So, im wondering if I should buy EverQuest instead of World of Warcraft. Am I too late? Will i meet newbies like me or everyone is High level? Id appreciate to hear the good and bad features bout this game. Thx
I need answers to my questions before i buy EQ Platinum. 1.- Plz name the noob servers (servers for newbies) 2.-Will I be able to play it without problems?
PC Specs:

I would recomend you play any other mmorpg than EQ because it is about the worst there is. But maybe you are the type of player who will like the pointless grind and their stupid rules.
But to answer your question I do not believe they have "noob" servers. In fact I do not believe they even let you know how many people are on a server any more they just color code it. To find a good starting server you might want to vist an EQ fan page and see which ones are the most active and/or ones where people are starting new toons. Understand that after about 18 months of an mmorpg being out there are not a lot of new players coming into the game. Usually just enough new accounts to offset those who cancel.
As for system specs you are fine. You only need a PII 400 and 256mb of ram. I can't guarantee that you won't have any lag or performance issues but you seem safe. Having DSL ought to prevent net lag. You vid card is good enough but not great. Mostly because it is PCI so you have a much slower rate of data transfer. If the frame rate drops you can turn down some of the effects. Your memory is slow so I would recomend you upgrade it to at least 512 mb since you do not have DDR.
BTW if you ever get a chance to upgrade your system or actually buy a new system I would recomend you get something around 2 gig, 512 mb DDR, and an AGP graphics card. That should allow you to play any game for the next couple of years with no problem so it is a nice mid-low system. It should run you less than $500.
Am I too late? -- Not quite yet. There are still many, many people that still play this, however the game is obviously decreasing in size because of releases of other games, mainly EQ II and WoW, as of now.
Will i meet newbies like me or everyone is High level? -- Of course you'll meet other newbs like yourself. On the other hand, there will also be alot of other higher players. The game is not filled with all high lvl players, there are new members just like you.
Plz name the noob servers (servers for newbies) -- But of course theres a newb server -- Stromm
Will I be able to play it without problems? -- Everquest Platinum has every single expansion of the game, which may take a bit of memory. If your fine with memory, I'd just suggust you might want to buy some more ram, 1g of RAM was plentiful for myself.
All and all, Everquest was and still is a very good game. One of the main attractions that I saw when I first started playing it (when it first came out) was just how many people were starting to play the game. However, this attraction is lowering because of the decrease in subscribers. Either way you go, World Of Warcraft or Everquest, I hope you have yourself a nice time and good luck.
...But the main thing that you have to ask yourself is how much time will you be putting into playing this MMORPG? If its not alot, go with WoW. If your wanting to play alot and put some time toward it, go for Everquest. Goodluck!
Yes EQ is still around. As for low lvl server some say Strom but you can check out all of them since you starting out. I know my surver still has a handfull of new toons on it just hard to find them at times. Like the last poster sayed if you are looking for a fun quick action packed game with out any stress. EQ may not be for you! I love EQ and play it still this game and personaly dont want to play WoW since its way to simple. In EQ you have to dedicate alot of time but if you like that kind of game like me then yes its not to late. Also if and when you hit around 45 you will find guilds to join more frequently!

I think you should try both and make up your mind that way. I bought EQ2 and WoW. I bought EQ2 when it came out expecting eq 1 with much better graphics but, what I got was not what I expected. I couldn't even get into the game, they concentrated too hard on graphics (which aren't really all that impressive - I'm more into gameplay first then graphics). It's laggy for any machine that's not top notch (Altough I read a review where someone bought an alienware unit for 3200 bucks.. OMG I coulda built 2 super phat machines equal to that 1 alienware for the same price). Anyway WoW doens't have a tremendous graphics overhead. It's very nice, it's pretty easy to solo untill around lvl 15ish for non solo classes. For the solo classes though... I'm lvl 41 and it's still smooth. The tradeskill system of WoW is MUCH easier and better in my opinion than eq/eq2. I'm VERY upset at having wasted $50 on EQ2 and VERY satisfied (along with every friend I have who plays WoW now) with WoW.
Scale from 1-10 (5 being avg - which still isn't enough to pay monthly in my opinion)
EQ2 = 4
WoW = 9
EQ1 = 3
Shattered Galaxies = 3 (it's free so can't complain too much)

