Some things have work-arounds... the command not happening? I have Might as my primary set. Shockwave being a maintain attack (hold the key down for those that don't know). Often when I start it, it doesn't look like it's going, but i keep the key held down anyway. A second later, it finally shows as if I was holding the key down the whole time. Previously, I'd try pressing the key down again, only to find that it's now on a cooldown because I pressed it already.

This isn't the case for blocking. I often find myself trying to block, only to find out that my key press "didn't register" ... unlike the previous paragraph where I said that it registered me as attacking the whole time, this time it doesn't. Quite frustrating. It's like each issue operates under their own set of rules.

You are describing what I saw.  It is just incredibly clunky and unreliable, something that a mechanic like this should NEVER be especially given that these things - charge/discharge/block are the whole of combat in this game.  The implementation is severely flawed and one can look at what they had in mind and seriously question if the idea is even workable as it is rather simplistic and easy given that it is used in an auto target game and not a shooter.

I very much disagree.  At the basic level all these characters play the same - the only thing that changes is the animations.  CO combat is about three things - charge/discharge/block, period.  The powers are mostly just animation variations and not really things that change the basic mechanic of charging power, discharging it, and blocking and since content is very limited each time through on a new toon you are replaying the same thing in at least partly the same way over and over like no MMO I have ever played.

Actually the responsivness of blocking isn't bad at all. Its just a matter of mentally adjusting to the pace of the animations. You stop your action, wait about 500 ms, then press shift to block. I understand it isn't perfect but you can adjust to it and never miss a block. I used to complain about this on the forums back in beta. You really shouldn't have to re-press shift to block, but you do and its never been fixed. Fortunately, you CAN work around it with a bit of practice and get the timing nailed down. I don't even notice anymore and my main character is built around blocking for energy.

But that is the problem, when it comes to the core combat mechanics it is all about workaround this and workaround that.  This is supposed to be a fluid active type of combat and all the 'workarounds' make it clunky and the worst of a static system with the worst of a dynamic system as well.  Add that to the other issues and you got a very broken game, very broken.

It is very fluid and active after you've adjusted. The workarounds don't prevent it from being fluid and active they make it fluid and active. Sorry you never learned to play, but I probably should have told you the day you asked about the game that you shouldn't be trying it. You're way WAY too sensitive to gaming quirks and CO is a very quirky game.

I adjusted to the quirks and now the game plays fine, fluid, dynamic, responsive, and all those other good gaming adjectives. You, on the other hand, never made those adjustments so to you its broken. I try not to get hung up on what something is supposed to be like, but instead accept it for what it is. I make the changes in how I play to fit the game instead of expecting the game to make the changes to fit how I play. See the difference?

And when it comes to words like 'static' and 'dynamic', you should be banned from using those words. I'll never forget how dense you got last time you tried to use those words.

I dont have any one favorite MMORPG.  if I did i would be playing it right now =)

But games that were great for their time and I had the most fun in:

    UO

    Everquest

    Everquest 2

    DAoC

(as much as people will hate to hear it) WoW, only reason I quit WoW after playing it for 2 years was because the raiding was ruining my social life and I was losing friends

I think EVE is a great game too but I only played it for 3 months in beta and then a month after release.  I wouldn't go back to it simply because I won't ever be able to catch up in skills with all the veterans.

I also think Darkfall is a fantastic MMORPG but many people just havent given it a chance.  I played it for the last 5 months, had a blast, and now Im kind of just waiting for North American server transfers to come.  Its not a good game for casual players, but in terms of FFA PVP and full loot, UO style, it is great.  My friends and I used to call it back in UO "The PK rush" when you had gear you didn't want to lose and you got into a fight with another player.  Cold sweat, adrenaline rush. The PVP had real risk and reward.  UO had it.  DAoC had it on the FFA PVP server.  And Darkfall has it.  Im just a huge fan of FFA PVP servers, where players make up their own politics and rules.

My main beef with the MMORPG market nowadays is there is just so much emphasis on quantity over quality.  Back when there was UO, EQ, DAoC, those were some of the only MMORPG's to come out.  It was easy for a player to pick which MMORPG to play.  You had one of 3-4 choices.  They were all decently successful, there were no failing games.  Now there are so many MMORPG's to pick from that you end up buying several games, and you only get to end up playing the ones that succeed if you want a decent player base.  Its like a candy shop.  There are so many different kinds of candy now that instead of just buying something and enjoying it, your constantly worried that you might fill up on a crappy candy or spend your money on a candy that might not be as good as the other candy.

I wish all these companies that are making mediiocre unpolished and incomplete MMORPG's would just pool all their resources together and then they could create monster MMO's that function well, have no missing or broken features, have enough content.

I'm a UO vet myself, from atlantic. I miss that PK rush too. When I was just starting out I used to take off allm y clothes and try to run by the PKs that gathered out front of Covetous. It was exciting to see if I would make it unnoticed. Good times.

