I was just wondering is it so hard for developers too create unique races for mmos i am really sick of elves, high elves, wood elves...
so many mmos basically reuse the same model and tweak it a little......there is no uniqueness too races any more..
so what do you think why the lack of imagination or is it the fans faults for only like elves etc
ps why dont you mention a unique race you have seen in an upcoming mmo
like popori from TERA online. (a small raccoon like creature)

Familiarity sells. This WOW census page has almost a direct correlation of the the most human-looking races being the most popular, with the monstrous/disfigured races least popular.
A developer could create an insect race, or a spirit-form race, or a quadriped race, but the result would be simultaneously less popular and significantly harder to implement.
I'm not saying unique races could never exist; merely pointing out the reasons they're somewhat inefficient ideas. In the natural selection of game design concepts, inefficient ideas often get killed off before they see the light of day.

I agree that I would like to see something other than your usual huminoid races, but I also understand that if they spend that much time trying to adopt so many diferences in char. profiles they tend to skimp on content or gaphics due to size, as well as the cost to develope said game not mention making it work seemless for the consumer.
Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
It is difficult to get any new idea of the ground in a MMO and races are very central to a MMO’s concept. So the company will be looking for proven ideas, not what they see as flights of fancy.
The caveat here is that if you have an idea that the public is familiar with and the IP rights you are on a winner. So Star Trek Vulcans have not appeared in any MMO yet but will not be a concern for the designers of the upcoming MMO.
You can also borrow on themes that MMo’s themselves are creating, but these are not universal. I remember the Tunerucks(?) from AC2 for example, but how many of you do? I remember the Elves from WoW, LotR, Vanguard etc, here we all can touch base.
So what has worked, is unfortunately the limit to a designers imagination.
GW2 has the asura and the charr which are rather unique. The sylvari are more of a dryad-like race and the norn are basically giants with shapeshifting capabilities.

I personally like Griffins, Bears, Yetis/Sasquatch, Skunks, Squirrels and Centaurs. Any could be anthropomorphic or full animal, more so anthropomorphic though.
Just some of my personal favorites
Some devs use unique races...
VG races www.vanguardmmorpg.com/vanguard_races.php
EQ1 races www.eqcircle.com/races/index.xml
EQ2 races www.tentonhammer.com/node/54309
I loved EQ's Iksar and Regnum's Goat race. Shadowbane had plenty of races also. (A LOT)