Well, EQ vs WoW. I don't know. Thats something only you can answer for yourself. But like Mentat suggested, you could try both and make your own decision. Or think about it this way; how much time do you have to play and what are your ingame goals going to be? If you have over 10 hours per week, to play (weekdays) and you want to work for it, to defeat the challenges, go EverQuest. If, however, you don't have 10+ hours per week to play, and you still want to experience the high end game, maybe you should consider WoW. If your interested in group PvP or even player vs player, then maybe you should consider DAoC.
EverQuest is named correctly EverQuest. The point of EQ (if it has a point) is for the player base to have to comit the majority of your online game time, towards completing your goals. Nothing is expected to be fast and easy.
"Stromm" as the newbie server? I suppose your speaking of StormHammer? The $40.00 per month server? Yes, I suppose that would be a very low population server, but newbie? I'd think most of those players are from the high end guilds that moved over to experience the live GM content... I suspect the servers are listed on the server screen as lowest current (current at that moment) low population, on top. The lower on the list the server is, the higher the online population (thats only my quess). Course, knowing SOE, it's prolly just listed in random order.
There are always new players, and there are always old players starting over. Shouldn't be very hard at all to start a new character and find someone to pal around with.

Not sure on WoW specs but you can run EQ will have to have most new char models off. Just means you will be playing with older grapics on some races. I dont even have 1/2 of them on for me to run smother on raids. I run a 900 amd athlon 512 ram and a Nvida FX 5500 258 mb grapic card. I can run all new models but will be slighty lagy. You will have the option before loging on and old models for some classes are better. As far as expantions you will untill 50 probly be focusing on original, Kunark, Luclin *mainly*, poss some Ldon's. At 55 you will be mainly in PoP *exp will fly here* or Luclin you wont need to get OoW or GoD till you are in your 60 actualy closer to 65 range. I also want to but in on. Strom is a new surver they made a wile back. Its a normal choice surver they made it so no one can gear up a alt and no char transfures were alowed. That was oh well over 5 months ago I think so plenty of high lvls thier now but surver still has young toons runing around. Ironic Stormhammer is the pay site that is a $40 dollar surver added onto your normal bill. That site gives you new content first and you can poss get items named after you or you can name them. Not worth it IMO since new content usaly has bugs on normal survers I cant even imagine how that one is.
Originally posted by diegofrgc The most interesting question is, will I be able to play the game without problems? (see my PC specs) Which expansions are worth my time???
Why would you want to play a game that is this old? All the hardcore everquest gamers already have like 5million charactors with all the latest and greatest equipment etc. There is nothing for a newb in this game unless you know someone who is willing to let you into their elite quild and stuff. If you just want to start from scratch ... ugh... highly not recommended. (Go with WoW - it's like eq1 was in the beginning - FUN).
05.01.04 For EQ 1, you need about a 1GHz cpu, at least 512MB system memory (in W98.2) or at least 1GB memory in Wxp. A modern DX9 gpu with 64MB on card memory (128MB beter.) A modern gpu utalizes shader function found in the DX9 api to give a more realistic display in newer games. Shader 2 more preferred. Nice desktop gpu comparison guide As you may note in the guide, those ATI variants after the R9500 were DX9 (especially models R9800pro, X700 and X800, [the X850 may be a bit overpriced for at least six months.]) The nvidia DX9 variants after the FX5200 were models GF6600 and GF6800.
The newer servers were Morden Rasp (13Feb 2004,) Stromm (2May 2003,) and Maelin Starpyre (5March 2003.) Though MR and MS are designated 'prefered' servers they are rather low population. Stromm (different than the legends Stormhammer [feb 2002] premium [pay $30 extra to access,]) was listed as the nooby server and blocked all transfer of high level chars from other servers for it's first year. It remains one of the higher population servers, with alot of mid lvl chars whereas the older servers are full of high lvl chars and tweeked alts. SOE stoped listing the actual server population #s shortly after the DAoC retail, to prevent notice of the declining #s. But allowed listing servers by population (Zek [pker] servers were always the low [50 to 400] population end and Stromm was at the other high population end.) With the retail of Lineage2, WoW and EQ2 about half the EQ subscribers are away trying out those games but likely will be back within two or three months after the free month runs out and they realize those games do not offer what they desired. The high population servers used to be (2002) Karana, Bristlebane, Zebuxoruk, Druzzil, Xegony, Rathe... those servers used to have 3500 to 2000 person peak, now (2005) it is rare there are +2ooo on any of the +40 servers. Many current subscribers worry about SOE consoladating the low population servers to save expenses.
If your buying the EQ plat just install all of it. Think its mainly entering a pass key for each expantion. You may never play the other expantions like LoY or GoD but they did give other things. Like expanded bank slots LoY gives you a new class Frogy you can play, PoP gives you port stones for any class so travel is dumbed down, SoL gives Bazaar feature you can pick some gear up cheep in thier or sell it, and if you get enough cash Lizard or horse mounts. So just install all that comes with EQ Plat some nice bonus stuff in each Expantion even if you not ever going to play in it or wont play in it for a wile.