I payed for 6 months ,and im not going back on that, because I play it every now and then and theres going to be more content by then, but I mostly won't play the game past 6 months, maybe a month here and there every year but thats it, unless they dish out some major content. Iv been level 40 since the 2nd day of the game because of the headstart, and there is NO endgame. Just grind more missions for mediocre upgrades to gear. Now, I hope this changes, but I doubt il stay past 6 months, only mmo I played more than 6 months is WoW and WAR, and I played A LOT of mmo's, boredom kicks in after 2-3 months for me.

P.S. How the heck do people stay to one mmo for years?

Yeah, I am the problem not this shallow, clunky, content starved game.  What is it with fanboys that they have to attack those who are pointing out obvious problems, I mean especially with a game like this with the same things being cited over and over by all sorts of folks it is fairly obvious the game has issues.  If you still like it fine, say you like it despite the issues - but enough with the attacks on those pointing out commonly cited issues.

A good interface, game or otherwise, is intuitive and works as people want to use it as much as it succeeds at getting to use it 'correctly'.  CO's interface fails miserably at both these important things in so far as it is not very intuitive and not very good at changing people's behavior to a method that works, so what I am others are saying is a real issue.  But beyond the interface clunkiness or lack of intuitiveness, the core problem with the game well exceeds this single issue.  The is very little content, the game has very little replay value, and the problems of matching the great character builder with powers that don't 'break' the characters themes as you play up through the game, add to that the game is extremely easy and now undergoing a series of nerfs to try to artificially create difficulty and what you have is a game that is broken in about every way possible outside the character creation screen.  Now you can attack me all you want but these problems are very real and while I like what CO tried to do, I just think they failed to execute their 'vision' even close to effectively.

I recall another game that tried to reinvent MMO combat (a respectable notion) but failed miserably, AoC.  In AoC the original idea was to have combat be sort of like those fighting games on consoles where you got these ever increasingly cool combo moves and whatnot (like up - down - left - left).  They failed miserably but realized the failure before release and moved the release date back to rework the system to what finally released (still with many issues, the combo system among them).  In a similar way CO's non traditional system of powering up and discharging and blocking is a cool idea that is simply implemented very poorly.  The difference is they went live with their poor implementation and now you got this clunky interface and combat system that is hard to get to work, intuitively or otherwise, and so instead of combat being self sustained action oriented entertainment that it might be if the system worked as it seems they intended the game lost a big chunk of its substance.  In other words, because the system is so flaky combat itself is not so engaging as it otherwise might be so the repetition and struggle drags much more heavily that it otherwise might which exposes other issues of the game like replayability and content.

I have no idea how they do it.  Like you I play one for awhile then another for a while and so on. I cant seem to stay with one for a full month anymore. So if your getting 2-3 out of one your doing well.

It seems like there's always this trend going on with mmo forums and that is the bash wagon, once one person starts it up most people just hop on the wagon. Come on people lets form our own opinions.

Try playing through the game on more than one character. doing the same exact line of quests over and over and over is sickening almost. No variety, no freedom of choice.

    I hope you're not serious.

    1. This isnt a class based game. You can switch roles on one character. I respeced one of my characters from Might right into Claws for example. so you can do multiple frameworks on one character anyway.

    2. I dont care if its a new MMO. It's inexcusable to release with unfinished pvp + severe lack of content. Many people are stuck at Level 31.

There is not even enough content for 1 playthrough let alone multiple. I'm done for now until the game has a 'real release' most likely where they fill the massive content gaps

I stayed with EVE Online for a couple of yrs. But in that game you don't grind to end game and get disappointed. The journey never ends. your character constantly evolves and you learn something new everyday due to the complexity.

I'm so glad I did not purchase 6 months ahead of time I feel for you :(

I got the 14 day trial from someone with a lifetime subscription, and started playing yesterday.

I love the character customization, but that's it. I didn't get beyond level 5, because I just thought everything about the game after the character creation was dull and ugly and uninteresting. If this game was free to play, I'd maybe choose not to play it even then. It felt lifeless and I didn't want to spend time in the world.

However, I actually spent hours with the character creator. But that alone wont make me buy a game.  Nope, this game is just not for me. Even in CoH I managed to get to level 20 before I quit.

its amazing how short some peoples attention spans are. you did not even scratch the surface of the game yet. however to each his own. i cancelled my account due to personal reasons not dealing with the game.

I don't really care if there's "more" to the game. The fundamental feeling of the game didn't jive with me at all. The fact that I couldn't even get far in CoH or CoV made me even less enthusiastic to try this game. I'm not going to spend hours being bored just to get to some "fun" part - a part, for that matter, I may not even enjoy in the first place.

It looks like some people in this thread are waking up to the state of MMOs today.

If enough do, the devs might realize that they have to put out a quality game to be successful.

As disappointed as I am with the game I must say its not as bad as TR in my opinion. At least they had a hook with the character generator and the little bit of PVE content you can find is a little better. And pvp was given a tiny bit more attention at least.

edit- to be specific, I'd consider resubbing to Champions after a bit more content is added. Once I left TR, I knew it was a done deal and I would never come back. There was no temptation; no bond to my character. Everything in TR just felt, I dunno, uninspired? TR just wasnt fun for me at all. Champions, well at least there was a couple things I liked
