2D MMORPGs are a step backwards for the genre, I'll say that now. Sickening...

I like having less lag and more depth in gameplay

i played legend of mir 3 for like 6 years and legend of mir 2 for like 5 years before that, they are pretty good if you dont mind not having a company that acually runs it....all that GN online and QGO or who ever runs them nowerdays do is take teh servers down once a week for no aparent reason.  another one i quite liked was daek eden, its a vampire mmo where you can play a vampire or a slayer and you for verious builds for each race its very addictive when you get into it.

MapleStory is a 2D side-scrolling game that you may find interesting. There is a large community containing millions of players. This game isn't the best, but it seems to be fun for some people and I recommend that you try it out.

LaTale is another game I have played for a year or so, now. It's a fairly new game (only one year old), but it has its differences between MapleStory. It's a fairly fun game, but, like MapleStory, it may get boring after a while.

Dragonica Online is the latest 2D MMORPG I have played. It is a newer game and I believe it is still in Closed Beta. There are some key give-a-ways on some sites (I think I saw one on MMORPG.com), so you can obtain one and start playing. This is definately a "must-see" game.

This is the "new UO" isn't it?

Ashen Empires.   Has some ex-UO guys involved in its design.   F2P too.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

The original design did.... IE: Dransik

Ashen Empires was sold off. New people took it over and it's nothing like Dransik.

(Dransik was Ashen Empire's name till it was sold)

Didn't know it was F2P now though. That was my first game after UO. I'll have to go check it out. :) I remember downloading that game when it was a whopping 15mb and took forever on 56k to download.

I missed out on UO (I was playing RTS's at the time). Woops.

I heard a lot of the UO guys and gals, talking about how similar they are. They seemed right at home.

The only thing crazier than what a complex game it is, are the bloody animations. I never expected that from a 2d mmo.

The original crew got Ashen Empires/Dransik back from the second company running it.  So you might want to take a look and see if the changes made after event suit you....

I would LOVE to find a modern 2D MMO. I grew up playing 2D RPGs (i.e. Ys series, Lunar series, FF series, etc.)

I have noticed browser games starting to become popular, so you may want to look around for those too.

I found a game that I havent tried yet (seems like the devs gave up on it?), but it looks cool:

    http://www.shadowoflegend.com/

Here are some other games I  have found:

    http://www.edgebee.com/ Sorcery Quest

    http://www.shadowtale.com/

    http://www.aq.com/ AdventureQuest

    http://www.blackmoon-online.com/en/index.php

    http://legendsofzork.com/

I hope others can point out some badass 2D goodness! Would love to find polished low fantasy medieval skill based game.