I think if you pick a strong soloing class (i.e., Necro, Magician, Shaman, Ranger, Druid, etc) you might get more mileage out of it. EQ is a great game in the sunset of its lifespan. Many players are max level and many more have left for newer games (not better, just newer), so finding groups is going to be harder. But part of the answer to that is to solo during those times.
EQ has been muddied up with expansions, but still has a very compelling and mysterious game world and the gameplay has enough challenge to make you value your exploits. I have been considering going back to it, but if I do, it will be without any pretense of being able to group regularly. I'll learn to solo.
-- Yes. No one will flag you for the upper tier planes. If your not at least elemental equipped your worthless. If your elemental equipped your a step above a newb.

The person that made this coment must of been one of the Power gamers that left for WoW or EQ2. Sorry Brostyn dont mean to come out to flame at all but LMAO I am in a guild that is just now working on flaging for Elementals and GoD. The guild im in Strives to see all content EQ has to offer and by doing so we have seen other guilds lower then us trying to do same. There are even guilds that arent even done doing Velious looking toward Luclin, on my surver that will head to PoP after VT. EQ has also made new backflag quests wich are actualy symple. I wouldent doubt by the end of 05 they even open Elementals up to lvl 65+. I even have seen a few newer lvl 30+ guilds shouting recruting in PoK recently. I know for a fact there are still nubies starting up just like the starter of this topic. Granted not many but there are some. Oh and as far as having to be Elemental geared well OoW can also bypass some of that gear to off comon drops in zones.

