I honestly love the game. You cant beat the monthly updates and Turbine is so generous to their customers.
But the community makes me sick. Over the years they've learned to exploit and take asherons call for granted. People have become so lazy and basicly dont play the game. Their computer plays the game. I hate that.
Plus its also full of greifers, I played it for 2 or 3 months after a good long 6 month break and I've had more greifing done to me in those months than I have had sinse I started playing at the release. I delt with it though. One guy was harasing me and my vassale while we were hunting and we lured him into a drudge put and got him killed. I stood there at his corpse and waited for him to come back and when he did i did the mock emote like a hundred times and he never harassed us again.

Shame that you had an unpleasant experience, because on the other hand, that is the reason I have played it for over four years community. Although I have been in some great allegiances and met many great players. It depends on servers, the game etc.
Like any game, and throughout my RPG times, I have played many, I have encountered this in any game. Unfortunately, it exists where ever you go.
A game is what you make it any of them.

Well I agree. AC is awesome and is only going to get better, but the players and fans over on the official forums drive me nuts. Everyone complains and cries. It's honestly really sad that people do this all day and everyday. I do agree on a few complains, but for the most part they are all just lousy and issues that are directed towards other players who cheat and whatnot. Hopefully the expansion will change some views on AC because this game for sure tops my list as number one played game ever.

When I first tried AC back when it first came out. I ran into a lot of people while hunting and in towns. But I didn't have much time to play back then and I had trouble with the billing that my dad said no. So when I started playing EQ1, took some convincing to get him to let me use his card. I started spending more time on that at the time. That was a long time ago and now that I want to try it again it seems that both AC1 and AC2 suffers from the lack of actual people. AC1 at least has bots but the world is empty. No longer do I see people simply hanging out in towns talking, crafting, etc. No longer do I see people running around. I stopped playing very soon and would like to go back one day but really they need to either chance how things are done or at least revamp parts of the world so people see each other.
I never had to much trouble with the community but the lack of people is a problem and can be just as bad if the community was filled with jerks(not saying that is the case, just using it as an example).

Subway doesn't exist anymore, though...they replaced it with a bot-ridden "marketplace" where everyone and their father sets up a bot that trades the most valuable items available for other items.
I think the community as a whole is fine, there are obvious jackasses present, but such is to be expected in any game its size....Though i wish it had more people...the game was so good back in the days of the Hoary Mattekar Hide Robe being the single best item in the game to own as a mage.
I think it all comes down to a very simple explanation. When AC first came out (as with all games of it's era), they didn't develop the games with a scope large enough to encompass all levels of play. My assumption is that they would develop it slowly putting a lot of thought into what may happen to coding modifications and good storylines in-quest. Before MMOGs took off, not a lot of people played games almost non-stop. And once this game came out (as with EQ and many others), people were playing it sometimes 10-12 hours a day or more. Well it doesn't take long to get to fairly high level character when you do that. My humble opinion is that it caught a lot of game developers by surprise that the content they spent so much time on (quests, items. quest stories, etc) became useless very quickly as characters surpassed their usability too fast. I remember quests and items were extremely well done, and you could see a lot of thought had gone into the initial quests. and their stories And the developers were caught with their proverbial pants down, and have been scrambling ever since to catch up to the players. However, this has resulted in a lot of nerfing of items and upgrades because patches and tweaks had to be made so quickly that thought wasn't put into what may happen to every bit of coding all along the way.
And, I think that bots and macros have really lowered the fun and playability of the game. I remember when casting level 7s meant you were almost a god-like character. Now I see level 1-30s being buffed with 7s and sent into their dungeons. They kill everything and level without so much as barely being hit. I used to be proud to say I had a level 90ish life mage. Now with macroing, life mages aren't difficult to level anymore. I remember that life mages were absolutely horrible to play and level until you got war, many many skill credits later. Being high-level doesn't mean anything anymore.
In general, lately, I haven't really had any problems with the community (mainly cause there isn't much of one left). I almost think they should merge worlds together to increase the players playing. It's hard to find non-bot and non-macroing players that are actually online playing nowadays. It's virtually impossible to find anyone to do high-level quests that require 8-10 minimum level 80ish players anymore. And if you can, most of them don't want to spend the couple of hours do to the quest. But the one positive thing is that there are a lot less scammers around, trying to rip people off with all the trading scams they had. I remember at some points I refused to trade with anyone I didn't know because it was so bad. A lot of people I knew did that as well. Since all the new games have come out, I haven't had even one attempt yet. Another good thing I've noticed is that if people know you are actually online, they will trade with you before a bot. Which is what I do. I like to reward the players of the game, not the too-lazy-to-play but want-to-make-money players.
True, but it can become EXTREMELY frustrating and/or irritating.

I remember it did have a time when there was a lot of griefing and various scams being perpetrated. I am sure a lot of that was more of a maturity factor, than just age though. From the MMOGs I've played, I've seen the fewest scams and other ways to ruin the game like that.
An immature and/or young community can be a royal pain. Especially when it came to waiting in line-ups to get quest items. Or even in a fellow that required waiting for respawns so the whole group could get the item. People would jump in front of the line, then quit fellow and recall out. I've seen many a quest ruined because of that. Fortunately as you say, it was generally more mature.

I too loved to play AC, and IMHO 3rd party apps were what took the fun out of the game. Even just being in a fellow with someone that had it made the game less fun. I don't want to know what is all around me within a "X" square mile radius. There's no fun or challenge in that.
I remember the days when level 7s where almost unheard of. I remember just running through town one day, and a level 70 (an almost unheard of level) buffed me with 7s. Everyone else in the town was upset/mad/jealous that I had gotten the level 7s. That was back when the 50k pyreals per scarab was a small fortune, and 7's were used very judiciously. And then these buff bots started showing up, and a level 1 could be fully level 7 buffed for free. It took/takes the challenge out of the game. The fun part of the game wasn't how fast you got to the level, it was the experience along the way. There is very little experience left in the game today other than level grinding and buff bots and macros. And Turbine/Microsoft supported 3rd party apps (to a certain extent) which really turned me off the the game. It's a shame such a great game has fallen to this kind of a level...

This is what i dont like about community.....i dont care about buffbots or trade bots or macroing......but i hate when people have healing programs and pk programs......it pisses me off.....i play dt and with minipk u can see if u can take the player or not. thats not right. 2 many people will run away before the other char even has a chance to see them....whats up with that?
Not sure how you can see if you take the player. Does it show the level/template?
Not sure about eurotimes, but there are some people on during regular US times.
It's the same story for me. I actually played AC 1 for four years (starting at launch). It was my second MMO, and the only one that ever really resonated with me. The 3rd party applications and bots ultimately ruined the whole experience for me, though. The only reason I came to check out this board was to see if things had changed in the two years since I left. Apparently not. Honestly, I'd go back in a second if that problem were corrected, and I wouldn't need new graphics or expansion packs to do it. Unfortunately, the people who run those bots and write Decal apps pay for their accounts too, and I guess Turbine needs every dollar they can get. It's a bit of a heartbreaker, but there's not a lot that can be done about it. You either grin and bear it or you move on. From the sound of it, most people have moved on. More power to 'em.
