Why don't developers require SSNs to create an account?
The U.S. government offers free verfications. I wonder if other countries have similar programs.
Why don't developers ask players to create 5 answers to personal questions?
Why don't developers use CAPTCHA for log in?

in china and korea people have to enter there Security numbers and crap, but that is due to government and not game security
I dont think most people in the USA (or EU) Would feel safe giving away there SSN and NSN

If any game asked for my SSN I sure as hell wouldn't give it to them, they are already getting my CC #. It only takes one jackass working at the company or a hacker to steal all that shit and either use it or sell it to others. Hell I don't even have my SSN on my drivers license.
Captcha would be a better idea or maybe the 5 questions thing. Didnt FFXI have a thing with a usb drive that had a code in it and you had to have the usb drive hooked up for you to log in? Not everyone had to use it but if you wanted some extra security from your account getting hacked you could buy it.
the day a game makes me enter my SSN is the day i wont play that game.
Out of curiousity, why would you want ANY of these? What's wrong with a username and a password? These things are unlikely to put a dent in gold spam of any sort, so you're only hurting legitimate customers.
None of your ideas will do any good.
SSN and NSN(UK) will get stolen by gold sellers so they can make new accounts...like what happens in china and Korea

Aye, and on top of that the SSN will be sitting in their (likely less-than-secure) database. Instead of losing a CC# that you can cancel, you could lose the one number that makes it super easy to steal your identity.
Follow the Belgian system of electronic ID's. No gold seller will ever steal those.
Either way, there's nothing wrong with the current system, you should never get hacked unless you did something wrong...

Or if the game host sucks, but then it's their fault anyway.
To avoid hacking:
1. Make a good password, alphanumeric, no patterns.
Bad password: password
Good password: Lrt48$jsWx!o0uj
2. Don't share your information, ever.
3. Install a virus-scanner, become familiar with it, make sure it works.
4. Don't download and run random .exe files from "addon" site.
5. Use some common sense.

That is a good password in theory. In practice is a very bad password because you won't rememeber it, so you will write it somewhere. End of security.
that usb thing is a great idea
The thing with US server is they actually allow other country to play their games.
Take Aion for example, US server ban IP from Japan, europe, korea, russia, taiwan, china. But that's pretty much it. Every other country pretty much is allowed to play on the US server.

Maybe YOU can't remember passwords, mine have a minimum of 15 characters, and I can remember most of them.

I've found a good and simple way to come up with passwords. I just type something that forms a pattern in my keyboard. It is true that random characters are hard to remember but the pattern they form is not. After that it is only a matter of remembering where you start "drawing".
Example: A V-shape with half of the characters pressed with the shift-key down = !QAZzse4
Note that even with random characters, the password should be atleast 8 characters long.

SSN's have never been a valid scheme for security. Its only secure if you never give it out, but if you never give it out then its not doing you any good either, is it?

99.9% of the population cant so that is a FAIL as advice.
I thought this thread was going to be about why login servers are down so often. How often do people's game passwords really get guessed? Im pretty sure the problem of people giving out their passwords to friends and guildies is FAR greater.
Until all MMOs start shipping with Dongles I guess that we'll all just have to install virus scanners and pick non-dumbass passwords.

99.9% of the population is retarded then... Remembering passwords is nothing if you use them daily, which is the case for most MMo gamers. Especially if those people can remember the exact location of epic loot, and remember the correct stats of all that epic loot, etc. But they can't remember a password?
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
A better idea is username - password- then an Individual password for every character on that account that can only be typed in with the mouse and a on screen number pad, with changing number positions every time a number is clicked. Now that's a strong secure log in system. Props to Requiem Bloodymare for that.

1. I have upwards of 40 passwords.
2. Its just common sense that most people cant remember "Lrt48$jsWx!o0uj" as a password.
3. And you are tossing around the word "retarded"?

Because they're not legally allowed to. They can be sued if they do. Only people who have something to do with, y'know, your *Social Security* (like your employer) can require your SSN. Yes, you do see people who aren't entitled to your SSN tell you they require it. These people are idiots. There's a whole lot of other reasons why an SSN makes a lousy proof of your identity, but this one will do.
Because personal questions are weak security and very easily broken. They are generally based on matters of public record. They are often ambiguous and unclear, making it difficult for user to replicate his original answer--and if he notes down the question and answer, why not just have him use a strong password, instead?
Which would accomplish what, exactly? If you want to eliminate someone trying to automate trying a large number of passwords, that's done much better by simply implementing a logon delay that increases with the number of bad logon attempts.
Saying most people are retarded is itself retarded. Its like saying most people are well below average. Not mathematically realistic.
What about fingerprint recognition to sign on? or face recognition? Voice recognition maybe? I know, all three and then a secret handshake. J/K OP.