Last time I loged to EQ (around 2-3 months ago) I waited for 2 hours not finding a group (I have 5-6 chars of level 39-55). Considering my chars werent low level, I hihgly doubt that you can easily find group at lower levels. As someone said, most people are high levels, and i mean realy high with uber items with hundreds of points into AA. I agree with everyone here - your system is fine. To answer the question of WoW vs EQ1 you need to ask yourself:
- how much time are you willing to invest (if its anywhere under 5-8 hours daily, then definitely go with WoW)
- do you like grind? Are you willing to hunt same monster over and over (sometimes days in real life)?( if yes, go with EQ)
- do you hate soloing? (only if you ABSOLUTELY hate soloing then go with EQ becuase although WoW doesnt enforce soloing, you do alot of it cuase its more tangible)
- do you like PvP? (if yes go with WoW)
- do you like tough games (and i mean REALY tough becuase although many people say WoW is easy I find enough hard quests/mobs to keep me challenged. if YES then go with EQ becuase u can spend DAYS and MONTHS of RL trying to find an item, or trying to collet enough cash to buy one or trying to find a unique monster or trying to complete ultra hard quest)
- do you love trade skills? (if yes then definitely go with WoW)
- do you like guns? (this one is a silly question but i Loved guns in WoW so much that I decided to put this as a separate question hehe if yes then go with WoW)
- do you hate cartooney graphics? (although I dont mind them at all, but many pople do, so make sure you watch a few in-game videos (i have some if any1 willing to host them) and screenshots to see what appeals more to your taste) (if no then go with EQ)
- did you play any of the WARCRAFT series and did u like them? (if yes go with WoW, its based on WoW story and world is very Warcraftish)
- do you like complex combat? (if yes go with WoW because in WoW you get a lot of skills to use, often skillfull player achieves a lot more because he/she uses a good strategy. EQ on other hand is just selecting target, turning on attack mode and just watch the swings with occasional press of a button. the good thing about it is you can have a drink or eat something while u fight.
- Do you hate downtime? (if yes then definitely go with WoW. In EQ, when u kill a mob you must regain your mana and/or health for a long time. This mostly apply only to soloing. When you are in group downtime isnt that big but your reward in exp isnt that great either
...thas about all I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps. Feel free to comment or ask questions.
Peace
PS: oh and if you are deciding what EQ expansion to install, install them all. Each expansion comes with some items/quests/mobs/locations that you can have/visit/use only if you install that expansion. You may have to turn down graphics in EQ though but its worht the install.

Originally posted by Nimrod4154 I found that review somewhat biased. You seemed to ask more questions that favored WoW in General.
Feel free to add anything else you think I failed to write about. In my opinion, WoW is better then EQ becuase it fis my style more then EQ - I am mostly a casual soloer. I do like EQ becuase of the level of addiction that it used to have at lower levels, once u get to higher levels you realy have to be a hardcore player to keep up with most people. If you are in a guild, this shows even more since once they start hitting the high level zones (tiers) they wont even group wih you because even though u may have the level, but you dont have items that give u enough benefits to be effective (need to have high level resistance for certain zones, etc). I have several EQ chars, 55 druid is my main, 52 war and several 40+.
In any case, I like both games, but in my opinion, EQ has more faults then WoW. WoW biggest downfall atm are bad connection and a lot of maintainance (sometimes unscheduled) on several servers.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

If you just want to start from scratch ... ugh... highly not recommended. (Go with WoW - it's like eq1 was in the beginning - FUN).

For EQ 1, you need about a 1GHz cpu, at least 512MB system memory (in W98.2) or at least 1GB memory in Wxp. A modern DX9 gpu with 64MB on card memory (128MB beter.) A modern gpu utalizes shader function found in the DX9 api to give a more realistic display in newer games. Shader 2 more preferred.
Nice desktop gpu comparison guide
As you may note in the guide, those ATI variants after the R9500 were DX9 (especially models R9800pro, X700 and X800, [the X850 may be a bit overpriced for at least six months.]) The nvidia DX9 variants after the FX5200 were models GF6600 and GF6800.
Im going to buy EQ Platinum.............do I have to install the expansions separated, or do I have to install everything to play EQ?
This are the Expansions Im willing to play:
Ruins of Kunark
Shadows of Luclin
Planes of Power
(and maybe ill play Scars of Velious)
Am I too late?
-- Yes. No one will flag you for the upper tier planes. If your not at least elemental equipped your worthless. If your elemental equipped your a step above a newb.
Will i meet newbies like me or everyone is High level?
-- No, you won't.

What server is this guild of yours on?
Ayonae Ro. I know 2 guilds are just starting or working on Elemnts. I also know atleast one guild working on trying to get emp to access VT atm.
