What do people think of Travian and Evony?  Has anyone played one of these extensively?

I've played Travian. It's really slow once you start a round (servers reset after someone wins). But once you get things built up and start fighting with people it can be incredibly fun. Just be prepared to find a good alliance or you'll never get very far.

Trivian was pretty decent, very cutthroat.

Evony was a little fun at first, but about a week in I discovered that in order to advance any further, I'd have to BUY BUY BUY from their cash shop. Definitely not my idea of "fun."

I actually found you did not ahve to buy in the cash shop for Evony.  I was in a good alliance who helped each other out though.  The problem was you had to play 24x7 pretty much to stay on top of things and live.

Travian, played it for 1 second, quit because it just feels too clunky to me, Evony I'm still playing after 1 week solid, I'm sure I'll get bored of it, and for some reason people complain it 'takes too long to build', it's not a game to replace your game console, it's a slow game something to replace mafia wars, it's game that you only play 30 minutes a day, I like it, the only thing I don't like about it is the map, it's endless and has no structure, if you choose a continent it doesn't make any difference because all continents are identicle in appearance, except for the 'random' things thrown about, and you never really fight against other countries from what I've seen, you can only fight against your neighbor, so the fake map aspect makes it pretty generic feeling, and if they made structured maps with actual ocean boundaries, etc, it would be better.
