To be honest I wouldn't even worry about it, it's actually getting sorta old explaining. I'm sure you can dig up something on the Vet  forums. If you are enjoying it, good for you, if you arn't, welcome to the club. Good luck man.

pre cu is referring to the game before the current game (NGE= new game exprience) and before the CU (Combat upgrade) made to the original game. See the game had 32 classes ( I believe its been awhile) and you could mix and match them, an example would be a swordsmen thats a ranger or a scout thats a pistoleer. Classes had basic starting offs than branched out into elite classes like swordsmen, fencer, rifleman, bounty hunter commando and so forth. The game was well unbalanced most everyone was either a fencer or riflemen with some Bounty hunters running around and everyone had compsite armor on. The game it self was fun yes but to unbalanced so they made the CU which granted wasn't that bad i actually enjoyed it and by this time jedi's weren't huge in number but they were out there in bigger numbers than previously. than for some reason they decided to put in the NGE to this day I don't even understand why they did both if they simply got ride of the stun stat and decreased the max armor compsite had from the 80% resistance to something more like 50 or 60 % the game would be fine, but anyways im rambling and I think i answered your questions in there , the game is still fun in many ways and some people just miss the old days of the game just like any mmo when its launchs people want those early days back.

Finaly there was jedi, but you couldnt just start out as one. You had to earn it. And bounty hunters where always chasing you.

There was no combat levels. Only skills. So you really never knew what you were up against.  And you didnt need 100's of millions to get the gear needed to play with the best.

One of the most notable changes was going from skill based system to a class.

instead of todays 9 fixed class, with a level based progression. In pre-nge SWG your character was not locked and could train skill points from skill trees of 32 professions. You could mix and match as much as you wanted. Every box you learned from one skill tree gave you some abillities. As an example.. you could be master tailor and pistoleer and learn a few artisan boxes just to put up a vendor. And if you did not like some of your skills you could remove them and learn new ones.

That mean that there were no "endgame" and you could be master in something.. while working on something else.

    But that is long gone.

SWG  today is still an amazing game, while not as good as before. But its worth playing and dont listen to us old vets that sometimes gets captured in old hate and memories of the "good old days". The game suffers from a angry  "mob mentality" that has blindly hated the game without compromises since NGE.

Still. What SWG  can give you today is:

    1. Awesome and helpful community.

    2. Unmatched Crafting system

    3. Player cities and player houses. Very interesting. All items in the game, even your travel tickets can be dropped from your character and placed in your house / building. Decorating is almost an sport in the game.

    4. Star Wars feel.

    5. Lots of areas to explore

    6. Good looking game

    7. Due to player cities and so on + a mature playerbase ( a bit due to the game still being more "complicated" and sandboxish than most game, its a very social game.

    8. Player created items .. like clothing. Really cool! And there are fashion shows in player cities.

Enjoy it.. its a good game and hopefully enough people will try it and keep playing it so it can be held alive.

"And you didnt need 100's of millions to get the gear needed to play with the best."

You don't need 100's of millions to get the gear needed to play with the best.

You really only need top gear for pvp...

You can buy a "best weapon" for 2 million credits.

If you're a "dark side Jedi" you don't even need a weapon...

You can buy "best armor" for 4 million credits.

If you were to buy your power bit setup it would cost  22,500,000 for an armor setup

So I'd say what about 30 million

Which in the game today is just as easy/hard to get as the 5-10 million you needed pre-cu

I would like to state that in no way shape or form that anything I receive from SOE influences my opinion about SWG or their company. I’m pretty much a typical average player enjoying the game.

For "everyone" read as "the small PvP clique I ran around with".
