Game mechanics for me. If the system isn't fun, it doesn't matter how much lens flare eye candy there is, or how hyped.

It should be combat. Combats between two heros or a hero and a frantic monster should be intense moments where skills, reaction and preparations decide life and death for the involved; you loose - its game over, you win - you learn alot. But combat isnt like that; imo its more compareable with the monotone pulling the handle on those machines you see in casinos. So i would say that the most important aspect of a typical 2009 MMO is character development. If you dont feel your character is getting better, the mmo is a completely pointless waste of time.

You violated the KISS principle hence no vote on my part.

It is clear, the most important aspect of a MMO is gameplay.  Nothing else comes close.

What could you classify as "gameplay"? Combat mechanics? Check. PVE/Story? Check. PVP? Check. Engame? Check. Crafting? Check.

I hope you understand that gameplay is an umbrella term for different things like the ones I've listed. What is with people wanting an easy choice that summarizes everything into one word? There is a reason I didn't put gameplay on there, because broken down it is one of these things, and that is the point of this poll.

-Computer specs no one cares about: check.

-MMOs played no one cares about: check.

-Xfire stats no one cares about: check.

-Signature no one cares about: check.

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    -Narcissism: check.

For me personaly there is no one thing that will make or break a game.  A game could have great graphics but a terible audio and I might think twice before i play it, but then again it could have great graphics, a great Voice and sound track but if you can't explore the world then whats the use.  It all comes down to what the DEVs put into the game, and hoping that it will keep me coming back for more.

    3 things:

Animations. If the animations suck, I can't think of playing the game for more than few hours. Graphics aren't that important, but animation matters.

Story. If there's no story of epic scale, I'll get bored and lose the point of playing further (to see what's gonna happen).

Combat mechanics. If the game's a WoW-clone, It'll bore the hell out of me in 30 minutes. As for what kind of combat it must beI don't care, only that it has to be unique or new to me.

I voted customer service, because it is obviously up to the developers and customer service teams to foster a good community since the players aren't going to do it themselves.

I picked PvE / Story as this is important to me.

The truth, however, is that a game should be much more than the sum of its parts. All aspects should be implemented in a meaninful way. The priority each of these elements is given is going be driven by your target audience.

Same here, especially when the storyline is actually good; something you don't mind in most MMORPGs. I admit that I have skipped through quest stories before though, especially when I cannot stand the mangled Engrish. But for those games that actually have good storylines, they're like a breath of fresh air, and still people chose to just skip through or skim through them. Understandable if this is the second time they've actually done the quest though. But for first timers doing the quest, they actually would miss out on quite a lot in terms of lore.

Logical realism and obvious freedom in choice in how to as many have mentioned is what I want out of a MMORPG experiance.
