be an hour or two at most if your group has complications, less if you don't run into any problems.

You probably will need Radiance gear for something in Mirkwood. But, I don't think (and hope) that you will need it for everything there...

i have been playing for about 8 months, and from what i see there are raid instances that last from 5 mins to 4 - 6 hours, those are the 2 extremes, most lay in the 30 min to 90 min range.  and yes to do the bigger end game stuff, you will need at least some of the "Rad" iance gear, but most of it is not that difficult to get a hold of, and is fun in doing so in its own right.
