Excellent informative post indeed. I'll have to do some follow up research to learn more.
I feel this new time-line is far too young for an entire MMO game to be made off of it. If this star trek online is a success, I wouldn't be surprised if another version comes out in the future based on the new time line. If it proves to increase the popularity of star trek then I'm sure someone would jump on the possibility of creating another MMO for it. Or maybe just an expansion of the present game. Not sure how they'd work that out though... It's like cutting a game in half and the other half doesn't even have the definitions/variables in place yet.

IMO,the best of all the books on the original Star Trek was the book Justman wrote with Herb Solow "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story" So far I have heard not one person refute any of what was written there and this includes Majel Barret Rodenberry herself, whom I am sure wasn't flattered by the many negative stories told in it about her or her husband.

I really like the movie, thought it was well done and the storyline was actually very clever. Saying all that, the latest movie is not OUR Star Trek, it is of the next generation. STO is about what we grew up on, what we know. I understand why they made the story line in the movie the way they did, as to go off in any direction they wanted without all the "Trekkies" screaming that they got this wrong and that wrong. It opens up the sequals to what ever they think of. As for STO, it would not be condusive or practical to follow the new movie storyline since it obviously takes years to make a great MMO. I for one am just happy this project is still going and didn't fall to the waste side.
I don't like how Abrams is trying to turn Star Trek into an action hero extravaganza, the same way that I wouldn't like someone coming along and turning Star Wars into a slow paced, contemplative sci fi drama.
Of course you have to have the conflict and the action, most people liked the Dominion Wars in DS9 even if they didn't care for the rest of the show. But there is a limit on how much an IP that millions love should be changed or "rebooted."
If and when a new Star Trek series comes to TV, all I can say is I really hope it will stay true to the original, instead of completely turning decades of acclaimed content and story on it's head.
I would like sort of a Star Trek: Factions. Where we could see what it's like to be part of the Klingons and Romulans, not only Federation (done to death). Of course, that's almost impossible since they'd need to create 3x the resources and models, and also a bigger cast with smaller 'on-screen' appearances.
Yeah I only read up to 'resources and models' which lead me to believe it was regarding an MMO. The last line I missed which talks about 'cast' and what not. Whoops.

Thanks again, I'm going to look that one up.

Well they keep saying that you'll be able to play as the Klingons in this release... The two factions are Fed & Klingon.

Im looking forward to STO and i really do hope that a new tv series will be as good as TNG and voyager.
I think Wolfing was referring to a new TV series and not the game in his post.
